A Brief Life Sketch of Shaykh Ibn Arabi Al-Shaykh Al-Akbar
A Brief Life Sketch of Shaykh Ibn Arabi al-Shaykh al-Akbar Qaddas Allah Sirrahu It is well known that when our lord, master and beloved, the Prophet of Allah, Muhammad al-Mustafa saw went on a missionary tour to the city of Taif, he was rejected by its citizens. They pelted him with stones to the point where it was difficult for him to take his shoes off because of the encrusted blood on them. At one point, when the Prophet saw was sitting sad and dejected, the angel Gibril as appeared to him and informed him that if he wished, God would order the angels to topple the two mountains besides Taif onto the city to punish its citizens, most of whom belonged to the Tay tribe. As only the Mercy to the Worlds saw could answer, he had requested that the people of Taif be spared perchance they, or their descendents, might become believers. Through the baraka of the Beloved of Allah’s saw prayer, nearly six centuries after him, one of the greatest saints of Islam was born to a pious Arab family of the Tay tribe that was originally from Taif, but had settled in far away Murcia in al-Andalus, Spain. The name of the child was Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Arabi al-Tayi qs , who later came to be known as al-Shaykh al- Akbar Muhyi al-Din Ibn Arabi qs . al-Shaykh al-Akbar qs was born to a religious and influential family on Monday, the 17 th Ramadan 560 AH/28 th July 1165 CE . -

MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series
MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. WHITESIDE, JAMES ROBERT, MFA Saudade
WHITESIDE, JAMES ROBERT, M.F.A. Saudade. (2014) Directed by Professor David R. Roderick. 49 pp. The title of this thesis comes from the Portuguese term, “saudade.” Saudade is more than our English idea of melancholy—it can be thought of as “the love that remains” in an absence. For the purposes of the project, the poems in Saudade explore the relationship between memory, music, and perspective in relationships taking place in a contemporary urban pastoral. Specifically, the poems address relationships—usually romantic—between men. As a gay man, I feel it is especially important to write from my own experiences as a member of such a community. The work in conversation with contemporary poets such as Frank Bidart, Richard Siken, Craig Arnold, and Kathleen Graber, reaching back even to C.P. Cavafy. The poems’ speakers are faced with one of life’s most confounding desires—to know for certain the thoughts and feelings of the beloved. How is shared meaning communicated by two people who are socialized not to speak about their emotions? The poems search for perspective, a safe place where they might access the individual experience or viewpoint of the other. The tension between intense feeling and a lack of ability to communicate with the object of that feeling is central to the poems in Saudade. Some of the work (exemplified by the poem “Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major”) has begun to transcend the “you-I” binary in order to explore the possibilities of the speaker sharing elements of the internal life with a general audience. -

Can Islam Accommodate Homosexual Acts? Qur’Anic Revisionism and the Case of Scott Kugle Mobeen Vaid
ajiss34-3-final_ajiss 8/16/2017 1:01 PM Page 45 Can Islam Accommodate Homosexual Acts? Qur’anic Revisionism and the Case of Scott Kugle Mobeen Vaid Abstract Reformist authors in the West, most notably Scott Kugle, have called Islam’s prohibition of liwāṭ (sodomy) and other same-sex be - havior into question. Kugle’s “Sexuality, Diversity, and Ethics in the Agenda of Progressive Muslims” ( Progressive Muslims : 2003) and Homosexuality in Islam (2010) serve as the scholarly center for those who advocate sanctioning same-sex acts. Kugle traces the heritage of the Lot narrative’s exegesis to al-Tabari (d. 310/923), which, he contends, later exegetes came to regard as theologically axiomatic and thus beyond question. This study argues that Kugle’s critical methodological inconsistencies, misreading and misrepre - sentation of al-Tabari’s and other traditional works, as well as the anachronistic transposition of modern categories onto the classical sources, completely undermine his argument. Introduction Islam, like other major world religions (with the very recent exception of certain liberal denominations in the West), categorically prohibits all forms of same- sex erotic behavior. 1 Scholars have differed over questions of how particular homosexual acts should be technically categorized and/or punished, but they Mobeen Vaid (M.A. Islamic studies, Hartford Seminary) is a Muslim public intellectual and writer. The Prevalence and Nature of Unrequited Love

Bringle1,2, Terri Winnick2,3 and Robert J. Rydell4 Abstract Unrequited love (UL) is unreciprocated love that causes yearning for more complete love. Five types of UL are delineated and conceptualized on a continuum from lower to greater levels of interdependence: crush on someone unavailable, crush on someone nearby, pursuing a love object, longing for a past lover, and an unequal love relationship. Study 1a found all types of UL relationships to be less emotionally intense than equal love and 4 times more frequent than equal love during a 2-year period. Study 1b found little evidence for limerent qualities of UL. Study 2 found all types of UL to be less intense than equal love on passion, sacrifice, dependency, commitment, and practical love, but more intense than equal love on turmoil. These results suggest that UL is not a good simulation of true romantic love, but an inferior approximation of that ideal. Keywords unrequited love, interdependence, love, friendship Although virtually all aspire to consummate romantic love, Baumeister et al., 1993). Interdependence encompasses the path toward achieving the ideal love relationship is lit- influence, behavioral control, and the frequency, diversity, tered with relationships that are incomplete approximations. and length of interaction (Berscheid, Snyder, & Omoto, Many of these are discarded, whereas some relationships are 2004). The main invasion followed a year later; Tariq Ibn Ziyad, a Berber by birth, brought over from the African side of the narrows a comparatively small army which sufficed to overthrow Roderick the Visigoth and to supplant the Cross by the Crescent; he gave his name to that famous Rock of Gibraltar (Jabal Tariq, the Mountain of Tariq), which has been disputed by so many conquerors down the ages, and over which the British flag has fluttered since the early years of the eighteenth century. -
Lovesickness” in Late Chos Ǒn Literature
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reinterpreting “Lovesickness” in Late Chos ǒn Literature A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures by Janet Yoon-sun Lee 2014 © Copyright by Janet Yoon-sun Lee 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reinterpreting “Lovesickness” in Late Chos ǒn Literature By Janet Yoon-sun Lee Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Peter H. Lee, Chair My dissertation concerns the development of the literary motif of “lovesickness” (sangsa py ǒng ) in late Chos ǒn narratives. More specifically, it examines the correlation between the expression of feelings and the corporeal symptoms of lovesickness as represented in Chos ǒn romance narratives and medical texts, respectively, of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As the convergence of literary and medical discourse, lovesickness serves as a site to define both the psychological and physical experiences of love, implying the correlation between mind and body in the non-Western tradition. The analysis itself is re-categorized into the discussions of the feeling and the body. In the discussion of the feeling, it will be argued that the feeling of longing not only occupies an important position in literature, but also is gendered and structured in lyrics and narratives of the seventeenth century. In addressing the rubric of feelings of “longing,” this part seeks the ii theoretical grounds of how the intense experience of longing is converted to language of love and to bodily symptoms to constitute the knowledge of lovesickness. The second part concerns the representation of lovesick characters in Korean romance, particularly concerning the body politics of the Chos ŏn society. -
Chaucer's Parlement of Foules As a Valentine Fable
ChaucerÕs Parlement of Foules as a Valentine Fable The Subversive Poetics of Feminine Desire Jean E. Jost In Parentheses: Papers in Medieval Studies 1999 53 haucer’s initiation of St. Valentine’s Day as a celebration for love-birds of all species began a remarkable tradition of wide social and cultural impact still blooming today in florists’ and Hallmark shops around the world. Smitten medieval Courts eagerly implemented Chaucer’s literary suggestions, instituting programs to further the already well-known practice and policy of courtly love. By the time of his death, these practices were becoming institutionalized not only in England but in France and elsewhere as well. As Derek S. Brewer points out, A whole elaborate institution, the Cour Amoreuse was founded in the French Court in honour of women; its chief aim was the presentation of love poems to ladies in a kind of competition, with a prize for the best poem. The Cour Amoreuse first met in Paris on St. Valentine’s Day 1400. In theory there were over six hundred members… mostly great lords of the realm… under the King’s patronage. It was ruled by a “Prince of Love”, who was a professional poet…. On St. Valentine’s Day 1400, after mass, the chief ministers… met in “joyous recreation and conversation about love.” Love-poems were presented before ladies, who judged them, and awarded a golden crown and chaplet for the best poem.1 54 Subversive Poetics This and other institutions in France and England—the rival orders of the Flower and the Leaf, for example—testify to the abiding interest in fine amour in poetry and courtly society. -
