Attendance was taken, issues were discussed, and some were put to a vote by members. The results of one such act approved by the USG will cut directly into the funds that support clubs, the money collected from the student activities fee. The new USG act now makes it possible for politically-oriented clubs to be alotted funds-where previously those were the only clubs that could not be funded. What we are most disappointed with the USG is that a referendum wasn't held. Such an extreme change in policy involving the students' money should have been put to a vote by the students, and not a select few. By working around a referendum, the USG-many of whose members are also members of some of the political clubs in question-has made its motives highly suspect, regardless of its actual intentions to fund the clubs. United Student Government is its name, but its latest actions have shown it to be a government of special interests. We can only hope the USG reverses its decision to fund the clubs, and puts the measure up for a referendum. Welcome Aboard! Screenwriter Charles Fuller describes his A Soldier's Story as an American story. The whole point of the film based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning play is that black people are Americans and are not to be treated as if they live in a separate society. This film deals with an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the murder of Seigeant Waters (Adolph Ceasar), a black leader of an all-black army company based in Fort Neal, Louisiana. It takes place in 1944, nearing the end of World War 0, and the black soldiers are anxious to help defeat Hitler and Tojo. Meanwhile, the company is on their way to a baseball championship and a shot at the Yankees in an exhibition game. Sgt. Waters is your typical company leader: arrogant, efficient, and loud. His favorite verbal punching bag is Private C.J. Memphis (Larry Riley), a simple hick who plays guitar and baseball with amazing ability. According to Waters, the dumb, eager-to-please farm types were setting back the whole black race. "People like you just make us seem like fools," Waters said. "And we can't let nobody go on believin' we all like you." Waters' remarks to C.J. and others probably led to his being beaten and then shot to death on an empty road at approximately 10 pm. He had been drinking heavily, and the liquor enabled him to be more candid than usual with anyone who crossed his path that night. Enter Captain Davenport (Howard E. Rollins, Jr.), a lawyer from Washington, D.C. who has been assigned to investigate the murder. The Captain had to ride in the back of the bus going to Fort Neal because he is black. He is greeted with double-takes first, and then salutes. Howard E. Silver is less suc- cessful than Kurys at pinpointing why two girls out of millions find friendship in each other, which makes Old Enough minor and unfocused. Silver tries to portray class differences as well as adoles- cent rites of passage (make-ups, boys, jealous clinging to one another) into one big ball, and it just fails. However, Kurys and Silver do see the com- mon bond in these friendships.
