The star lot is the 16th-century masterpiece of the Italian High Renaissance, Christ Carrying the Cross (estimate: $2,500,000-3,500,000) by Girolamo Romanino; see separate press release. With nearly 100 works by great French, Italian, Flemish, Dutch and British masters of the 15th through the 19th centuries, the sale includes works by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Hubert Robert, Jan Breughel I, and his brother Pieter Brueghel II, among others. The auction is expected to achieve in excess of $10 million. 1 The sale is highlighted by several important paintings long hidden away in private collections, such as an oil-on-panel sketch for The Adoration of the Magi (pictured right; estimate: $500,000 - $1,000,000), by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, Westphalia 1577- 1640 Antwerp). Visual Arts Art 1 One Year Grades 9-12 No prerequisite This course is a combined studio art, artist influence, and art history class for the beginning high school student, with the general aim of improving student skills, building individual abilities, instilling art appreciation, and encouraging creative forms of expression. Studio art activities include drawing, painting, linear perspective and art form exploration. At the freshmen or sophomore levels, this course is intended to help prepare students for success in DP Visual Arts. Multimedia Arts One Year Grades 9-12 No prerequisite This course requires technical skills to integrate two or more forms of media. Students are provided an introduction to the creation of original digital works in the disciplines of logo design, digital illustration, infographic design, web design, animation, stop motion animation, and video editing using software applications such as Adobe CC, and iMovie, as well as HTML coding, CSS coding, and various other computer software applications and processes. Because of software licensing capacity requirements, this course is limited to 20 students. Digital Video & Film Studies One Year Grades 9-12 No prerequisite This course provides discrete development in the execution of original digital works in the discipline of digital video creation, editing, compositing and special effects using an iPhone, or a digital video camera, and software applications such as iMovie and Adobe Premiere, along with various other computer software applications. Students will become conversant with various cinematographic and video editing vocabulary and techniques. Because of software licensing capacity requirements, this course is limited to 20 students. Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Painting
FIRST COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF RENOIR’S FULL-LENGTH CANVASES BRINGS TOGETHER ICONIC WORKS FROM EUROPE AND THE U.S. FOR AN EXCLUSIVE NEW YORK CITY EXHIBITION RENOIR, IMPRESSIONISM, AND FULL-LENGTH PAINTING February 7 through May 13, 2012 This winter and spring The Frick Collection presents an exhibition of nine iconic Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, offering the first comprehensive study of the artist’s engagement with the full-length format. Its use was associated with the official Paris Salon from the mid-1870s to mid- 1880s, the decade that saw the emergence of a fully fledged Impressionist aesthetic. The project was inspired by Renoir’s La Promenade of 1875–76, the most significant Impressionist work in the Frick’s permanent collection. Intended for public display, the vertical grand-scale canvases in the exhibition are among the artist’s most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of Impressionism. The show and accompanying catalogue draw on contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir’s full-length figure paintings as well as their reception by critics, peers, and the public. Recently-undertaken technical studies of the canvases will also shed new light on the artist’s working methods. SPRING 2012 Volume 19, No. 1 Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art Newsletter LES GRANDES VERTICALES: RENOIR AT THE FRICK COLLECTION By Caterina Y. Pierre This spring, visitors to the Frick Collection have the opportu- nity to view a small but splendid exhibition entitled “Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Painting,” organized by Colin B. Bailey, the Frick’s Deputy Director and the Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. The exhibition, which runs through May 13, 2012, is accompanied by a sumptuous catalogue authored by Bailey and co-published by the Frick and Yale University Press (ISBN 978-0-300-18108-1, US $60.00). The exhibition takes an in-depth look at nine of Renoir’s large- scale, mostly vertical, canvases created over the nine-year pe- riod between 1874 and 1883. The catalogue includes a tenth painting, Jeanne Samary, a full-length portrait that was un- available for the exhibition. The inspiration for the exhibition seems to have stemmed from a recent reevaluation of the Frick’s own vertical for- mat canvas by Renoir, La Promenade (1875-76), acquired by Henry Clay Frick for $35,000 in 1914 from Knoedler and Company. Recent infrared reflectography studies completed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art have revealed two addi- tional figures at the top left of La Promenade, suggesting that the principle large female figure in the center of the painting, usually referred to as the “mother” figure, might now be seen as an older sister to the two foreground children. Similar re- search, particularly of the technological kind, was offered for many of the paintings on view through the catalogue and a small media room outside of the exhibition. -

Boston Museum of Fine Arts trip set for Wednesday June 20 We have had a tremendous response to our first excursion trip last September. Requests for another trip have encouraged us to plan another--this time to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. “Dance at Bougival” by Pierre Auguste Renoir! This lively painting with springtime colors—the young girl in chapeau rouge and the bearded man in chapeau jaune--make you feel like dancing. Joining this iconic Renoir, are two monumental paintings on loan from the Musée d'Orsay, Paris—full length canvasses of Renoir's “Dance in the City” and “Dance in the Country.” The artist’s colorful Impressionist style captures the fashion and pastimes of his contemporaries. This trio of paintings in Gallery 225 will be together for the first time in a generation and just in time for our arrival. The showpiece of the MFA is its brand new Art of the Americas Wing. The architecture alone is worth a visit. It doubles the number of objects from the collection on view, including several large-scale masterpieces not displayed for decades. The new wing takes a global perspective on Art of the Americas, showcasing more than 5,000 works of art produced in North, Central, and South America over the course of three millennia. The wing's four levels has 53 brand-new galleries including nine beautiful period rooms and four Behind the Scenes galleries to enhance the way visitors experience and interact with the collection. The Seward Johnson Atelier Sculpture exhibition MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Are there real clothes on the sculptures? No. Surprisingly each sculpture is entirely bronze. The realism of the textures and details is the hallmark of Johnson’s art, and this detailing is achieved with hours and hours of intense labor. Seward Johnson begins each bronze with a twelve inch tall “sketch” in clay, and then enlarges this to life scale in clay. Often delicate textures, such as the skin, can be made more real with fabrics pressed into the still-moist clay at this stage. Sometimes articles of clothing are stiffened with a resin and used in the mold process, but there is no clothing on top of, or under the bronze, in the sculpture that you see today. Other times clay clothing is sculpted onto the figure by the artist using fine-edged wooden and metal tools. As the figures are sawed into many parts for the casting process, there are dozens of roughly welded areas when the parts are reassembled in bronze. At this stage, the artist must replace many of the fine textures; a corduroy, a tweed, a cable knit sweater pattern, with an electric tool that is much like a fine dentist’s drill. This is the most time consuming part of creating these bronzes. It takes up to one year to create a new sculpture. Who does the artist used as models?
