The dean of head coaches at SSU and among baseball coaches in the conference, Goelz has built Sonoma State into one of the most respected programs in the nation.

With a career record of 739-478-5, Goelz is the winningest coach in any sport in SSU history. He is the ninth winningest active Division II coach and is 24th all-time.

The 2007 season was one for the ages for Coach Goelz and his Seawolves. The team tied the school record for wins (50), won their eighth conference title, and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in program history. The ‘07 Seawolves also had a school-record 22-game winning streak and won 35 of their 40 home games. Individually, the Seawolves had four players sign contracts with teams and four earn All-American honors.

After taking over a Sonoma State team in 1986 that had won just 50 games over the previous six seasons combined, Goelz wasted little time turning the school into a winner. Following an eighteen-win season in 1986 (the most wins in school history), Goelz delivered the school’s first winning campaign in 1987 with a 30-20 record. Winning seasons have become common place ever since, with 18 in his last 21 seasons. Career Record Year Overall Pct Conf Since 1999, Sonoma State has a record of 358-198-2, one of the best records in the country at any level. Coach Goelz has also seen over 70 of his players sign professional contracts since 2007 50-12 .806 29-7 his arrival in 1986 and in the past seven years, 28 players have been drafted or signed to play 2006 28-23-1 .548 17-15 professionally. Baseball insiders certainly took notice in 2004 when SSU had four players taken 2005 25-30 .455 19-19 in the first eleven rounds of the Major League Baseball draft. Their draft performance ranked among the top Division I schools in the nation in terms of early round draft picks and they led 2004 39-28 .582 25-15 all Division II teams with four draftees. 2003 46-15-1 .750 27-11 2002 41-24 .631 20-20 In addition to their presence in the professional ranks, Goelz’s former players have continued 2001 50-17 .746 29-7 to make a difference in their communities both on and off the field. Dozens have gone on to coaching jobs at high schools and colleges throughout Northern California and the nation. 2000 39-23 .629 25-15 1999 40-26 .606 21-15 Goelz has seen 13 of his players go on to earn All-American honors and has coached six con- 1998 33-21 .611 23-12 ference player of the year award winners. Freeman 1994 23-25 .479 14-21 is currently the Assistant General of the Florida Marlins. During his time at SFSU, the Gators enjoyed their greatest success, ranking in the national top twenty four times and 1993 33-21 .611 21-14 participating in the NCAA West Regionals on three different occasions. From 1984-85, Goelz 1992 32-17-1 .650 23-7 was the varsity baseball coach at Albany High School. After a third-place finish in 1984, Goelz 1991 29-14-1 .670 21-7 led his team to the Alameda County Athletic League championship, finishing the season with an 18-8 mark and a final East Bay ranking of 12th. 1990 35-17 .673 21-9 1989 28-18 .609 20-9 Goelz resides in Rohnert Park with his sons John (12) and Matthew (10). 1988 28-21 .571 15-13 1987 30-20 .600 18-12 Milestone Victories 1986 18-32 .360 9-21 1 February 11, 1986 vs. The Master’s College Career 739-478-5 .607 455-296 100 April 29, 1989 vs UC Davis 200 May 2, 1992 vs. Cal State Hayward 300 March 20, 1996 vs. Cal Poly Pomona 400 March 19, 1999 vs. San Francisco State 500 May 4, 2001 vs. UC San Diego 600 February 5, 2004 vs. Hawaii Pacific 700 March 3, 2007 vs. UC San Diego Record by Opponent’s Division vs. NCAA Division I 55-51 (.519) vs. NCAA Division II 589-388-5 (.602) vs. NCAA Division III 32-6 (.842) vs. NAIA 63-35 (.643) Associate Head Coach Walt White Walter White enters his 14th season as an assistant on the Seawolf staff. A former player for John Goelz at SSU, White handles many of the on-field responsibilities, with a primary focus on infield play. In addition to his coaching duties, White also oversees the maintenance of Seawolf Diamond’s carefully manicured infield and teaches weight training courses as part of the SSU faculty.

A 1990 graduate of Saugus High, White began his playing career at College of the Canyons where he played from 1991-92. Following his time at the junior college level, White joined the Cossacks and was the starting shortstop in 1993 and 1994. A kinesiology major, he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1994 from SSU.

After his stellar playing career at Sonoma State, White was drafted in the 32nd round of the 1994 draft by the Florida Marlins. He went on to spend five seasons in the Marlins system, where he was named to the Midwest League All-Star team in 1996. After a productive season in Portland (AA) in 1998, the Marlins dealt White to the Diamondbacks. He went on to spend three seasons in the Diamondbacks’ organization at Tucson (AAA). “My professional experience was unbelievable,” says White, “I wish every ball player could have that opportunity. My job is to prepare these men not only for our season, but for the next level as well.”

In 2008, White was inducted in to the SSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Assistant Coach Derek Bell Derek Bell is back for his 11th season as a part of the SSU baseball program, his eighth as an assistant coach. He has been a part of five championship teams at SSU- two as a player and three as a coach. In 2007, Bell was inducted into the SSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Sonoma State’s all-time leader in many offensive categories including hits, doubles, home runs, runs scored, runs batted in, and slugging percentage, Bell capped off a brilliant career by being named CCAA Player of the Year, West Region Player of the Year, and First Team All-American in 2000.

In 2000, Bell went on to represent Sonoma State in a national hitting contest at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Following that season, he signed a professional contract with the . After playing several seasons in the Giants organization, Bell wrapped up his professional career with the Amarillo Dillas of the Central League in 2003.

Assistant Coach Dolf Hes Dolf is back for his fifth year as pitching coach with the Seawolves. Hes played his collegiate baseball at Long Beach State where he pitched in 1978 and 1979. At the conclusion of his playing career, he signed a professional contract with the San Francisco Giants.

From 1983-88, Hes coached at Long Beach State under coaches John Gonzalves and Dave Snow. He was a member of the 1987 Long Beach State College World Series team.

Hes was the head coach at Fullerton High School from 1989-95, where he won championships in four of his seven seasons at the helm. From 1995-2003, he served under Dick Dietz, Kevin Mitchell, and Jeff Leonard with the Sonoma County Crushers of the Western Baseball League. He was an integral part of their 1998 WBL Championship team and he coached former San Francisco Giants reliever Chad Zerbe.

Dolf lives in Rohnert Park with his wife Cathy and sons Justin (16) and Casey (13). Cathy was a student trainer at Long Beach State and currently teaches at Windsor Creek Elementary School. Assistant Coach Brett Kim North Bay native Brett Kim returns for his third year as an assistant coach at SSU. The head coach of the Novato High School baseball team for eight seasons, Kim led his team to a league championship in 2001. That season he was named conference coach of the year for his efforts. Kim is also the coach of the semipro Novato Knicks, a team that has qualified for the Stan Musial World Series in 2002, 2004, and 2005.

A standout at the College of Marin, who also attended Sonoma State, Kim was drafted by the in 1990. He also spent time playing with the Lubbock Crickets of the Texas-Louisiana League. Kim played his high school ball at San Marin High School where he was a First Team All-State pick in 1988.

Assistant Coach Esteban Contreras Following a couple of seasons at CCAA rival San Francisco State, Esteban Contreras joins the Sonoma State coaching staff for the 2008 season. He has also spent time as the head assistant coach at Mon- terey Peninsula Junior College and as head coach of the San Francisco Angels, a collegiate wood bat league team. A graduate of San Francisco State, Contreras is currently working towards his Master’s Degree from San Jose State.

Assistant Coach Mike Nackord Former Sonoma State pitcher Mike Nackord returns to the program as an assistant coach in 2008. Nack- ord pitched for Coach Goelz in 1999 and 2000, compiling a 6-3 record and a 3.66 ERA.

Before getting to Sonoma State, Nackord was an All-Empire pitcher at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa. He also competed for Santa Rosa Junior College. In his first year at SSU, Nackord led the team with a 2.15 ERA in ten appearances, half of them as a starter. As a senior in ‘00, he was second on the team with 12 starts and fourth with 54.1 innings pitched.

Following the 2000 season, Nackord was signed by the Feather River Mudcats.

Volunteer Assistant Coach Gordon Smith Former Major League pitcher Gordon Smith returns for his fifth season as a volunteer assistant at So- noma State. Smith pitched with the Boston Red Sox during the 1962 and 1963 seasons and has been active in coaching at all levels in Northern California.

A star at San Jose State, Smith was signed by the Red Sox in 1960. After several standout minor league seasons with the Albuquerque Dukes (AA) and Seattle Rainiers (AAA), Smith received his first call up in 1962. He got another late season call up the following year before he was traded to the New York Mets organization in 1964. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by an injury during the ‘64 season. Smith’s minor league record was an impressive 67-23.

Following his playing days, Smith has spent time as an assistant coach at Solano Community College, San Jose State, Wilkes College, and the College of Marin. Also during a tour of duty in Vietnam, he was the head coach of the USAF All-Star team that won the Military World Series in 1967. A league championship, 50 wins, four All-Americans, a No. 1 national ranking, four players signed by major league baseball teams, nine All-Conference selections. Yeah, it’s going to be pretty tough to top the 2007 season. But of all those accomplishments, there is one that has eluded the Seawolves over the years....the West Region champion- ship. Three times since 2001 the Seawolves have gone to the NCAA West Region tournament as the No. 1 seed. Three times, they’ve seen their season end in the tourna- ment. The charge in front of the 2008 season is clear. The SSU Baseball team is ready to take that next step. With a talented group of returners as well as an impressive slate of newcomers, only time will tell if this year’s Seawolves will be able to get the job done.

Catchers The Seawolves possess what could be the most talented group of in the nation. Last year’s tandem of Ian Bridges (pictured above, right) and Konrad Thieme returns. Add to the mix Trevor Howell (pictured above, left), who .306 with five homers for SSU in 2006 and you can see that Coach Goelz will have his hands full getting playing time for everyone. All capable catchers and powerful hitters, Bridges may have the most versatility, so expect to see him play some first base this season as well. SSU’s fourth , Vance Otake, would start on many teams.

Infield The slick fielding David Adler (pictured left) leads the way for SSU. The team’s starting second baseman last year, Adler hit .274 with 11 steals last season. Dave Herman, a utility man the last three years, should see plenty of playing time at third base, shortstop, and second. Fresno City College transfer Kris Haycock brings speed and a potent bat to the lineup. He should see the field often at third or short. Robert Walden and Nick Ramos will also look to make contributions. At first base, it’s up to Gino Lavezzo and the overflow of catchers, Bridges, Thieme, Otake, Howell, etc.

Outfield Leading the way in the outfield will be the powerful Tyrese McDaniel (pictured opposite page). Last year’s Newcomer of the Year in the CCAA, McDaniel swings one of the most dangerous bats in the conference. Speedy Nick Nosti plays a solid center field and could bat leadoff. A pair of freshmen will vie for playing time as well in Kyl e Jones and Cameron Cook. Both could be considered SSU’s top offensive freshman since Tom Everidge in 2002. Another Fresno City transfer, Mark Pestorich will play right field while Derek Harms will come in handy as a defensive replacement, pinch runner, and spot starter. Pitchers It will be next to impossible to replace three All-Americans as the Sea- wolves will have to do with the loss of Brent Lysander, Bryan Oland, and Paige Dumont to the pros. To get to the promised land, the Seawolves will have to rely on some familiar arms in Matt Means, Kevin Asselin, and Matt Garnett. Means started in the 2004 CCAA Championship game as a freshman, but has dealt with arm injuries the last three years. Asselin is recovering from his own setbacks after missing all of 2006. Garnett made several starts for the Seawolves in ‘07, but looks forward to seeing more innings in 2008. A pair of hurlers with Central Valley roots will try to lock down spots in the rotation as well. In Rashad Tucker (Fresno State) and Gary Moran (Fresno CC), Coach Goelz should have plenty of options.

The Seawolves will try to replace perhaps the best closer in the nation in Paige Dumont. The heir to the throne is Travis Babin (pictured right), who won a couple of games in relief for SSU last year. Nick O’Brien and Tyler Fockler could also get save opportunities while John Bonifacini, Kenny Cook, Morgan Rodriguez, Troy Brown, Paul Oules, and Max Smoot should all eat up middle relief innings.

The CCAA Considering the losses of key players from last year’s league cham- pion team, CCAA coaches were conservative in their pre-season ranking of the Seawolves. Picked to finish third, the Seawolves were ranked behind UC San Diego and Chico State in the pre-season poll. UCSD returns just about everyone and will be a definite threat to SSU’s plans for a repeat. Chico State is always tough and has to be considered a CCAA and West Region championship contender every year. Cal State L.A., last year’s West Region champ, endured many losses, though they would like to make it back to the conference tournament. Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State San Bernardino also expect to be in the mix.

Over the years, the Seawolves have earned respect throughout the west and across the nation. Possessing one of the best coaching staffs in the nation, if any team is going to overcome the loss of so many great players, it’s Sonoma State. SSU has won eight league championships since 1990 (four since joining the CCAA in 1999), but that one championship, the west region title, continues to elude them. Will 2008 be the year? Only time will tell.
