So far, 168 species of herbal plants belong to 58 genera, 24 families have been reported to contain xanthones. Among them, Calophyllum, Cratoxylum, Cudrania, Garcinia, Gentiana, Hypericum and Swertia genera are plant resources with great development prospect. This paper summarizes the plant resources, bioactivity and the structure-activity relationships (SARs) of xanthones from references published over the last few decades, which may be useful for new drug research and development on xanthones. Keywords: herbal medicines; xanthones; plant sources; pharmacology; gambogic acid; structure-activity relationships 1. Illnesses for which these plants are used are those perceived in western style medicine to be caused by bacterial, fungal or viral pathogens. Methanol extracts of the species were screened for activity against a variety of bacteria, fungi and viruses, under various light conditions to test for photosensitizers. Thirty-seven extracts showed activity against bacteria and thirty-five showed activity against fungi. Only eight were active against Gram-negative bacteria.

THAI FOREST BULL., BOT. 46(2): 162–216. 2018. DOI https://doi.org/10.20531/tfb.2018.46.2.08 Systematics of the Thai Calophyllaceae and Hypericaceae with comments on the Kielmeyeroidae (Clusiaceae) CAROLINE BYRNE1, JOHN ADRIAN NAICKER PARNELL1,2,* & KONGKANDA CHAYAMARIT3 ABSTRACT The Calophyllaceae and Hypericaceae are revised for Thailand and their relationships to the Clusiaceae and Guttiferae are briefly discussed. Thirty-two species are definitively recognised in six genera, namely: Calophyllum L., Kayea Wall., Mammea L. and Mesua L. in the Calophyllaceae and Cratoxylum Blume. and Hypericum L. in the Hypericaceae. A further four species of Calophyllum are tentatively noted as likely to occur in Thailand. Descriptions, full synonyms relevant to the Thai taxa, distribution maps, ecology, phenology, vernacular names, specimens examined and provisional keys are given. All species previously classified in the genus Mesua have been moved to the genus Kayea, except Mesua ferrea L. Two taxa were found to be endemic to Thailand: Mammea harmandii (Pierre) Kosterm. and Hypericum siamense N.Robson. The distribution for the families in Thailand was found to vary with the Thai Calophyllaceae being found mainly in Central and Peninsular Thailand whilst the Thai Hypericaceae were found mainly in the North and the North-East of Thailand. Overall the numbers of collections housed in herbaria are few and more collections are necessary in order to give a comprehensive account of their distributions in Thailand. KEYWORDS: Guttiferae, Flora of Thailand. Published online: 24 December 2018 INTRODUCTION from herbarium notes or directly from dried material. Ecological information was taken from specimens, The present work forms the basis of an account from field observations and from the literature.

School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China 2. Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research, Tianjin 300193, China Abstract: Xanthone and its derivatives occupy a large part of the family of natural polyphenolic compounds with various biological and pharmacological activities. In recent years (from 2006 to 2011), it was reported that 127 xanthones were discovered from plants and fungi using various modern separation methods including silica gel/polyamide column chromatography, HPLC, high-speed counter-current chromatography, high-performance centrifugal partition chromatography, etc. Since total synthesis and structure modification for xanthone and its derivatives have been given attention worldwide, we introduced the synthetic methods of xanthone skeletons as well. Unfortunately, to date, there are still weaknesses in current methods of separation and synthesis, which need to be improved. This review, to a certain extent, provides necessary foundation for the further research and development of medicines containing xanthone and its derivatives. • Antiherpetic Activity of Some Endemic Hypericum Species in Turkey
African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 11(5), pp. 1240-1244, 16 January, 2012 Available online at http://www.academicjournals.org/AJB DOI: 10.5897/AJB11.3139 ISSN 1684–5315 © 2012 Academic Journals Full Length Research Paper Antiherpetic activity of some endemic Hypericum species in Turkey Rüstem Duman Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Selçuk University, 42075, Konya, Turkey. E-mail: [email protected]. Accepted 25 November, 2011 This study was designed to investigate the antiherpetic activities of the crude methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of three species of Hypericum growing in Turkey ( Hypericum neurocalycinum Boiss. & Heldr., Hypericum salsugineum Robson & Hub.-Mor. and Hypericum kotschyanum Boiss.). For this purpose, firstly, the cytotoxicity potential of the extracts against Vero cells were assessed using MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol–2-yl) - 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] colorimetric assay. The 50% cytotoxic dose (CD 50 ) corresponded to the concentration required to kill 50% of the Vero cells for each extract was calculated by nonlinear regression analysis using GraphPad Prism software. Additionally, the maximum non-cytotoxic concentrations (MNCCs) were determined as the maximal concentration of the extracts that did not exert a toxic effect. Later, the values of the maximum non-toxic concentration obtained (50.00, 100.00 and 25.00 µg/ml for the methanolic extracts of H. neurocalycinum , H. salsugineum and H. kotschyanum , respectively) were used in antiherpetic activity determination of the extracts using MTT assay. Nevertheless, it was determined that none of the extracts have antiherpetic activity in tested maximum non-toxic concentrations. Key words: Hypericum species, antiherpetic activity, colorimetric MTT assay.
