Gazette notification regarding gem and jewellery

license fees to be tabled in Parliament today

Feb 10, Colombo: The Cabinet Consultative Committee on Industrial Affairs at its meeting held in Parliament yesterday (09) granted approval to submit the gazette notification regarding the fees related to the process including mining and sale of gems in accordance with the Gem and Jewellery Act for the approval of the Parliament.

The Extraordinary Gazette Notification dated March 2, 2020, prepared under the National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act No. 50 of 1993, has been considered at the meeting yesterday and is due to be presented to Parliament today (10).

The Committee met in Parliament Tuesday. Minister of Industries and State Ministers Lohan Ratwatte and presided over the Committee Meeting

The Committee focused on the exemption of income from the export of gems and jewellery from the 14% income tax. It was mentioned at this meeting that an earlier discussion with the President had also focused on this matter.

The annual reports of several institutions including the Cement Corporation, the Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board and the Ceylon Industrial Development Board were also approved for submission to Parliament.

MP Shantha Bandara focused on the importance of uplifting the traditional industrialists who provide high quality Watapath in the Dambadeniya area.

Minister Wimal Weerawansa stated that he will visit the area in the future to look into the matter.

MP Chinthaka Mayadunne also drew Minister Weerawansa’s attention to the problems faced by the pottery industry in the Puttalam District and the Minister said solutions will be provided soon.

A group of officials including the Secretary to the Ministry were present at this occasion.
