2005 SESSION INTRODUCED REPRINT 058404222 INTRODUCED 1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 828 2 Offered January 21, 2005 3 Commending Michael Vick. 4 ±±±±±±±±±± Patrons±±BaCote, Alexander, Barlow, Black, Brink, Carrico, Cosgrove, Eisenberg, Hamilton, Hull, Joannou, Melvin, Oder, Orrock, Phillips, Rust and Stump; Senator: Williams 5 ±±±±±±±±±± 6 WHEREAS, Michael Vick, a native of Newport News and a graduate of Warwick High School, has 7 become one of the most electrifying young stars in the National Football League (NFL); and 8 WHEREAS, Michael Vick starred for two seasons at Virginia Tech, leading the Hokies to the 9 national championship game in the 2000 Sugar Bowl and being named Rookie of the Year; and 10 WHEREAS, Michael Vick placed third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, the highest finish ever 11 for a freshman player; and 12 WHEREAS, after his sophomore season at Virginia Tech, Michael Vick applied for early entry into 13 the NFL draft and was selected first by the Atlanta Falcons, becoming the first African-American 14 quarterback ever selected as the number one draft pick; and 15 WHEREAS, Michael Vick has since become one of the most talented and exciting players in the 16 NFL and led the 2004 Atlanta Falcons to a first-place finish in their division and a place in the NFL 17 playoffs; and 18 WHEREAS, since he was seven years old, Michael Vick has been a member of the Boys & Girls 19 Clubs of Greater Hampton Roads; and 20 WHEREAS, Michael Vick benefited from the club©s activities and from the guidance provided by 21 youth development professionals who served as mentors, including James "Poo" Johnson, executive HJ828 22 director of the club and Michael Vick©s mentor; and 23 WHEREAS, Michael Vick has not forgotten the importance of the Boys & Girls Clubs and has 24 continuously given back to the organization that played such a key role in his early development as an 25 athlete and a citizen; and 26 WHEREAS, Michael Vick has appeared in an anti-violence public service campaign, provided 27 monetary donations, served as spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta and of Greater 28 Hampton Roads, and conducted football camps for members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater 29 Hampton Roads; now, therefore, be it 30 RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby 31 commend Michael Vick on his outstanding National Football League career and on his exceptional 32 generosity to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Hampton Roads; and, be it 33 RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution 34 for presentation to Michael Vick as an expression of the General Assembly©s admiration and best wishes. 1:8 3/25/10.
