1. Executive Summary 1a. Demographic Adwick, Don Valley and Ridgewood are located to the north of . Within the planning area 95% of the children are White British, the other 5% are made up of other nationalities, the largest being Polish. In 2015 the planning area had an IMD of 37.20%, in 2019 data shows that the area has decreased slightly to 35.12%. The planning area is consistently higher than the Doncaster average. Birth rates have varied in the planning area for the last 6 years. Within the planning area 6% of primary and 4% of secondary pupils are EAL, the most common first language other than English locally is Polish. There is currently housing developments planned totalling 801 dwellings across the area, which are projected to be completed at various stages in the next 10 years. 1b. Schools The area consists of a range of learning provision types from both the school/academy and PVI sector offering a mix of flexible provision. There are 27 schools in the planning area, 16 are maintained schools of which two are faith schools and eleven have converted to academy status. There is a program of capital investment in Doncaster. Within this area, 2 schools and 1 PVI have accessed Capital funding and 15 schools have accessed the Safeguarding and Access Fund. Pupil absence in the pyramid is slightly below Doncaster and in line with national averages for primary schools and lower than averages for secondary. School projections show that although there are particular clusters of shortfalls in primary overall across the planning area sufficient places remain available. Secondary data shows significant shortfall across the planning area as a whole from 2019 intake.

1c. Childcare and Early Years Spring 2020 data shows that vacancies remain available in all age groups, however there is a lack of provision for after 6pm and no childcare available on weekends. This could cause difficulty for working parents. Childcare costs for full day care within the planning area is higher than the Doncaster average however lower in all other sectors. All childcare costs are lower than the Yorkshire and Humber average. The take up of 2 year old early education funding borough wide has increased by 6.6% from Autumn 2019 to Autumn 2020. The take up of the 3 and 4 universal provision borough wide has decreased by 4.3% from Autumn 2019 to Autumn 2020. The take up of the 30 hours extended entitlement borough wide has increased by 1.8% from Autumn 2019 to Autumn 2020. There are no identified concerns from families in the planning area highlighting shortfalls in provision. 1d. SEND There is one special school geographically located within the planning area, however this is a boroughwide provision, additionally all learning provision settings have to meet the requirements of the SEN Code of Practice and Disability Discrimination Act requirements.

2. The Pyramid in Context 2a. Overview The data within this report aims to provide an overview of the Adwick, Don Valley and Ridgewood Secondary Planning Areas, the available learning provision within the areas and identify any pressures or shortfalls which will form part of the borough wide Learning Provision Organisation Strategy. 2b. Demographics and Population Doncaster is an ambitious borough and very few places in the UK come close to us in terms of delivering major projects over the last 10 years. These projects are world class and have changed Doncaster considerably, with several more multi-million pound developments already underway and in the pipeline. Other Doncaster landmark developments include:  iPort  Aero Centre, Yorkshire  Project Unity (DN7)  National Rail College  Institute of  PGA European Tour Development at Rossington Hall  Doncaster Corn Exchange Restoration  Bader School  DUTC  Big Picture Learning The Urban Centre Master Plan including; City Gateway, Enterprise Market Place, Waterfront, Minster Canal Side, Civic/Business District, Parklands, Retail Core, Innovation Quarter, Waterfront Phase 2.

2c. Pyramid Profile

Adwick The catchment area for is children from , Skellow, Owston, Carcroft, Woodlands, Hooton Pagnell, Brodsworth, Pickburn, Hampole, Highfields, and Skelbrooke. Adwick le Street is situated a few miles to the north west of the town of Doncaster. It has a population of approximately 10,507. Within this area lies the model village of Woodlands, built for the miners of the neighbouring Brodsworth Colliery. The biggest employers in the area are B&Q Warehouse, Asda Stores and DFS. There are churches, schools, public houses, restaurants, takeaways, numerous shops, a library and a post office. There is a variety of sports and leisure facilities available in several locations including the recently renovated Adwick Leisure Centre. Adwick station has a park and ride facility with ample parking spaces. A further park and ride is Doncaster Park and Ride (North) on the A638 between Woodlands and Scawthorpe, which has spaces for over 400 cars. Brodsworth is a village and civil parish about five miles north-west of Doncaster. In 1905 Brodsworth Colliery opened and became the largest colliery in . Sadly it closed in 1990; Brodsworth has remained as a collection of farms and the estate village. Hooton Pagnell is a small picturesque village in Doncaster; it is on the border with West Yorkshire. Carcroft is a rural village and civil parish roughly six miles north-north west of Doncaster. It borders woodland to the north which separates it from the neighbouring village of Owston. To the west the village merges with Skellow having subsumed the areas previously known as Hobcroft and Bullcroft. A string of small industrial estates connect it with Adwick le Street to the south. East of the village lies mixed farmland and woodland. Other villages within the Adwick pyramid form a diverse range of communities, some being the most affluent in the Borough and some of the most deprived. Don Valley The catchment area for is children from Bentley, Toll Bar, Scawthorpe, York Road, Arksey and Almholme. The pyramid is made up largely of urban Bentley and the more extensive rural and semi-rural neighbourhoods of Arksey, Toll Bar and Almholme.

Bentley is a former mining village which lies north west of the river Don and is linked to Doncaster town centre by the new St. George’s Bridge and the North Bridge. Bentley lies within four miles of a motorway junction, it has its own railway station and in respect has good road and rail links with the wider region. The site of the former Bentley colliery has been transformed into the picturesque Bentley Woodland and the Evergreen Housing development now adjoins this reserve. These are clean environment, energy efficient homes. Scawthorpe is mainly residential but Bentley and Scawthorpe have numerous and varied facilities including, doctors, schools, churches, shops, takeaways, public houses, restaurants, a library and parks. Within the York Road area there are some residential dwellings but there are also two very big retail parks and industrial units.

Ridgewood

The catchment area for Ridgewood Academy is children from Sprotbrough, , Cusworth, Barnburgh, Harlington, Hickleton, High Melton, Cadeby, Adwick upon Dearne and Marr. Parish Sprotbrough and Cusworth Parish is a civil parish and includes the villages of Sprotbrough, Cusworth and Scawsby. Sprotbrough is situated on the A630 and lies three miles to the North West of Doncaster town centre. The village is fringed with open countryside, and is well served by road networks, with easy access to the A1. The settlement is split in two by the motorway bridge that cuts through Sprotbrough, with the distinct old village at one side and the new developments stretching towards Doncaster. Cusworth is an historic small village located between Sprotbrough and Scawsby. The village is mainly residential with very few services, but its character is defined by Cusworth Hall and Park. Cusworth Hall is an 18th-century Grade I listed Georgian country house in Cusworth, set in the landscaped parklands of Cusworth Park. It is now a country house museum but also conducts weddings at the venue. Scawsby is a residential suburb between Scawthorpe and Cusworth and is just over one mile from the town of Doncaster. The village has many facilities, including; schools, shops, takeaway restaurants, Post Office, Parks, Public Houses and a Health Centre. Cadeby is a small rural village with limited access, it is surrounded by open space, but this has been overshadowed from the limestone quarry located close to the village. There are also numerous rural small villages that lie within the Ridgewood pyramid, all with limited resources.

2e. Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) Overview This data shows a comparison between the 2019 IMD and the 2015 IMD. The data shows that the planning area remains above the Doncaster average however, the boroughs IMD has decreased by 2.20% since 2015.

2f. Free School Meals (FSM) The table below show the number of children accessing Free School Meals within the planning area. Data shows that Ridgewood has a lower level of FSM take up than the Doncaster average, however Adwick and Don Valleyis higher.

3b. Academy Conversions There has been a drive in recent years for schools to convert to academy status. Academies are independent, state-funded schools, which receive their funding directly from central government, rather than through the local authority.  In Doncaster 69% of schools have converted to academies.  There were a total of 1504 children/young people living in Doncaster with a special educational need or disability aged 0 to 19 years old registered with Together Information Exchange (TIE), at November 2019. This shows an increase of 104 children/young people since 2018.  From September 2019 to July 2020, the early years inclusion team supported 310 children. September 2020 to October 2020, we are supporting 198 children. Due to COVID, we have extended our support to children accessing FS2 for the Autumn term as part of our transition support. Within FS2 we are supporting 80 children. Support can be, visits, attending APDR meeting or providing EIA funding, or delivering portage home visits.  At March 2020 there were 69 Ofsted registered group childcare providers and 219 childminders on the Local Authority Directory registered to provide the free early years entitlement (2, 3 & 4 year old funding). All have to meet the requirements of the SEN Code of Practice and Disability Discrimination Act requirements.  A specialist provision for pre-school children with SEND is delivered by the Local Authority (Seedlings). The setting is registered with Ofsted and offers sessions for funded 2, 3 & 4 year old children.  As reported at the Spring Schools Census 2020 there were a total of 1,198 children educated within schools (primary & secondary) that accessed support through an Education, Health & Care Plan.  As at Autumn Term 2020 there are six special schools within Doncaster. This is following the opening of Bader Academy. Being part of Nexus MAT Bader Academy is a 100-place school that will serve the whole of the Doncaster borough, dedicated to students aged between 5 and 19 with communication and interaction needs.

Average childcare costs across the planning area indicate:  Childminders costs are lower than the Doncaster average and significantly lower than the Yorkshire & Humber average.  Day nurseries (Full Day-care) costs are higher than the average for Doncaster but lower than the Yorkshire & Humber average.  Sessional care costs for Ridgewood are lower than the Doncaster average however both Adwick and Don Valley are higher. There are no Yorkshire and Humber costs to compare with.  Out of school care is lower than the Doncaster average.  The average costs for holiday play schemes are lower than both the Doncaster and Yorkshire & Humber averages.

6c. 30 Hours Free Childcare for Eligible 3 and 4 Year Olds

Eligibility Criteria Eligibility for working parents includes: employed, self-employed and workers on a zero hour’s contract. To take up the 30 hours of free childcare families need to meet all the following criteria:  Each parent earns less than £100,000 per year  Both parents are working and in a lone parent family the sole parent must work  Each parent works a minimum of 16 hours a week or earns on average a weekly minimum amount that is equivalent to 16 hours a week at either the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage, for example, £120 a week based on National Living Wage

There are exceptions to both parents having to work. Families where one parent does not work (or neither parent works) will not usually be entitled to the 15 hours extended entitlement; however, they will be eligible where:  both parents are employed but one (or both parents) is temporarily away from the workplace on: parental, maternity or paternity leave; adoption leave; or on statutory sick pay  one parent is employed and one parent:  has substantial caring responsibilities based on specific benefits received for caring  is disabled or incapacitated based on receipt of specific benefits
