  • Field Hockey DIVISION I
Field Hockey DIVISION I Highlights Maryland rallies past North Carolina in OT, captures its eighth national championship: Maryland (19-4) came back from a two-goal defi cit with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to top North Carolina, 3-2, in overtime for its eighth national title. Freshman Katie Gerzabek scored the fi rst Terrapin goal in the 67th minute, senior Jemma Buckley ripped in the equalizer with no time on the clock in regulation, and sophomore Jill Witmer netted the game-winner in the 81st minute for the Terps’ fi fth NCAA crown in seven years (2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011). Since the NCAA began seeding the top four teams in the tournament in 2002, the Terps are the fi rst unseeded team to win a title. They beat the top three teams (Syracuse, Old Dominion, North Carolina) in order, en route to their repeat crown. “Can’t say enough what an amazing team North Carolina (23-2) is and they have been all year,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “They were so far above us in the fi rst half and at halftime, we just spoke about competing and playing with intangibles. We couldn’t be more proud of the Maryland team.” The Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Kelsey Kolojejchick found Elizabeth Stephens by the post for the defl ection. They would take that one-goal lead into the break. North Carolina added its second goal with 7:57 left in the game when Kolojejchick brought it up and again found Stephens around the cage for the tip-in.

  • Field Hockey DIVISION I
Field Hockey DIVISION I 2012 Highlights Princeton defeats North Carolina to capture first national title in program history: For the first time in program history, Princeton won the NCAA Division I championship in a comeback 3-2 victory against North Carolina November 18. Princeton topped the six-time national champions to take the battle between the top two teams in the nation. Princeton won the game off a penalty stroke in the 60th minute from Amanda Bird. The opening minutes of the match were quick paced, as both sides looked to possess the ball, but it was North Carolina that took the initial advantage. The Tar Heels earned consecutive penalty corners in the third and fourth minutes, but Princeton managed to deflect their shot attempts. Before the Tigers were able to fire off a shot of their own, North Carolina was awarded another series of corners. On North Carolina’s fourth corner of the match, Charlotte Craddock sent in the opening goal at 11:26. Down 1-0, Princeton had an offensive surge and moved the ball into the Tar Heel circle. On a drive outside the cage, Kathleen Sharkey was fouled and the Tigers set up their first penalty corner of the game. Julia Reinprecht fed the ball to Katie Reinprecht and Sharkey was there to slam in the tying goal at 17:01. With the score tied at one, the second half opened similarly to the first as both sides exchanged possession, but were unable to convert on penalty corners. The Tigers saw one of their best chances to take the lead in the 44th minute off a Kelsey Byrne drive down the right flank.

The Huskies entered Trager Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky an unblemished 22-0. They left with that perfect record intact, defeating Maryland 2-1 for their third national championship in the past five years. Charlotte Veitner, the division’s top goal scorer, added her 33rd and 34th goals of the season as they were all that UConn needed to hold off the Terrapins. Maryland ends its season 16-7. The Terrapins had no easy road to the finals, upsetting both No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Michigan along the way.
