Science – Planetarium Show BIOGRAPHY Jack Wall is an ASCAP award-winning and BAFTA nominated composer best known for his rich, cinematic scores found within popular video game franchises such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II, III, & IV, Mass Effect I & II, the Myst series, Jade Empire and several other franchises winning multiple awards for his work. Wall is currently composing for the supernatural drama television series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments airing on Disney’s Freeform TV. He has also written additional music score for numerous other TV series including the fantasy drama series Reign on the CW and Emerald City on NBC as well as scoring the hi-octane action film Hard Target 2 available on Netflix. Shadowhunters Season 3 premieres in March 2018 on Freeform, On Demand & Hulu. Wall is celebrated among a Hollywood elite of composers invited to score the world’s biggest interactive entertainment property, Call of Duty. For Black Ops II he crafted an adrenaline-fueled, deeply emotional and adventurous musical palette that took the blockbuster series in new sonic directions. Black Ops II received the Best Video Game Score Award at the ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards. Reuniting with Treyarch Studios and Activision for Black Ops III, his follow-up score displays the hallmarks of an epic, sophisticated narrative, combining futuristic hybrid sounds, homages to classic WWII orchestral music and even big band and swing numbers created specifically for the Zombie campaign. Featuring highlight solo performances from contemporary jazz vocalist Antonia Bennett, daughter of legendary singer Tony Bennett, Black Ops III was nominated GameTrailers’ Soundtrack of the Year. Wall created the distinctive musical signature for BioWare’s sci-fi epic Mass Effect, combining ’80s electronica, synthetic instrumentation and futuristic atmospheres. The soundtrack won numerous accolades, while achieving cult status with fans. Wall received British Academy (BAFTA) and Spike TV nominations for his work on Mass Effect 2. Composing for and conducting a full symphony orchestra and master chorale, Wall first garnered attention with his dramatic score for Ubisoft’s Myst III: Exile, receiving universal critical acclaim including several Soundtrack of the Year honors. For the climactic sequel, Myst IV: Revelation, Wall was awarded Music of the Year at the Game Developers Conference.     Press Start Burden of Queer Love The Burden of Queer Love Brianna Dym University of Colorado Boulder Abstract Video games are a unique narrative and interactive experience that allow players to construct their own fantasies through play. The fantastical possibilities a video game could explore are nearly limitless. However, a game’s design often precludes certain imaginative routes, shutting down one fantasy in favour of another. Games close out possibilities through actions as small as character design (gender, race, ability) and restrict imaginative interpretations to serve a narrow audience. Game developers design play that prioritizes hypermasculine narrative experiences, and players that do not align with this identity must condition themselves to play that excludes fantasies or alternate worlds that align with their experiences. This essay explores attempts by game development studio BioWare to create video games that are inclusive of gay, lesbian, and bisexual players by writing queer romantic narrative subplots into their games. While BioWare’s attempts are certainly not malicious, they fail time and time again, game after game, to break free of the hypermasculine and heterocentric culture dominant in the gaming industry. Instead, BioWare appropriates queer experiences and construes them as a burden to the player so as not to displace the fantasies of male, heterosexual gamers. RAY MUZYKA AND DR. GREG ZESCHUK “The Doctors” Also Confirmed to Speak at D.I.C.E. 2011 Calabasas, Calif. – December 17, 2010 – The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) has announced that Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, co-founders of the legendary development studio BioWare™, will be the 14th and 15th inductees into the AIAS Hall of Fame, the first time that this honor has been provided to two individuals. The AIAS Hall of Fame is bestowed on game creators whose efforts and contributions have expanded the scope and success of the interactive entertainment industry. The “Doctors” of Bioware, a division of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS), are respected industry-wide for their emotionally engaging and detailed cinematic games, and are responsible for award winning games and franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™, Neverwinter Nights, Mass Effect™ and Dragon Age™. The Hall of Fame Award will be presented by Mike Capps, President of Epic Games, at the 14th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards at the 2011 D.I.C.E.
