The animals are noisier than usual as the sun sets. Suddenly, you hear angry growls and squawking. You run outside. But you’re too late. A monster has attacked your chickens, leaving behind bloodless bodies. The beast runs to the cornfield. Its red eyes stare at you from the stalks. Then it disappears.

4 5 An Evil Beast The story you just read is an example of a chupacabra story. For many years, people have been telling such stories. In them, chupacabras are evil creatures. People don’t always agree on what the monsters look like, though. Some say they look like sick dogs. Others say they move on two legs with spiky backs. All say the monsters suck out their preys’ blood, though. No one has been able to prove either type exists. But brave investigators keep searching. They want to know if the blood-sucking monsters are real.

6 Chupacabra means “goat sucker” in Spanish. r 2 hapte C RESEARCHERS People work hard to find chupacabras. Some are paranormal investigators. Others are animal experts. They research sightings and reported attacks. They study clues, such as footprints. They examine any bodies left behind. Investigators also listen to what witnesses have to say.

The first chupacabra sightings happened in Puerto Rico.
