RESPONDING TO THE CALL

Do we truly know the voice of Christ? Do we truly respond to the voice of our shepherd with our own distinctive voice? How often we attempt to imitate those around us, appropriating the response of another member of the flock to Christ. Perhaps we need to balance the image of being sheep of one flock with the image from the second reading, which tells us that we are all children of God. What child has precisely the same interaction with parents as his or her siblings? Instead, they frequently do and say things to distinguish themselves in the eyes of their parents. TODAY’S READINGS Whether we use the image of children or of sheep to understand our relationship with Christ, we First Reading -There is no salvation through anyone believe that we are all known and called by name. else (Acts 4:8-12). With this great gift comes a responsibility: to Psalm -The stone rejected by the builders has respond to the call with our own distinctive voice, become the cornerstone (Psalm 118). to take time to discern exactly what our call is, to Second Reading -See what love the Father has determine precisely what the will of the Father is bestowed on us that we may be called the children for each of us. The Voice of Truth “They will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.” – John 10:16

Are you in it for the money or are you in it for the love of the game? We hear this often with professional athletes. Really the same can be said for many who are employed. Some jobs have great meaning and worth--- more often than not it is how the employee sees his value and the value of the work. In John’s Gospel this weekend we hear the story of the Good Shepherd. Jesus compares the shepherd who is only in it for the money to one who is in it for the love of sheep and the mission. The one in it for the money flees when a wolf appears so as to protect himself. Consequently, the wolf has his way with the sheep. Jesus reminds his followers that He is the Good Shepherd, and they are like sheep. Because He is the Good Shepherd who cares for His flock, they respond to by following and trusting Him. The wolf is the evil one, Satan, who will do anything to confuse, scatter and kill the sheep. A good shepherd will oversee the flock from a high point to keep approaching danger away. When a sheep gets separated from the flock, the shepherd uses his staff and crook to pull the wayward sheep back. The good shepherd is always there for them. The good shepherd makes sure that they are well fed and their thirst is quenched. He provides everything they need. Many of us are like sheep and will follow whatever voice we think is true. Jesus Christ came to show us the truth, to shepherd us through a world of danger and sin. He established His Church to help us, to lead and guide us, to shepherd us. And for centuries the Church has embraced this mission. If we do not listen to the voice of truth, then we risk separation from the flock and may fall into danger. Jesus tells us, “They will hear my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd.” Take some time today to sit in quiet reflection and listen to the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, to hear what He saying to you. Pastor Extends Appreciation to Crime Watch’s Quintas Thanks to Grand Knight Mike Belkin and Council 6168, Father Erwin Belgica, Pastor of Our Lady of Grace Church in Beverly Hills and council chaplain, presented a plaque to Crime Watch Officer John Quintas, expressing appreciation on behalf of parishioners. Noting Quintas’ long stint as a volunteer traffic director, the Grand Knight coordinated with Father Erwin, Quintas and his wife, Rena, for the plaque to be presented before the 10:30 Mass April 18. Quintas had marked 23 years directing traffic from the church parking lot onto Roosevelt Boulevard after Sunday Masses, missing days only to occasionally visit family elsewhere. An inscription on the plaque thanked Quintas for his dedicated service, stressing “You kept us safe.” Quintas also directs traffic after Sunday services at Beverly Hills Community Church on Civic Circle. The couple came to Beverly Hills in 1998 from Mine Hill, New Jersey.

If you have had a change of Address & phone number, please contact the parish office at 746-2144 so we could update our records. Thank you so much for your kind assistance.

Fourth Sunday of Easter April 25, 2021 Page Six Does the Annual Pastoral Appeal Help Our Lady of Grace Church? Yes, in different ways. Here is a specific case: Because of the generous contributions to the Annual Pastoral Appeal, many of our youth group have been able to attend the annual service retreat, the Good Samaritan Project. During the week of the Good Samaritan Project for the last three years, 10-15 of our teenagers from Our Lady of Grace have been able to go for a week (except for last year!) Hope and stay at Bishop McLaughlin High School. From this base, they have gone out every day to serve in multiple locations throughout the diocese. There is a fee for this program, but this fee is not able to cover all the costs associated with this experience. There are in bussing, food, t-shirts, housing costs, etc. Chaperones and project team leaders who attend and help during this week are NOT charged anything to spend time with the the youth. The youth are blessed each evening of the week to listen to a world-class Catholic speaker who helps solidify their Catholic faith for them in a way that would not normally Lord be possible from a different perspective. There are associated costs with this undertaking (involving 250-plus youth and adult chaperones from the diocese) that are all covered by APA donations. Also, thanks to the APA contributions, Citrus County has been able to work with the newly hired diocesan Regional Associate Director of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Having this person who is tasked with specifically helping the northern deaneries (that is us!) has been a true blessing! APA has given the Bishop the flexibility to expand the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and this has actually provided the Our Lady of Grace Youth Group with much needed support at the diocesan level. There is an absolute direct benefit to our parish here at Our Lady of Grace from APA. So, when you donate to APA every year, look at the young people whom we say we want in our church, who ARE sitting in the pews, and realize that those dollars that you generously give, are helping these young people STAY in church. CONGRATULATIONS! We would like to recognize our Confirmation class who received the fullness of the Holy Spirit and became fully initiated members of the on Saturday, April 17th. Those confirmed are; Ty Ferrara (St. Eligius), Jacqueline Franco (St. Bona of ), Valerie Funez (St. Hermann of Reichenou), Kevin Hernandez (Our Lady of Guadalupe), Julissa Leal (St. Jud Thaddaeus), Patrick Long (St. Peter), Raymond O’Hanlon (St. ), Joshua Sevilla (St. ), and Grace Ward (St. Ivo of Kermartin). May they continue their faith journey strengthened by the Spirit and supported by their family and this community. Many thanks to all those who helped to make this day very special; the members of the music ministry who added so much with the beautiful music, Eli Segundo and her helpers for decorating the church, Suzanne Sellards for the beautiful pew bows, Ben Langer for taking pictures of the mass and families, Todd and Lori Cleaver the class Catechists, Evelyn and Pat McGuinness for their constant support.
