The 2015 Tom Izzo Basketball Overnight Camp! Please Take the Time to Review the Following Information Welcome to the 2015 Tom Izzo Basketball Overnight Camp! Please take the time to review the following information. We are here to make sure you have an enjoyable experience and leave with lasting memories while learning more about basketball here at Michigan State. Thank you for attending this year’s camp and your continued support. Feel free to ask questions. We are here to help. Have a great time! Instructions for Registration Parking is available in Lot 63 (south of Breslin). You must enter the lot off Shaw Lane. Proceed to Spartan Stadium for registration. Signs will be posted to help you check in and get your meal card and dorm room key from the camp staff. Once checked in, check the back of your meal card and make sure that you have been assigned to a team. Divisions are named for the seven Final Four appearances under Coach Izzo, while teams are named after the many great Spartan players of the past. If you have not been assigned a team or have questions, please talk to a student manager after you pass through the registration line. (Returning campers should note there are now seven divisions, not six, and division placement may not match previous seasons as a result). Teams are randomly generated by computer based on the age and height supplied on your registration. We are unable to accommodate any special requests for team placement. We will make trades throughout the first day of camp to balance the teams and make sure that campers are placed in the correct age group. Regardless of team placement, there are opportunities to spend time with friends – i.e. lunch, dorms, guest speakers, etc. You will find the camp cheat sheet, a daily schedule and a game schedule for the camp in this packet. The play-off schedule will be distributed over e-mail and posted at sites during lunch on the last day of camp. Once checked in, please proceed to the dorms and eat dinner. Campers will be staying and eating in Holden Hall. You may enter the Breslin Center at Gate B starting at 4:00 p.m. We will begin camp at 5:30 p.m. We ask that campers sit in the gray bleachers and the parents observe from the green seats as we begin camp. Campers should come to the arena floor as their team name is called. Please be extra careful coming down the stairs and when first stepping up onto the gym floor. Check-Out Procedure: “Permission to Leave” forms will first be made available at registration on the first day. If parents need to pick up their camper at any time during camp, you must do so from Holden Hall and sign a “Permission to Leave” form. This is to ensure the safety of all campers and to make sure everyone is accounted for at all times. Camp staff may not release the camper without this form. Parking: Parents and friends may park in Lot 63, the large parking lot south of the Breslin Center, for free if they are staying to watch any part of camp. Parking in faculty/staff spaces is not permitted and will result in ticketing (this includes lots at Jenison Fieldhouse, IM West and the dorms). Overnight parking is available in Lot 83. Dorms: Campers will be housed with supervision in Holden Hall. If campers are placing a food order, campers should order it prior to 8:15 p.m. so that the food can arrive to the building prior to the doors closing at 10:00 p.m. each night. Meals: Campers will eat meals in Holden Hall. Personal items (bags, water bottles, etc.) are permitted in the cafeteria, but campers are strongly encouraged to travel as lightly as possible to camp sessions, leaving unnecessary items in their dorm room. Michigan State University assumes no liability for lost or stolen items. Game Schedules: Each camper will play seven games, the buzzer beater tournament and at least two additional play-off games. A copy of the game schedule is available in this packet and at each site. The play-off schedule will be distributed over e-mail during lunch on the last day of camp once the last games are played. During games, we ask that only players and coaches be on the court or in the bench area. There will be designated areas to view camp. Camp Photos: Photos with Coach Izzo are available Monday starting at 7:30 a.m. and can be purchased during the afternoon on the last day of camp for $15.00 inside Gate B. (Cash or Check made out to Jeff Garland). The line will begin at the Breslin Center ticket office on the southeast side of the building. Awards Ceremony: Camp will conclude with an award ceremony, our annual camp highlight tape, and a player autograph session at approximately 4:00 p.m. on the last day of camp at the Breslin Center. Parents and friends are invited to attend. You must check out of the dorms and return your room key to Holden Hall after leaving the Breslin Center. Failure to return your room key to the front desk may result in additional charges for replacement. SPARTAN BASKETBALL HISTORY AND TRADITION 1979 NCAA CHAMPIONS The 1978-79 season was truly a magical one for Coach Jud Heathcote and his Michigan State Spartans. Blending a perfect combination of individual ability, enthu- siasm and teamwork, Heathcote formed a cohesive unit that captivated the nation and sellout crowds at Jenison Field House. The Spartans compiled a 26-6 overall record and went 13-5 in the Big Ten to share the league crown with Purdue and Iowa. State steamrolled through the NCAA Tournament, ending the season on top of the college basketball world with a 75-64 victory over Larry Bird and unbeaten Indi- ana State. The 1978-79 squad gathered at Jenison Field House on Aug. 12, 1989, to play one more game against a team of former Spartan All-Stars. On a hot, sweltering night, the National Champi- onship squad, led by Earvin Johnson’s 25 points and 17 rebounds, topped the All-Stars, 95-93, before a sellout crowd of 10,004. 126 MICHIGAN STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL 2000 NCAA CHAMPIONS Tom Izzo repeatedly talked to his team about leaving its mark on the program. The 1999-2000 Spartans did more than leave their mark; they set the standard by which all future Michigan State teams would be measured. Part of being a champion is winning titles, which the Spartans accomplished in winning the Na- tional Championship, a third straight Big Ten Championship and a second consecutive Big Ten Tourna- ment title. Michigan State’s three consecutive conference crowns marked only the eighth time in league history that a team has won three straight titles.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

Eric Snow understands leadership, and it’s why he’s continued to be recognized for possessing that quality even after his NBA career ended following the ‘07-08 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Snow elaborated on his concept of leadership by penning his first book — Leading High Performers: The Ultimate Guide to Being a Fast, Fluid and Flexible Leader. In the book, Snow analyzes the leadership characteristics that helped him maintain a successful 13-year NBA career, which included NBA Finals appearances for three teams — the Seattle Supersonics, Philadelphia 76ers and Cavaliers. Now an analyst for NBA TV, Snow wrote this book not only for athletes but for people looking to enhance their opportunities for success in any walk of life. SLAMonline caught up with him at the NBA Store in New York City, where he was signing autographs for Leading High Performers.

  • Chapter 15 - Red Cedar Rebounds
Chapter 15 - Red Cedar Rebounds You cannot step twice into the same river. Heraclitus (circa 535 BC – 475 BC) While Heraclitus posited that “you cannot step twice into the same river,” the question is whether one tries a first time step into life’s river of challenges. For centuries the Red Cedar River has flowed from points east of Okemos, through Okemos and the campus of Michigan State University, and onward to points west. But, over the past half-century, only a select group of Okemos High Chieftain basketball players realized their dream of grabbing a rebound on the Chieftains home court and moving the basketball from the Chieftains O-ZONE to the Spartans IZZONE to become a Michigan State Spartan. Yet one Chieftain-cum-Spartan – Kristen Rasmussen – did step twice into the Red Cedar to return to the basketball court on which she once played Chieftain basketball and serve as head coach of the Okemos High girls’ basketball program. Over the past 60 seasons of Spartans basketball (‘60-61 to ’19-‘20), only 14 Chieftain basketball players traveled down the Red Cedar to change their uniforms from Maroon and White of the Chieftains to the Green and White of the Spartans, this happening when they stepped onto the court of Jenison Field House or the Breslin Center The “Time Line” graphics on the next two pages show the seasons in which Okemos High Chieftains were members of a Michigan State University Spartans basketball squad, with the second graphic showing the seasons (maroon) in which a Spartans basketball squad had no Chieftain.
