This decline in social interactions can make seniors more susceptible to illness, depression and isolation. Research shows that the number of Australian’s feeling lonely is increasing over time. In any given year one in ten people will experience a period of loneliness. Adults who have a close network of friends, participate in hobbies and leisure pursuits and build and maintain good social connections, are more likely to enjoy longer lives and better quality of life, health and wellbeing. Furthermore, it’s well documented that staying in touch with friends and loved ones or building new relationships can be as effective as exercise at improving your mood and overall quality of life. Benefits of being socially active • Better quality of life • Improved physical health • Higher satisfaction with life • Protective factor against anxiety & depression • Greater independence • Increased mental wellbeing Top tips • Develop & maintain strong relationships with family & friends • Make regular time available for social contact • Become involved in activities that interest you • Join local organisation’s or clubs that appeal to you • Connect with likeminded people that share your interests SOCIAL HEALTH
