Bronson Avenue, 2238 Los Angeles, CA 90004 RE: West Board Nomination, 2015 – Why I want to serve Hi Shannon, Thank you for the opportunity to put my name forward for a seat on the West Board of the A.I.C.P.. Over the years, I have attended board meetings, membership meetings and all round table meetings that I can. It is now time for me to take a more meaningful role in the A.I.C.P. organization. I have been in the film production industry for over 29 years and in the commercial industry for over 25 years. The last 10, of which, have been as Executive Producer of Furlined (One of the top Production Companies in our business). In my first four years in the business, I worked under the tutelage of mega producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer over the course of development and premier of two feature films. I have since worked on commercials, short films, episodic television, music videos, concert films, live events, gaming content, etc. My job positions, through the years, have included Craft Service to Script Supervision to 1st Assistant Director, PA to Line Producer to Senior Executive Producer. I have first hand experience, from my time on the line and 10 years at Furlined, with the challenges that face the AICP member companies. I am confident that I can make meaningful contributions to minimizing those challenges through the efforts of the board. My dedication to my job is unceasing as will my commitment to the board. Multiple nominations have been presented on my behalf. Thank you for your consideration. Warm regards, David Thorne Senior Executive Producer Furlined, LLC September 16, 2015 A.I.C.P. Shannon Muñoz-Flores 650 N. Bronson Avenue, 2238 Los Angeles, CA 90004 RE: West Board Nomination, 2015 – Nominee Bio DAVID P. THORNE Originally from Bristol, England, David Thorne grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by celebrity sightings and frequent visits to the local studio tours. As a child, filmmaking was just part of regular after school activities and a fascination with film was a clear passion from a very early age. With a focus on cinematography, and heading to USC Film school, a re-world opportunity presented itself, instead, that could not be overlooked. A professional career in film production began immediately with a role as “Assistant to Don Simpson” at Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Paramount Studios. During four, very formative, years David Thorne worked directly with Simpson and Bruckheimer during the promotion of “Top Gun” and development, production and promotion of “Beverly Hills Cop II” & “Days of Thunder”. The lessons learned under Simpson and Bruckheimer were invaluable and everlasting. Leaving the incredibly valuable experience of the Paramount Pictures studio system, and working in direct proximity to two mega Producers, the skills that were developed were quickly put to use in the Music Video and Commercial Production world. Rising through the ranks, steadily but quickly, during the next 15 freelance years, all aspects of production were explored. Positions included Script Supervisor, Assistant Director, Production Assistant, Coordinator, Production Manager and Line Producer. In 2005, along with the founding of Furlined, LLC, a long time Producer/Director relationship was put on hold as Speck+Gordon set off to direct their first feature Film, “Blades of Glory”. Thus began a 10 year strong relationship with Furlined as Executive Producer and now Senior Executive Producer overseeing two, new E.P.’s and all of Furlined Production. David Thorne lives in Agoura Hills, CA with his wife and two children. .

  • INTRODUCTION Fatal Attraction and Scarface
1 introduction Fatal Attraction and Scarface How We Think about Movies People respond to movies in different ways, and there are many reasons for this. We have all stood in the lobby of a theater and heard conflicting opin- ions from people who have just seen the same film. Some loved it, some were annoyed by it, some found it just OK. Perhaps we’ve thought, “Well, what do they know? Maybe they just didn’t get it.” So we go to the reviewers whose business it is to “get it.” But often they do not agree. One reviewer will love it, the next will tell us to save our money. What thrills one person may bore or even offend another. Disagreements and controversies, however, can reveal a great deal about the assumptions underlying these varying responses. If we explore these assumptions, we can ask questions about how sound they are. Questioning our assumptions and those of others is a good way to start think- ing about movies. We will soon see that there are many productive ways of thinking about movies and many approaches that we can use to analyze them. In Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1992), the actor playing Bruce Lee sits in an American movie theater (figure 1.1) and watches a scene from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) in which Audrey Hepburn’s glamorous character awakens her upstairs neighbor, Mr Yunioshi. Half awake, he jumps up, bangs his head on a low-hanging, “Oriental”-style lamp, and stumbles around his apart- ment crashing into things.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION Movies and the 1980s STEPHEN PRINCE The 1980s significantly transformed the nation’s political culture, as it did the Hollywood industry and its products. Today, the United States is an extremely conservative nation, and the turn toward right-wing policies began in the eighties with the administration of Ronald Reagan. Today, Hollywood filmmaking is beset by out-of-control production costs with no ceiling in sight, and these soaring costs, and the industry’s turn toward the global film market for its blockbusters, have their origins in the 1980s. The decade’s most important developments, however, have given rise to a set of core myths in both domains, even as the realities of film and pol- itics proved to be more complex, more nuanced, and more contradictory than the myths acknowledged. The myths about American film in the period are these: blockbusters took over the industry, leading to a general lowering and coarsening of the quality of filmmaking; the films of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg epitomized this blockbuster style and proved detrimentally influential on a generation of American filmmaking; and Hollywood film mirrored the politics of the Reagan period, shifting to the political right and helping to popularize the Cold War politics of the era. ■■■■■■■■■■ Popular Perceptions Each of these propositions is partially true, but like all myths each also distorts by oversimplifying complex and often contrary realities. Each proposes a monolithic view of Hollywood and American culture in the period when, in fact, a more diverse and heterogeneous set of films and influences was at work. Let’s consider each of these propositions in turn as a way of building an introductory survey of the decade.

Cannes Critics Week panel Films screened during TIFF Cinematheque’s Fifty Years of Discovery: Cannes Critics Week (Jan. 18-22, 2012) In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of Semaine de la Critique (Cannes Critics Week), TIFF Cinematheque invited eight local and international critics and opinion-makers to each select and introduce a film that was discovered at the festival. The diversity of their selections—everything from revered art-house classics to scrappy American indies, cutting-edge cult hits and intriguingly unknown efforts by famous names—testifies to the festival’s remarkable breadth and eclecticism, and its key role in discovering new generations of filmmaking talent. Programmed by Brad Deane, Manager of Film Programmes. Clerks. Dir. Kevin Smith, 1994, U.S. 92 mins. Production Co.: View Askew Productions / Miramax Films. Introduced by George Stroumboulopoulos, host of CBC’s Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, formerly known as The Hour. Stroumboulopoulos on Clerks: “When Kevin Smith made Clerks and it got on the big screen, you felt like our voice was winning.” Living Together (Vive ensemble). Dir. Anna Karina, 1973, France. 92 mins. Production Co.: Raska Productions / Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie (SNC). Introduced by author and former critic for the Chicago Reader, Jonthan Rosenblum. Rosenblum on Living Together: “I saw Living Together when it was first screened at Cannes in 1973, and will never forget the brutality with which this gently first feature was received. One prominent English critic, the late Alexander Walker, asked Anna Karina after the screening whether she realized that her first film was only being shown because she was once married to a famous film director; she sweetly asked in return whether she should have therefore rejected the Critics Week’s invitation.
