Brilliant follow-up to Day of ChaosBy O.R.Judge Dredd has some of the most epic, long form storytelling in comics--probably THE most epic long form storytelling. Day of Chaos (having built over 30 years from the classics Block Mania and Apocalypse War, through Doomsday for Dredd and Doomsday for Mega City One, and really being the culmination of storylines that have cast a shadow over or have touched on countless Dredd stories over the last 30+ years) was amazing, dark, and intense, and completely changed Mega City One, the Dredd comics, and the Dredd character going forward. Day of Chaos the Fourth Faction and Endgame tell the story of the day of chaos (the Sov's revenge for Dredd actions in Apocalypse War)--well worth reading for new fans or longtime fans--while Fallout contains several stories detailing the immediate aftermath. Fallout features several very talented artists, colorists and writers, including John Wagner (the co-creator of Dredd and author of many of the best, most epic Dredd stories). I enjoyed every story in this volume and loved most of the art (and found all of it at least very good). This volume contains a lot of action and one of the best action sequences I've read in Dredd (a story about an assassin trying to kill either Chief Judge Hershey or a Sov ambassador and then being chased by Dredd and a Sov judge. Good story with great art and fantastic action choreography. There are a lot of great action sequences in Dredd over the years, but for some reason this short sequence stood out as I read it).Maybe two years ago I had barely read any Dredd and what I had read (the very early stuff from the late 70's, before the longer form story telling started, before Dredd and Mega City One had really developed and started to evolve in real time) didn't really impress me, but a couple years ago I picked up Block Mania and The Apocalypse War in a nice hardcover re-release and I've been hooked since. I've read all the big Dredd stories since and now have more Dredd in my collection than any characters except maybe Kirkman's Invincible and Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo (actually, I probably have more Dredd than either of those two, but there's a lot more Dredd available). All three Day of Chaos volumes are recommended for both new and long time readers, and for new readers who want to get into Dredd do a search for best Dredd stories; the Dredd character and his world age and change in real time, and it really makes the series feel epic (plus a lot of the stories are just plain good). That said, there are a lot of terrible Dredd stories over the years, and I often don't enjoy large parts of the complete case files collections both in terms of story and art. My recommendation with Dredd is to look up the big stories and get those specific collections. The newer stuff is more consistently better from what I've seen, and the big stories are great, but there's a lot of terrible stuff done over the years as well that doesn't add to the epic Dredd storytelling.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Short storiesBy T. Cue.This was very well done--just a collection of dystopian/noirish short stories set in the Dredd universe. It wasn't necessary to've read any of the other "Day of Chaos" issues to appreciate the work here. This was the way the franchise should go, like real beat- cop life: series of vaguely interconnected responses to recursive systemic expression against the Big Meg backdrop. I hope they do more like it instead of trying to create "space dimension judge" plots that totally spoil the mood.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. BrutalBy Reviewer from TerraThe second part of the Day of Chaos is brutal even for a Dredd epic. My one complaint is that the addition of Dead Judges, wasn't really necessary. There was enough violence without them. I'd also like to see PJ Maybe get put to bed permanently. He's worn out his welcome. Other than that, this is one brutal story. RISING FROM THE ASHES!After ‘Chaos Day’, Mega-City One is a mere shadow of its former self. The population has fallen from 400 million to 50 million and the infrastructure is devastated. Inundated with the problems that come with a large scale disaster, a hugely depleted Justice Department are barely able to maintain control. Legendary lawman Judge Dredd is on the frontline, trying to maintain order. But will the guilt he feels for what has happened, finally lead to his demise? This hard-hitting anthology dealing with the aftermath of Mega-City One’s darkest day includes stories from Judge Dredd co-creator John Wagner, Alan Grant (Batman), Rob Williams (The Royals) and Michael Carroll (Jennifer Blood), with stunning art from PJ Holden (Numbercruncher), Laurence Campbell (The Punisher) and Trevor Hairsine (Captain America) amongst others.THIS VOLUME INCLUDES THE STORIES: DEBRIS (2000AD progs 1792-1796)INNOCENT (2000AD progs 1798-1799)PAYBACK (2000AD progs 1801- 1802)SEALED (2000AD prog 1816)THE PITS (JUDGE DREDD Megazine 332)SAVE HIM (2000AD prog 1819)WOLVES (2000AD progs 1820-1822)CYPHER (2000AD progs 1824-1825)THE FORSAKEN (2000AD progs 1830-1835)SKULLS (2000AD prog 1836)POWER STRUGGLE (JUDGE DREDD Megazine 336)WASTELANDS (2000AD progs 1837-1841)BENDER (2000AD progs 1845-1849) About the AuthorJohn Wagner has been scripting for 2000 AD for more years than he cares to remember.
