Disher, Jr. A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF Master of Arts Thesis Director's Signature: Houston, Texas May, 1968 Abstract An Analysis of Richard Flatter’s German Translation of Romeo and Juliet by Sidney E. Disher, Jr. Since its publication in the early nineteenth cen¬ tury, the Schlegel-Tieck translation of Shakespeare has gradually attained the status of a literary master-piece. Even today, it continues to dominate both on the stage and among the reading public as the "definitive" German Shake¬ speare translation. Despite its artistic merits, however, scholars and critics have become increasingly aware that the Schlegel- Tieck version contains serious deficiencies in literal and stylistic fidelity to the original. Numerous efforts to "correct" and "emend" the translation, however, proved largely unsuccessful, resulting, in most cases, in a mere bowdlerization of Schlegel's work. In light of the find¬ ings of contemporary research on Shakespeare and his art, and the weaknesses of the original and emended editions of the Schlegel-Tieck version, the case for a completely new translation has become ever stronger. Of the numerous recent attempts to meet this challenge, Richard Flatter's work is one of the most outstanding. A noted Shakespeare scholar in his own right, Flatter has pro¬ duced a translation which features dynamic, modern speech, and close attention to theatrical detail. In Flatter's view, Shakespeare was first of all a mar. of the theater, an able producer and director who used his great poetic talent to complement his theatrical aims. -

Appraisal of Professor Markku KULMALA of the University of Helsinki for His Award Doctor Et Professor Honoris Causa from the Eötvös Loránd University
Appraisal of Professor Markku KULMALA of the University of Helsinki for his award Doctor et professor honoris causa from the Eötvös Loránd University Professor Markku Tapio Kulmala was born in 1958 in Finland. He graduated in 1983 and obtained his Ph.D. in 1988 both from the University of Helsinki. He has been the head of the Division of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Physics of the University of Helsinki since 2001. In his nearest research environment, professor Kulmala leads a research group in Aerosol and Environmental Physics consisting of 60 people. He also leads the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Meteorology of Atmospheric Composition and Climate Change, which consists of 150 scientists. He was visiting professor at the University of Vienna and University of Lund, the King Carl XVI Gustaf’s visiting professor at the University of Stockholm. He is member of the editorial boards of several prestigious scientific journals. Professor Kulmala is a world leader in atmospheric aerosol science and one of the founders of terrestrial ecosystem meteorology. His major research interests cover the theory and mechanism of the new aerosol particle formation and growth processes in the atmosphere, their experimental studies, and the interactions among aerosol, clouds, climate and biosphere. Professor Kulmala has created a research program including continuous long-term atmospheric observations, global modelling and deep theoretical and experimental understanding of atmospheric cluster and aerosol dynamics. During his investigations, he has proposed that atmospheric clusters are crucial for new particle formation, and that they exist in the real atmosphere. He has shown that atmospheric nucleation takes place practically all around the world. -

The standpoint of Polish scholars affiliated with the Polish League Against Defamation on the activities of Jan Grabowski We, the undersigned Polish scholars, working in Poland and abroad, strongly oppose Jan Grabowski’s dissemination of a false and wrongful image of Poland and Polish people during World War II in placing the blame for the Holocaust upon the Polish Nation. It is worth pointing out differences in the situations within other occupied countries, such as France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway and Hungary, and that of Poland. Here, the scale of terror spread by the Nazi-German occupiers was incomparably greater. Despite this, there were no institutions representing Polish society and the Polish Nation which supported the occupier’s policy. This was unlike the case in many other occupied European countries, many of which had their collaborating governments and formations, including military forces (e.g. the SS "Wiking", "Nordland", "Galizien", "Nederland", "Wallonien", "Charlemagne", “La División Azul” divisions). Furthermore, the Polish nation actively opposed Nazi-German-orchestrated genocide by taking measures in institutional, legal and organisational forms established in the underground with the sole purpose of saving Jews (The Żegota Council to Aid Jews). We are aware that in time of war not everyone acts like a hero, and many deem it expedient to save their own lives and the lives of their nearest and dearest, or to make a profit, and in so doing, some will commit vile actions for their own benefit. -

Exposure to English in Iceland
Ráðstefnurit Netlu – Menntakvika 2011 Menntavísindasvið Háskóla Íslands Ritrýnd grein birt 31. desember 2011 Birna Arnbjörnsdóttir Exposure to English in Iceland A Quantitative and Qualitative Study Very little research is available on the amount and type of English the average adult in Iceland encounters in his or her daily life. In this article, results of two studies of the amount and nature of English exposure in Iceland will be presented. The first study is a telephone survey of over 750 informants who live throughout Iceland who were asked about their exposure and use of English. This is a repre- sentative sample of the population. The other is a qualitative study designed to give a clearer view of the type of English encountered and used by individuals. Fourteen Icelandic men and women of different ages in different professions were asked to keep a diary over their use English during the course of an average day. The results provide a good picture of Icelanders’ exposure to and use of English and show a high and consistent presence of English in Iceland. However, as ex- pected, the exposure is mostly receptive. These studies provide empirical evidence which supports previous notions presented by the author and others that English exposure is to a large extent passive which encourages English perceptive lan- guage skills over productive skills. The author is professor of Second Language Studies in the Faculty of Foreign Lan- guage, Literature and Linguistics, School of Humanities, University of Iceland. Oriented at a mid-term re-embedding of Western production and consumption norms into planetary limits, it suggests the development of “eco-social” policies in the rich countries. In this theoretical context, this article empirically investigates the relationships between attitudes towards welfare and climate policy in 23 countries. Using 2016 data from the European Social Survey, we explored patterns of synergy between both kinds of policies as well as effects of crowding-out, where support for one kind of policy involves refusing the other. Since previous research addressed the role of welfare states and their institutional foundations in establishing environmentally sustainable societies, we studied how attitudes towards welfare and climate policies differ according to welfare regime affiliation. Additionally, we examined how a range of socio-demographic and political factors such as class, education, income, and political position shape people’s views on welfare and climate policy goals. The results of a multiple correspondence analysis indicate that the simultaneous support of welfare and climate policies follows welfare regime lines in that this support is the highest among social-democratic countries.
