Serving Itasca "The Big Little Town" since 1997 Itasca High School Vol. 2006 Issue No. 51 December 22, 2006 Merry Christmas Itasca

On behalf of the staff and the board of trustees, I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful and joyous Christmas. May your holiday be filled with joy and peace; and may each of us pray fervently each day for peace in our world and for a fast and safe return of our soldiers to their families and loved ones. Merry Christmas.

Itasca ISD Superintendent Dr. E. Ray Freeman

As we celebrate Christmas and the Holiday season this year, it is important for us to remember the many blessings we have as citizens of this wonderful community. Being a part of this community makes it incumbent upon each of us to remember those among us who are less fortunate and give back by volunteering our time and energies. The City Administration, all of the City Employees, members of the City Council, and the Mayor would like to wish you and yours the most blessed Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Itasca Mayor Matt Fehnel Christmases Past in Itasca

What is it that "makes" Christmas for you? Being with family? A special dinner? The Christmas lights? The Christmas cantata or other special church services? Surely one thing that is precious to everyone is memories of Christmases past.

Having grown up in Itasca and living here since 1955, I have lots of memories of Christmas in Itasca. I loved the beautiful downtown decorations that we had in the 1960s. Garland with lights stretched from poles across the streets and were decorated with red bells which lit up. McPhersons Hardware always had a solid white nativity scene lit in their display window. My dad would get someone to paint a Christmas scene on the glass window of the old Post Office (where the Rotary room is now). One of our favorites was Mr. Zip Code (remember him?) dressed as Santa and taking the mail down a chimney. A high school girl drew it. And, speaking of, the old high school usually had a Christmas scene painted on its front doors and windows. The one I remember best was a nativity scene. I don’t guess that’s a sight we would see today, thanks to separation of state and school!

At Schmelings Drug Store, we could buy Hallmark Christmas ornaments and beautiful cards. Often we would go to Fort Worth to try to find that special gift for our mother, only to wind up back in Itasca at Hampton’s where we found exactly what we had wanted all along! It was always fun for my sister and me to go in Alverson’s Variety Store and look around, especially at Christmas time. One year, there was a beautiful tabletop nativity scene. It was larger than most of the ones you see these days, and it even played Silent Night. But it cost $19! My mother just couldn’t decide if she wanted to spend that much money or not! Fortunately, she did purchase the nativity scene, and she still displays it every year.

No trip to downtown Itasca was complete without a trip to Bobby Adam’s drug store. There you could get the best cherry coke in the world! One year when I was very small, Bobby had a drawing for some Christmas gifts. I still remember the phone call at supper time, saying that I had won a little set of play dishes. My mother was as excited as I was and bundled me up and rushed down there to claim my prize! I, on the other hand, just wanted to ride on the mechanical horse at the front of his store.

As a small child, I lived in the house where I live now. Next door, where the Central Baptist parsonage is now, was the old Central Baptist Church. They had a life size, wooden nativity scene, and I spent many hours standing in front of Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus, having conversations with them!

And that leads me to the best memory of Christmas - the memory of a Child born over 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem. It is in remembering Him that I find the greatest joy at Christmas. And I still have conversations with Him often!

Itasca has changed over the years, but it is still a wonderful place to live. It is still a beautiful, loving place, especially at Christmas. One thing never changes, though, and that is the love of God. May the knowledge of that truth fill your heart with joy this Christmas and always.

Have a blessed Christmas! Diane Barnes
