MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened. -

Survey: Both Democrats and GOP love 'This Is Us,' 'Game of Thrones' BY JUDY KURTZ - 03/03/20 © Courtesy of HBO The country may be more politically polarized than ever, but there are at least a couple things that both Democrats and Republicans agree on: They dig "This is Us" and "Game of Thrones." The NBC drama and former HBO fantasy series were some of the top picks on both sides of the aisle, according to a recent survey from E-Poll Market Research. Fifty-five percent of Democrats counted "This is Us" as their fave broadcast TV show, along with 68 percent of Republicans. Fifty-two percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Republicans surveyed also listed "Chicago Med" as one of their top TV picks. Other popular choices among Democrats included "Supernatural," Fox's "9-1-1" and "The Rookie," while Republicans said they delighted in "Grey's Anatomy," "Last Man Standing" and Chicago PD." The two parties had more than half of the top 20 TV shows in common, but there were a few notable differences among their boob tube choices. The results show that, of the Americans surveyed, Democrats prefer getting more laughs from their small screen fare, picking seven sitcoms as their favorites, compared to the GOP respondents' three comedy shows. A separate survey of top streaming and cable shows found that Democrats preferred Starz's "Power," with 63 percent of those surveyed naming it as their favored show, and "Game of Thrones," with 51 percent. Additionally, Dante will appear in person at the August 5 screening of Gremlins (1984), August 6 screening of Matinee (1990), and the August 7 free screening of rarely seen The Movie Orgy (1968). Original and unapologetically entertaining, the films of Joe Dante both celebrate and skewer American culture. Dante got his start working for Roger Corman, and an appreciation for unpretentious, low-budget ingenuity runs throughout his films. The series kicks off with the essential box-office sensation Gremlins (1984—Aug 5, 8 & 20), with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy (Galligan) finds out the hard way what happens when you feed a Mogwai after midnight and mini terrors take over his all-American town. Continuing the necessary viewing is the “uninhibited and uproarious monster bash,” (Michael Sragow, New Yorker) Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990—Aug 6 & 20). Dante’s sequel to his commercial hit plays like a spoof of the original, with occasional bursts of horror and celebrity cameos. some old movie reviews – David Herrle Film review of Phone Booth (2003) Directed by Joel Schumaker Starring Collin Farrell, Forest Whitaker, Katie Holmes, Radha Mitchell, Kiefer Sutherland Rated R Length 80 minutes Summary Stu Shepard (Farrell) is a media consultant whose bark is worse than his bite. Basing his business on lies and subterfuge, he even lacks scruples in regard to his marriage. Stu is working on graduating one of his cuter clients, Pam (Holmes) into mistress status. (She doesn't know he's married.) After calling Pam from the usual payphone (so her number is not detected on his cell phone), Stu picks up the phone again when it rings. On the other end is a patient-voiced man who turns out to be the voice of fate. Soon Stu realizes that the voice belongs to an off-kilter sniper who seeks to force confession of deceit and lust out of him and deliver an execution bullet as just punishment. Stu cannot leave the phone booth, tell the crowd or the surrounding police what is really happening to him, and he cannot fast-talk his way out of this fatal deal. Review Stu is cocky, dishonest, glib and brimming with pretense and propped appearances. Barely disguising his Bronx upbringing, Stu seems to have convinced himself that he can convince others that he has everything "together." Farrell fills the role perfectly within the film's first few moments. From the moment Stu enters the phone booth the stage is set: the film takes place only here till the end. This is where he will be prodded and manipulated and taunted by a conscience-like voice.
