We used the Trinity and Trinotate software suites for transcriptome assembly and annotation, respectively. The quality of this as- sembly and the affiliated targeted homology searches greatly enrich the molecular knowledge on this species. -

(Crustacea, Amphipoda, Crangonyctidae) is described from Iceland. This is the second species of freshwater, subterranean, gammaridean amphipods found in Iceland and the first species of the family Crangonyctidae. Crangonyx islandicus sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species of the genus Crangonyx by combination of the following characters: the number of spines on the outer and inner lobes of the maxillipedal palp, the presence of a spine at the base of the unguis of the dactylus of gnathopods 1 and 2, stout and short uropod 3, and by a short and wide telson. The species was recorded in South, Southwest, West and Northeast Iceland from numerous springs emerging from relatively young (<10 000 years), porous lavas. The species has apparently survived Pliocene and Pleistocene glaciations in groundwater of porous lava fields and may have persisted in Iceland for several million years. This species differs from most species of the North and South American genus Hyalella in the number of setae on the inner plate of maxilla 1 and maxilla 2, characters it shares with Hyalella faxoni Stebbing, 1903. Nevertheless, H. faxoni, from the Volcan Barva in Costa Rica, lacks a dorsal process on pereionites 1 and 2. Also, this new species differs from other described Hyalella species in Mex- ico by the shape of the palp on maxilla 1, the number of setae on the uropods, and the shape of the telson. -

Takhteev In this issue we present an extensive article prepared by Prof. Vadim V. Takhteev, which is based on his long time effort in the study of diversity of amphipods in Lake Baikal and its watershed. This paper is highly polemical and may even seem either archaic or heretical in the time of domination of the phylogenetic paradigms in systematics. The author advocates classical morphological taxonomy, which own tradition, methods (disregarding whether we call it typology or not) and the language are significantly older than the modern phylogenetic approach. -

The material was collected during 12 summer expeditions organized from Diversity; 1997 to 2013. In all, 24 pelagic and 116 benthic taxa were recorded, most of them widely Distribution distributed Arctic-boreal species. The advection of different water masses from the shelf had a direct impact on the structure of the pelagic Malacostraca communities, resulting in the clear dominance of the sub-arctic hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum in Kongsfjorden and the great abundance of Decapoda larvae in Hornsund. The taxonomic, functional and size compositions of the benthic malacostracan assemblages varied between the two fjords, and also between the glacier-proximate inner bays and the main fjord basins, as a result of the varying dominance patterns of the same assemblage of species. There was a significant drop in species richness in the strongly disturbed glacial bays of both fjords, but only in Hornsund was this accompanied by a significant decrease in density and diversity, probably due to greater isolation and poorer quality of sediment organic matter in its innermost basin. -

Abstract: Gammaridea and Corophiidea amphipod species from the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan were listed for the first time; their faunas were compared on the basis of bibliographic information and material collected in one locality at Beagle Channel (Isla Becasses). The species Schraderia serraticauda and Heterophoxus trichosus (collected at Isla Becasses) were cited for the first time for the Magellan region; Schraderia is the first generic record for this region. A total of 127 species were reported for the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan. Sixty-two species were shared between both passages (71.3 % similarity). The amphipod species represented 34 families and 83 genera. The similarity at genus level was 86.4 %, whereas 23 of the 34 families were present in both areas. For all species, 86 had bathymetric ranges above 100 m and only 12 species ranged below 200 m depth. In the Beagle Channel, only one species had a depth record greater than 150 m, whereas in the Straits of Magellan, 15 had such a record. -

Genus Homoeogammarus distribution area extended from Mediterranean to Atlantic islands.
