In December 2015, 32 cars were stolen and 144 were broken into. Take precautions: avoid putting car keys on top of the front wheel while you swim. Lock it or lose it. Put valuable items out of sight, or better, take them out of the car. Try to park at night in a well lit location. This program was implemented in 1985 to build positive relationships between police and members of the school community. The program is an integral part of policing and reflects a greater emphasis on police partnerships with the community. Currently there are over 950 Adopt-a-Cops performing duties in over 1100 Queensland schools. Adopt-a-Cops are usually parents themselves and enjoy the positive interaction with children. Last year saw the Adopt-a-Cops participate in many activities with their school, including the Walk to School program, traffic management, mentoring at-risk students, participating in assemblies and sports days and being part of the school community.
