Photo by Sarah Harrison Cover: 14th century Ayton Castle. Photo by Jeremy Clarke Editorial ooking back over our last five years we like to think that we have not only brought pleasure to our readers through the articles and features that have appeared, but that we have also been able to give Lencouragement to a number of new writers. We hope that this will continue and see more writers with their work in print. To some of the hundreds of amateur photographers who get out and about with a camera at the weekends, capturing the beauty and the splendour of Yorkshire, we are looking for some striking photos of Yorkshire in all its moods to suit our front cover and for the journal itself; we leave this thought with the camera enthusiasts. We have not had the opportunity until now to thank those readers of The Yorkshire Journal who kindly sent us messages of encouragement and told us that the Yorkshire Journal is one of those publications which is read and re-read, kept on the computer, copied and sent to relatives, friends and neighbours but never deleted! We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have helped our writers during their research work in order to substantiate their articles.

  • CHINESE FREEMASONRY. a N Ancient Masonic Tradition Connects
CHINESE FREEMASONRY. 0 BT BBO. KENNETH K. H. MACKENZIE , IX . I know how birds can fly, how fishes can swim, and how beasts can run. And the runner may be snared, the swimmer may be hooked, and the flyer may be shot by the arrow. But there is the dragon. I cannot tell how he mounts on the wind through the clouds and rises to heaven. To-day I have seen Lau-tsze, ancl can only compare him to the dragon.—KUNG-JU-TSZE (CONFUCIUS). A N ancient Masonic tradition connects the foundation of the Order of -t-L Prussian Knights with Peleg, the architect of the Tower of Babel, and hence with the confusion of tongues. An equally ancient tradition ascribes to Noah, otherwise named Foil or Euh, the foundation of the oldest existing empire in the world—that of China. With the history as transmitted of Peleg most average Masonic students are familiar. Dumb and confounded he journeyed far to the West, and by leading the life of a contrite and humble personage, ultimately reconciled himself to T.G.A.O.T.U., recovered his speech, died, and was buried or burnt. His resting-place was discovered fifteen cubits from the surface of the earth, and on a .white marble stone, in 533, it is said that an inscription existed, saying : " Here repose the ashes of the Grand Architect of the Tower of Babel. The Lord had pity on him because he be- came humble." It is quite unnecessary to pursue the history of the Order of Prussian Knights further at the present time.
