Musical / action thriller / romantic comedy Ammore e Malavita won Best Picture plus 4 more Awards. Ciro (Giampaolo Morelli) is among the most feared men in Naples, one of two killers at the service of crime boss Don Vincenzo (Carlo Buccirosso), “the King of Fish.” One night a young nurse, Fatima (Serena Rossi), finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and sees too much; Ciro is given the job of getting rid of her. But when the two end up face to face, they recognize each other as childhood sweethearts. Winner of 2018 Donatello Awards: Best Picture Best Supporting Actress - Claudia Gerini Best Score Best Original Song Best Costume Design Showtime Saturday, April 21 - 6:30 pm Jean Cocteau Cinema A Ciambra revisits characters from Jonas Carpignano's Mediterranea. At its center is Pio Amato, a 14-year-old boy living on the poor side of a Calabrian town (“A Ciambra”), where frictions between Italians, gypsies and African immigrants run high, and petty crime is a way of life. Carpignano elicits terrific performances from the predominantly nonprofessional cast, aided by Tim Curtin’s fluid cinematography. Winner of 2018 Donatello Awards: Best Director - Jonas Carpignano Best Editing - Alfonso Gonclaves Showtime Sunday, April 22 - 6 pm Violet Crown Cinema Set almost entirely aboard a retro-futuristic ship in the harbor of Naples, Gatta Cenerentola re-imagines Cinderella as a 17-year-old, vaguely emo-punk chick who's about to be married off to a megalomaniac drug dealer who wants to turn Naples into the crime capital of the world. Of course, there's an evil stepmother who's raising her own children as — what else? — cabaret dancers, and also a heroic policeman who might be able to give this crazy, music-filled and intentionally somewhat chaotic ride a happy ending. Winner of 2018 Donatello Awards: Best Producer - Luciano Stella & Maria Carolina Terzi Best Digital Effects Showtime Saturday, April 21 - 4:30 pm Jean Cocteau Cinema Tutto Quello Che Vuoi is a heartwarming dramedy about two unlikely friends. Alessandro (Andrea Carpenzano) is a tempestuous young slacker and a source of endless frustration to his father. Giorgio (Giuliano Montaldo) is a former poet in the early stages of Alzheimer syndrome. The two live within a stone’s throw of one another, but their paths have never crossed until Alessandro is forced to accompany … the old man on his afternoon walks. Winner of 2018 Donatello Awards: Best Supporting Actor - Giuliano Montaldo Youth David Showtime Saturday, April 21 - 12:30 pm Jean Cocteau Cinema "We're lucky to have a Creative Director who has such an eye and ear for Italian cinema," says Executive Director, Lisa Contarino. "We're all very proud and excited about Luca's selections." Il Ragazzo Invisibile, Seconda Generazione (The Invisible Boy, Second Generation) and The Place, additional curated films selected by Creative Director Luca Ceccarelli and the Official Selections from CineFesta Italia's first-ever international competition round out its 2018 schedule. Filmmakers from the documentary feature, Camminando sull'Acqua (Walking on Water) and the short, fiSOlofia (PhiSOlophy) are traveling from Italy and will offer Q&As following the screening of their films. The competition's Official Selections are FREE to the public and admission to the curated selection of films is $12 or full festival passes are available for $125, which includes admission to all films and events. The festivities begin on Friday, April 20 and continue throughout the weekend with films and other wonderful events, such as CineFesta Italia's ever-popular Opening Reception and seminar / tasting event, The Liquid Art of the Aperitivo. Events also include a Saturday morning Film Industry Panel discussion of two important questions: QUESTION 1: With the emergence of so many media platforms, how do emerging filmmakers identify a target format? QUESTION 2: How are the #social movements sweeping across America today going to affect the stories that filmmakers want to tell and audiences want to see?
