OATLEY- RUGBY CLUB Well, we finally did it!! The Oats have finally won a competition. But not Just one. Our club has collected three competitions this year. Firstly the under 9's won out with their end of year carnival and took the shield as the best team in their age group in th~ di5trict. Once again, notable performances were recorded by Ryan Coates who scored 222 points for the year. He scored 51 tries but could manage only 9 goals. David Campese eat your heart out! ! Our under 7's, whilst not as successful 45 the 9's, had an enjoyable season I am led to beleive, even though at times the boys probably thought about taking up water polo with the amount of rain we had. laurie Yeomans and Bruce Battishall have done a great job with the boys and I congratulate them on their dedication to the development of junior rugby. Congratulations to our seniors for competition victories in the Barraclough and Blunt Cups. It was a hard, long, wet, and con1used season but we won out with patience and 4 willingness to get our games on at whatever venues were Available. In this regard, our club wishes to acknowledge Bonnie West, President of the South Hurstville Royals Rugby Club for her and her clubs generosity in allOWing us to use Carss Park for all but two of our home games. This was a significant factor In us winning a premiership, the first since our Radford Cup win in 19B2. The foundation was laid by our continuity, which kept us playing and enjoying our rugby. The finale was the acceptance by our first grade captain Gary Matthews Of the Barraclough Cup on Grand Final Day. This was the capping of a truly great day in Oatley Rugby's history, and one which will be remembered for many a long year. All the hard work and inconveniences of the season had paid off. Special thanks ",ust go t'o all club officials, coaches and managers for the manner in which they carried out their duties. Well done on a 1st class effort. To our supporters who put up with the mud and slush of the year, thanks for hanging in there, and to remember the looks of jay on your faces on Grand Final day, it was worth it. With the5e pre~ier5hips under our belt, let's hope we don't have a mass exodus from our senior ranks. Let's go into the 1990's with the reputation of being winners, not Just also ran5. It is ru",ored that Barry Stumbles is retiring. This 15 false, he will be back next year. One co~petitlon win is not enough ior Barry. he wants more. Recruiting has already commenced with quite a nu",ber of new faces promised for next season. Well done and let's double up in the 1990ás.

laurie McMartin President 19B9 was generally a disappointing year for the mini's, mainly 19B9 CLUB due to our inability to field an Under 8 team. M T G M T G

Once again it was difficult to recruit new players and a big UNDER 7's effort must be made next season to ensure that we can enter teams in the Under 7, 8 and 10 age groups. Chris Wing and Martin Allen again played strongly scoring 96 and 82 points respectively while James Yeomans, Sam Ramulu and Matthew Valoulis proved to be very strong in the forwards.

Chris Norris was the team's great improver in his first season 01 rugby while Matthew Gemmell and Matthew KJoller were excellent team member5 all season.

Congratulations to those boys who represented Southern Districts against Easts-Randwick.

Next year we move to the Under 10 competiton and 15-a-side full-field rugby so we need to make a big effort to recruit new players before the start of the season.

Coach Mick Ference was very keen to show the boys--and Max--his versatility by constantly begging for goal kicking duties. When appointed to this role, he displayed talents similar to those of his weekend golf game--a number of attempted goals revealed the same accuracy as his driver shots off the first tee. In the backline we didn't suffer frOM our usual lack of depth and fielded some good combinations. Paul "Jockey" Gwilliam and Murray Harmes admirably filled the halfback role with Harmsie also shOWing his skills by teaming up with Geoff Agius and Dam in the centres. They were the competition favourites and it was a sudden death game for us. The old man of 3rd Grade, Craig "Fizza" Fear, had a big game and we sneaked into the semis. Our eventual success wa~ largely due to the failure of the Seconds to make the final four. They lost 3 or 4 very close games which would have meant a semi spot--but that's football. Players such as Steve MLine~yH Lines, Paul Fitzmaurice and Terry Ryan who were returning through the ranKs remained in Thirds (unless needed by Max in Firsts). The late arrival of Jim Oio and several judicious selection decisions meant the Thirds entered the semi's with a competitive side. It was this stage of the year that I found the most exhausting and, at times, unpleasant and traumatic. There were times when I wished Seconds had made the semi's and our seAson was over. Selecting sides to play the semi's was very difficult and lots of things had to be considered, I was inundated with advice and suggestions all of a sudden--a lot of which obViously contradicted each other.
