About 1860 Bishop Verot, the first bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine, requested the Holy Ghost Fathers to send priests to the Diocese. Because of commitments to and other missions, none could be spared. It was in the 1960’s that Holy Ghost priests of the Irish Province came to serve in this Diocese, many of them in this Cathedral Parish. Since this year the Holy Ghost Fathers celebrate their 300th Anniversary I thought it would be good to share something of our roots. Step one: In 1703 Pentecost fell on May 27th. On that day in northern a seminarian named Claude Poullart des Places made a dedication of himself to the Holy Spirit along with a group of like minded students. They drew up a rule of life for themselves and became known as “The Spiritans” and would become in due course the ‘Congregation of the Holy Spirit;’ more commonly known as the “Holy Ghost Fathers”. Their motivation was to support destitute seminarians and provide priests for service in the French Colonies. Claude was ordained in 1707, and died two years later at the age of 39; and was buried in a pauper’s grave. Step two: In 1802 Libermann was born into a Jewish Family in in N.E. France. Libermann’s ordination was deferred for many years because he was experiencing seizures; then he was miraculously cured at the Holy House of Loreto and was ordained in 1842. He and his companions formed the ‘Society of the Holy Heart of Mary’ and sent their first group of missionaries to West Africa that same year. At the request of the they and the ‘Congregation of the Holy Spirit’ united in 1847 as the Congregation of the Holy Spirit and the . Libermann was the first head of the new ‘Congregation of the Holy Ghost Fathers’. Libermann died in Paris in 1852. Step three: Since then the Holy Ghost Fathers have spread with foundations in other European Countries, the USA, Canada; and in more recent times with foundations in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. Besides priests and brothers there are lay associate members who serve in areas of primary evangelization; they are supported spiritually, financially and in other ways by groups set up in dioceses and parishes through out the developed world. Without this help we could not have continued with our work; this year 2003 we celebrate our 300th Anniversary. Finally: Father Morgan is also stepping out in a missionary endeavor as he and his companions from the Cathedral Parish visit Honduras in Central America to investigate ways you can participate Claude desPlaces in the Church’s mission there. In May, Father Roe celebrated his first anniversary as a priest. Father Roe’s evening Mass on May 18 commemorated one year with his Christ the King family. The Mass began with a beautiful vocal rendition of “How Great Thou Art,” performed by Clementine Hightower- Holt. Following the entrance song, the Damali Dancers approached the altar with great reverence and performed an interpretative dance paying homage to our Savior. During the homily, Father Roe, recalled memories of his vocational quest which started years ago in Wisconsin. It would be years later, that he would return to Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin to take his final steps toward priesthood. During the preparation of the gifts, Clementine Hightower-Holt sang “Amazing Grace.” At Communion, a sweet young lady, Moledia Bennett, Clementine Hightower-Holt singing “How Great Thou Art” sang “I Love the Lord.” Music for LIFE also aided in this special celebration of Father Roe’s first year anniversary. Later in May, friends of Father Roe gathered to continue the celebration. Sam and Jan Clements were gracious in opening their home for this special occasion. A wonderful (and delicious) barbeque was provided and all enjoyed the feast and fellowship. Father Roe, thank you for taking that step in faith. Thank you for all that you have done over the past year. May you be with your Christ the King family for many years to come. Happy Anniversary!

Damali Dancers Diocesan Liturgical Dancers

Damali means beautiful vision in the East African language of Swahili. Swahili is spoken across more of Africa than any other language. It is the language of about 45 million people in East Africa. The Diocesan Liturgical Dancers were formed in 1997, to bring the Word of God, through song and dance to the church, in the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine. After seeing the beauty of liturgical dancing at a Catholic Young Conference, and witnessing the spiritual high that the youth, the adults, priests and bishops experienced through the liturgical expressions performed by the dancers, Ella Simmons director of the office of Black and Indian Ministries wanted Catholics in the Diocese of St. Augustine to share in the spiritual, holy and wonderful way of praises to God. The Diocese of St. Augustine has two Diocesan liturgical Dance Groups. The junior Damali Dancers are based at Crucifixion Catholic Church and the senior dancers are based at St. Pius V. Catholic Church. Damali has performed at local, state, and national events. Father Roe with Helen and Bill Damato For further information, call Ella Simmons at 854-8205. What a fantastic day! The award was established in 2000 at Christ the King School and is named after a Texas journalist whose life was cut short by cancer at the age of 44. GH49 . . .think of everything I do as if I would never be able to do it again. . . In the next 30 years of my life what I would want to do is accomplish as much as I can, live each day as my last and try to make an impact on at least one person to help them in any way. Many people leave their marks through their profession, which requires them to help others. To some people their family inspires them each day to do something that touches the life of another. Even being yourself can make a mark of memories that will stay with you and the person you shared it with forever. Every child has a dream to grow up and become something like a football player or a famous singer; well, my dream is to become a lawyer. I hope that in 30 years I will have my profession and will be able to come in contact with people who might need my help. Whether or not I become a lawyer only God knows. Along my road to wherever it is taking me, other opportunities will open up that could lead me onto a different path, and my dream might not be something I accomplish. In my next 30 years I hope to have a family and make a mark on each one of their lives. By taking care of them and being the best I can be, my family will remember me for everything I have done. I hope to be a person who my family can rely on when they need help or can come to me for support. I hope to be there for them through thick and thin. I hope to pass onto them the great things that my family has passed down to me. Most people's lives are pretty active and each day just comes and goes and no one ever thinks anything of it. In my next 30 years I hope to live each day as if it were my last and think of everything I do as if I would never be able to do it again. Make life fun not only for yourself but for others too. Try and make the people around you feel good about themselves; be courteous to people you don't know. The smallest things make the biggest impact. That's what makes people all around the world have a smile on their face. I hope that in my next 30 years I have left my mark at least on one person, though my profession, my family, or just someone I passed on the street. I don't know that if any of my expectations of how I would want to live my life will come true but this is how I would like to live my life.

Father Roe Fisher officiated at the ceremony as Alma and Stan exchanged their vows. The Mass was especially meaningful since this was only Father’s third wedding since becoming a priest a year ago. The couple has achieved quite a lot in a short time. They have attended RCIA sessions, gone to pre-wedding classes and retreat, plus made arrangements for their wedding! Alma is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Alberto Manosca and Stan’s parents are Mr. Charles E. Brumley and Mrs. Julia Adams. The newlyweds went on a cruise to the Caribbean for their honeymoon. We look forward to seeing them at Mass. Congratulations, Stan and Alma. Marlene, Cheryl, Tom & Jean ~ In January we dined at Kings Head ~ K’Cees News Great Night Out! ~

Celebration was in order when the Courier published its 20th edition in May. It marked five years of supplying news, views and information to the Christ the King community. Celebrate we did on May 16th at the home of Frank and Betty Becht. They graciously opened their home to about 50 of the folks who have worked on the paper over the years. Mind you, many more than that 50 have contributed to the success of the Courier, but were unable to attend. Everybody brought a dish to share and with the pleasant temperatures, we were even able to eat outdoors on the deck. In the end what is the proof of a good party? How many settle in and hang out way past closing time. And we did that—-til way late. It was a wonderful occasion, and a great celebration. The Courier especially thanks Frank and Betty for their gracious hospitality.

August 2003 Christ the King Catholic Church Page 37 One Hundred Scouts Scouts have a reputation for teaching children values and instilling integrity. Below are a few statistics that may be of interest to those who are in scouting and to those who are considering scouting . It was taken from www.Greenbar.ws and other scouting websites author unknown

1. Of any one hundred boys who become Scouts, it must be confessed that thirty will drop out in their first year. Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure, but later in life all of these boys will remember they had been in Scouting and will speak well of the program.

2. Of the one hundred, only rarely will one appear before a juvenile court judge.

3. Twelve of the one hundred will be from families that belong to no church. Through Scouting, these twelve, and many of their families, will be brought into contact with a church and will continue to be active all their lives.

4. Six will become pastors.

5. Each of the one hundred will learn something from Scouting and will develop hobbies that will add interest thoughout the rest of their lives.

6. Approximately one half of the one hundred will serve in the military and, in varying degrees, profit from their Scout training.

7. At least one will use Scout training to save another person’s life. Many may credit it for saving their own.

8. Four out of the one hundred will reach Eagle rank, and at least one will say that he valued his Eagle above his college degree.

9. Many will find their future vocation through Merit Badge work and Scouting contacts.

10. Seventeen of the one hundred boys will become adult leaders and will give leadership to thousands of additional boys.

11. One in four boys in America will become a Scout, but it is interesting to note that, of the leaders of this nation in business, religion, and politics, three out of four of them were Scouts.

12. This story will never end. Like the “Golden Pebble” of service dropped into the human sea, it will continue to radiate in ever-widening circles influencing the characters of men and women through unending time.
