The first European to visit the region was a Spanish explorer named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. It is historically home to the Kumeyaay people who’s heritage in the area dates back 12,000 years. In 1769, Spanish missionaries established Mission San Diego de Alcalà. San Diego did not begin to grow significantly until California was annexed by the United States in 1846. Following rapid growth during the late 19th century, San Diego became a major US Naval Base in the early 20th century. Due to the presence of the Navy, San Diego suffered less than most of the USA during the depression of the 1930s. The city and surrounding region grew throughout the 20th century and continues to thrive today with its main industries being defense and tourism.

Over the course of our trip, we will have dinner aboard the Emerald Hornblower as we cruise the San Diego Harbor, go on a guided tour of Coronado Island and San Diego on the Old Town Trolley and take a ferry to the Midway Museum. There is also , which features attractions such as the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion (one of the largest pipe organs in the world), the , the Balboa Park and Lily Pond, and the San Diego Natural History Museum.
