Day 1 Tuesday 8th July

Sunny periods, warm The flight was on time into Lourdes, where the group was welcomed by Mark and Jason, our locally based guides. We quickly loaded up the mini-buses and set off towards the nearby mountains, stopping to purchase sandwiches and fruit for our lunch, before continuing into the narrowing gorge of the fast flowing Gave de Gavarnie stream, which tumbles all the way down from the Spanish border. Soon after passing the famous Pont Napoleon Bridge, just upstream of the spa town of Luz St Saveur, we reached our destination, where our amiable hosts Odile and Philippe promptly allocated us to our rooms. En route, we saw many Black Kites overhead and also our first pair of the impressive Griffon Vultures.

Re-assembling with two members who had already travelled by road to the hotel, we then took the narrow road up on to the Plateau de Saugue, where we ate our lunch on a road verge, already surrounded by colourful blooms and numerous butterflies. , Clouded Apollo, Black-veined White, Purple-shot & , Large, Chalk-hill, Mazarine, Little, Adonis & Turquoise Blues, Dark Green, Heath, Spotted and Knapweed Fritillaries, were just some of the highlights. Among the many Spreading & Nettle-leaved Bellflower-Campanula patula & C. trachelium, Pyrenean Germander-Teucrium pyrenaicum, St Bernard’s Lily-Anthericum liliago, Dwarf Toadflax- Linaria supina and Fragrant & Pyramidal Orchids-Gymnadenia conopsea & Anacamptis pyramidalis, were admired with Tree Pipit, Serin, Black Redstart and Green Woodpecker providing avian interest. After this wonderful start, we reluctantly returned to the hotel to unpack our cases, before enjoying the first of many delicious dinners that we were to have during the forthcoming week.

Day 2 Wednesday 9th July

Sunny periods, showers, cool Our first full day in the field dawned cool but fine, but with the increasing threat of showers, as we headed up the nearby Heas Valley, before turning right on to the road which leads up to the Lac des Gloriettes. This is a man-made lake formed by an impressive barrage (dam), which holds back the Gave d’Estaube to form a substantial stretch of water, with lovely views up the valley towards the Cirque itself high up on the Spanish border to the south. We started by inspecting the rocky area either side of the road which at this time of the year is a riot of colour from the numerous plants that grow here. Scottish Asphodel-Tofieldia calyculata, Alpine Toadflax-Linaria alpina, Arnica-Arnica montana, the alpine roses-Rosa glauca, R. pendulina, & R. villosa, Field Gentian-Gentianella campestris, Aconite-leaved Buttercup-Ranunculus aconitifolius, were just some of them, while Orchid lovers could enjoy Fragrant, Greater -Platanthera chlorantha, Heath & Common Spotted- Dactylorhiza maculata & D. fuchsii, Broad-leaved Marsh-D. majalis, the rare Small White-Pseudorchis albida and the diminutive finely scented Vanilla Orchid-Gymnadenia austriaca. Overhead the raptors were now starting to search for food, with numerous Griffon Vultures soaring over our heads, along with at least three magnificent Lammergeiers, a Short-toed Eagle and both Alpine & Red-billed Chough.

After eating our picnic lunch in the vicinity of the parking area, we then set off across the barrier and skirted a short distance around the reservoir. It was warming up somewhat now, although the blustery wind certainly made it hard to search out butterflies. We did though find Apollo, Black-veined White, Marbled White, Pearl- bordered Fritillary, Brown Argus, Common, Turquoise, Silver-studded and Little Blue, , Red- underwing, Grizzled and Large Skipper, Purple-edged Copper, with Piedmont, & Bright-eyed and Yellow- spotted , the latter being the ssp constans and differing from the nominate form in being a uniform dark brown with no black spots. A family of Rock Thrushes then caught our attention, other birds seen being Water Pipit, Wheatear, Raven and Yellowhammer. Among good plants found were Alchemilla-leaved Cinquefoil- Potentilla alchemelloides, Pyrenean Hyacinth-Hyacinthus amethystinus, Martagon Lily-Liliun martagon, Pyrenean Avens- Geum pyrenaicum and four of Saxifrage.

Day 3 Thursday 10th July

Windy & cold am, hot & sunny We awoke to find the ground damp from overnight rain and rather cold, so with the forecast predicting an improvement by the afternoon, we decided to head down the valley, where the lower altitude and different habitats would enable us to hopefully find some species that we would not see during the rest our stay higher up in the mountains. We drove through Luz St Saveur and into the narrow gorge beyond, and started to climb the isolated mountain of Hautacam, where the Tour de France would finish a stage later in the month. On the climb to the summit we stopped a couple of times, before returning back down and parking next to a flowery meadow with wonderful views over Aegeles Gazost and the valley below. Almost immediately, we spied at least three Egyptian Vultures gliding along at the same height as us, with Black & Red Kite, a Booted Eagle, more Griffons, Buzzard, Whinchat, Raven, Tree Pipit and a Red-backed Shrike all seen in the vicinity. After the cold start, the sun was now rapidly breaking through the clouds and consequently butterflies were now very noticeable, with Clouded Yellow, Brimstone, Small Copper, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Meadow & Heath Fritillary, Large & Small White, Pearly & Small Heath, Wall & Large Wall Brown and various Blues all putting in an appearance.

France - Butterflies of the Pyrenees Tour Report

Norwegian Cudweed-Gnaphalium norvegicum, Alpine St John’s-wort-Hypericum richeri, Large Mediterranean Spurge- Euphorbia characias, Bloody Crane’s-bill-Geranium sanguineum, Fairy Foxglove-Erinus alpinus, Large Self-heal-Prunella grandiflora, Horned Pansy-Viola cornuta and Dark Red Helleborine-Epipactis atrorubens also added floral colour.

After partaking of our picnic lunch we descended down into the valley, stopping firstly next to the River Gave and then at a delightful roadside site near the little village of Saligos. New butterfly species seen were Speckled Wood, Wood White, Map, White Admiral, Green-veined White and Holly, Short-tailed and Long-tailed Blues, while some of the group had brief views of a Dipper along the river. Good plants were Lesser Centaury- Centaurium pulchellum, Tower Cress-Arabis turrita, Hare’s-tail Clover-Trifolium arvense, Dark Mullein-Verbascum nigrum and Thick-leaved Stonecrop- dasyphyllum.

Day 4 Friday 11th July

Sunny, hot The overnight mist was already clearing when we left the hotel and headed up the main valley to Gavarnie and its famous Cirque, parking next to the river full of the cold melt water from the still quite sizeable snow fields high up on the mountain ridges. As we crossed the small bridge and left the village into the native Mountain Pine- Pinus uncinata woodland we noted our first plants with Edelweiss-Leontopodium alpinum, Wolf’s-bane-Aconitum vulparia, Frog Orchid-Coeloglossum viride, Irish Spurge-Euphorbia hyberna Pyrenean Hogweed-Heracleum pyrenaicum and the delightful shade-loving Ramonda-Ramonda myconi all observed. Crested & Coal Tit, Goldcrest, Bullfinch, Cirl Bunting and Garden Warbler were also either seen or heard.

It was warming up earlier today, so we were already able to start identifying butterflies with Small & Green- veined White, Orange Tip, Large Wall Brown, Pearl-bordered, Heath & False Heath Fritillaries and various Ringlets including many Large Ringlets with their distinctive white chequered wing fringes. As we climbed ever higher, the full grandeur of this special place was gradually unfolding before us, until just as we neared the “hostellerie” the whole panorama of the cirque was visible, a truly magnificent sight. We then ordered drinks at the café, as we ate our baguettes with a backdrop of the “grand cascade” (reputedly the highest waterfall in ), and the vast bulk of the rest of the cirque stretching away either side of it.

Some of the more sprightly members of the group then walked the rest of the way to the foot of the waterfall, before re-joining the main group to spend the rest of the afternoon walking a different route back down to Gavarnie via a track which traverses the cliffs, and then descending via a dramatic (but safe) zigzag path, all the time giving fabulous views over the Gave Valley. More good plants were found including the endemic miniature Pyrenean Columbine-Aquilegia pyrenaica, Alpine Pasque Flower-Pulsatilla alpina, Yellow Betony-Stachys alopecurus, Pyrenean Squill-Scilla liliohyacinthus, Bird’s-nest Orchid-Neottia nidus-avis and growing directly on the damp cliffs the magnificent Long-leaved Butterwort-Pinguicula longifolia.

In the more open areas many more butterflies were seen including Wood White, Black-veined White, Purple- edged Copper, Dark Green Fritillary, Comma, Green Hairstreak, Oberthur’s Grizzled & Olive Skipper, Lefebvre’s and various Blues, while we had really close views of Crag Martin, a single Lammergeier and two immature Golden Eagles.

Day 5 Saturday 12th July

Misty, cold am, then sunny & warm Today we awoke to thick mist, but with the promise of it clearing by the afternoon, we headed up the Heas Valley stopping firstly at the Hôtellerie de Maillet, where we scanned the surrounding cliffs noting Water Pipit and Griffon Vulture, before continuing upwards to stop next to a sheep pen, where a pair of Izard, the Pyrenean version of the Chamois, were happily grazing a short distance from us. As we neared the parking area just below the dramatic Cirque de Troumouse the fog was rapidly rising from the valley below, but undaunted we set off across the springy turf for a short circular walk. We headed over to a swift flowing stream where Mark and Jason managed to find the endemic and elusive Pyrenean Brook Salamander-Euproctus asper, a normally nocturnal newt- like creature restricted to this mountain range. There were also many small pools here full of tadpoles and frog- lets of the Common Frog, at this altitude probably a very short breeding season.

A patch of limestone here was covered in colourful alpine plants including Alpine Buttercup-Ranunculus alpestris, Alpine Catchfly-Lychnis alpina, Garland Flower-Daphne cneorum, Dark Sonecrop-Sedum atratum, Cylindrical Rock Jasmine-Androsace cylindrica, and Bird’s-eye Primrose-Primula farinosa, while more acid soils nearby had Alpine Clover-Trifolium alpinum, Giant Butterwort- Pinguicula grandiflora and a few Trumpet Gentians- Gentiana acualis. On the way back to the vans an adult Alpine Accentor with a youngster gave us tantalising glimpses as the mist moved in and out.

We returned back down the winding road, warming ourselves up with hot drinks at the hotel, before taking lunch on a hillside next to a stream and then spending the rest of the afternoon moving down the valley, stopping firstly next to the little chapel at Heas, and then again even further down, amongst some flowery meadows. By now the mist had totally cleared as predicted, with the warm sun and rising temperatures bringing many butterflies out from their roosting shelters. Scarce and Common Swallowtails, Apollo’s, Large Blues, Scarce Coppers, Dark-green, Lesser Marbled, Heath and False Heath Fritillaries, Black-veined and Wood Whites were all present in large numbers, with new additions to the list being Sooty Copper, Western Dappled White, Marbled & Tufted Marbled Skipper, the elegant Amanda’s Blue, and a possible new record for this area of France, the Mountain Alcon Blue. There is an ongoing dispute amongst lepidopterists whether this is a separate species from the Alcon Blue, so obviously there is some more research to be done! Unfortunately, this spectacular show had to end sometime, as it was now time to return to the hotel after another very eventful day.

Day 6 Sunday 13th July

Sunny, hot Another fine sunny morning dawned, as we assembled in the car park with the first sighting of the day being a pair of Short-toed Eagles perched in the distance on an electricity pylon! We then drove again up the valley to Gavarnie before turning off right into the lower Ossoue Valley, passing beneath the towering cliffs up to our right and stopping firstly by the roadside there, before continuing further up and parking next to a footbridge which crossed the fast flowing stream here. We then walked down into a lovely area full of flowers including Fringed & Maiden Pink-Dianthus monspessulanus & D. deltoides, White Rockrose-Helianthemum appeninum, Mountain Pansy-Viola lutea, Yellow Woundwort-Stachys recta, the lovely Alpine Aster, and a pretty little Campion-Silene .

France - Butterflies of the Pyrenees Tour Report

Butterflies were on the wing earlier today with Common Swallowtail, Scarce & Purple-edged Copper, Apollo and Clouded Apollo, Pearl-bordered, False Heath & Knapweed Fritillary, and Silver-studded & Baton Blue, the latter new to the list here. Whilst enjoying the nature on the ground, the usual raptors were soaring over the cliffs, namely Lammergeier and Griffon Vulture, with a Rock Bunting showing well and a fleeting glimpse of a Dipper in the stream. We continued up the valley, parking in a jumble of rocks for our picnic lunch, before walking across to scan a cliff face where Mark had seen Wallcreeper on two previous occasions, but there was no sign today. The botanists did though admire some tall yellow Gentians-Gentiana burseri, the diminutive Alpine Marsh Orchid-Dactylorhiza majalis ssp alpina, Single-flowered Fleabane-Erigeron uniflorus and Hoary Cinquefoil-Potentilla argentea, while a Rock Thrush and a distant singing Ring Ouzel added avian interest.

Next, we returned back down the rough track past our previous stops, to spend the rest of the afternoon in another wonderful flowery meadow, also being full of butterflies. Dark Green, Heath, Lesser Marbled & Spotted Fritillary, Wall & Large Wall Brown, Wood & Black-veined White, various Blues, Pearly & Small Heath, and Dingy, Essex, Grizzled, Olive, and both Large & Oberthur’s Grizzled Skipper kept us amused. Jason also netted a lovely Yellow-winged Darter-Sympetrum flaveolum and three members of the group had the privilege of seeing a Southern Smooth Snake-Coronella girondica. This spot is also one of the best in the area for admiring the stunning blue English Iris-Iris latifolia in all its glory, and was a fitting end to another wonderful day.

Day 7 Monday 14th July

Sunny, hot Thankfully, as predicted by the forecast, we awoke to another clear sunny morning, so we could make for the Port de Boucharo on the Spanish border, at 2270m the highest altitude that we would attain during our weeks stay. The views are magnificent here, both into Spain and back into France, and would also hopefully give us access to species of , bird, and perhaps butterfly that we would not have seen up to now.

Once again, we firstly drove up the valley to Gavarnie, before taking the steep winding road up to the ski resort area at the Vallée des Espécières, stopping en route at a couple of places to scan the landscape. Wheatear, Water Pipit, Linnets, Red-backed Shrike, Alpine Chough, the usual vultures and many very obliging and cute Alpine Marmots were all noted. Continuing upwards, we parked the mini-bus at the Col de Tentes to walk the final 1½ km to the port, as the road is now permanently closed due to rock falls. Leaving the car park, we enjoyed the breath taking views back down towards Gavarnie on one side, and then the more extensive view into Spain and the adjacent Odessa National Park.

On the rocks and scree here, many colourful plants were starting to flower after the snow melt with Ashy Crane’s-bill-Geranium cinereum, masses of Trumpet and Spring Gentians, Alpine Moon Daisy-Leucanthemopsis alpina, Pyrenean Thistle-Carduus carlinoides, and the yellow Vitaliana-Vitaliana primulifera ssp canescens all contributing to the spectacle, while the handsome little white endemic Pyrenean Bedstraw-Galium pyrenaicum was particularly noticeable, carpeting many of the rocks. A few butterflies were also on the wing, with Lefebre’s Ringlet being the most abundant, along with De Prunner’s & Bright-eyed Ringlet, Red Admiral, Clouded Yellow and remarkably at such a high altitude a Nettle Tree Butterfly! Returning to the car park, we ate our lunch on the springy alpine turf amongst the blue Gentians, before descending to spend the rest of the afternoon searching likely spots.

France - Butterflies of the Pyrenees Tour Report

New butterfly additions were the high alpine specialist Shepherd’s Fritillary and the more lowland Marbled Fritillary, and the lovely weather gave us chance to relax, enjoy the magnificent scenery, and to practice our newfound identification skills on various Blues, Skippers, Whites, Fritillaries and Ringlets that we had already seen on previous days. Reluctantly, though the time passed all too quickly, so it was then back to the hotel for the last dinner of our stay.

Day 8 Tuesday 15th July

Sunny, hot Another lovely sunny morning…we rose early and ate our breakfast, before loading up the mini-buses, and bidding farewell to the ever hospitable Odile. We made our way down the valley for our short journey to Lourdes airport to catch the early morning flight back to the UK. We arrived in plenty of time, where Mark and Jason said their goodbyes to the group, all of us agreeing that it had been a marvellous stay in these beautiful and wildlife-rich mountains.
