We have found a formula for computing the n-point correlation function hΩjT [φ(x1)φ(x2) ··· φ(xn)] jΩi: Let us now focus on computing the quantities that can actually be measured: cross sections and decay rates. These quantities can be connected to a more primitive quantity: the S-matrix. Scattering Cross Section In order to study the behavior of elementary particles we need to perform scattering experiments. We can collide two beams of particles with well-defined momenta and then observe what comes out. The likelihood of any particular final state can be expressed in terms of the cross section, a quantity that is intrinsic to the colliding particles. Let us consider a target at rest. It is made out of particles of type A, with number density ρA (particles per unit volume). Now aim at this target a bunch of particles of type B, with number density ρB and velocity v. Let us take lA and lB as the lengths of the bunches of particles. Then we expect the total number of scattering events to be proportional to ρA; ρB; lA; lB, and the cross- sectional area A common to the two bunches. The cross-section, denoted by σ, is the total number of events divided by all these quantities Number of scattering events σ ≡ : (1) (ρAlA)(ρBlB) A We note that the above definition is symmetric between the A’s and B’s. Thus we could have taken the B’s to be at rest. We could also work in any other reference frame. The cross-section has units of area. It is the effective area of a chunk taken out of one beam, by each particle in the other beam, that subsequently becomes the final state we are interested in. The particle density is generally larger at the center of the beam than at the edges. We will assume that both the range of the interaction between the particles and the width of the individual particle wave packets are small compared to the beam diameter. We can then consider ρA and ρB to be constant in the following discussions. To compute the event rate in an actual accelerator we must integrate over the beam area. That is, Z 2 Number of events = σ (lAlB) d x ρA(x)ρB(x): (2) If the densities are constant, or if we use the above formula to compute an effective area A of the beams, then we have simply N N Number of events = σ A B ; (3) A where NA and NB are the total numbers of A and B particles. Cross sections for many different processes may be relevant to a single scattering experiment. For example, in e+e− collisions, one can measure the cross sections for the production of µ+µ−, τ +τ −, µ+µ−γ, µ+µ−γγ, etc., processes involving hadron production, and on top of all these the scattering of e+e−. We wish to measure not only what the final-state particles are, but also the momenta with which they come out. In this case, the definition of σ Number of scattering events σ ≡ : (4) (ρAlA)(ρBlB) A still works, but if we specify the exact momenta desired, σ will be infinitesimal. The solution is to define the differential cross section, dσ 3 3 : (d p1 ··· d pn) It is simply the quantity that, when integrated over any small 3 3 d p1 ··· d pn; gives the cross section for scattering into that region of final-state momentum space. The various final state momenta are not all independent. Four components will always be constrained by 4-momentum conservation (the delta function). In the simplest case, where there are only two final-state particles, this leaves only two unconstrained momentum components. They are usually taken to be the angles θ and φ of the momentum of one of the particles. The particle’s half-life is τ · ln 2: In non-relativistic quantum mechanics, an unstable atomic state shows up in scattering exper- iments as a resonance. The Breit-Wigner formula Eq. (6) also applies in relativistic quantum mechanics. It gives the scattering amplitude for processes in which initial particles combine to form an unstable particle, which then decays. The unstable particle, viewed as an excited state of the vacuum, is a direct analogue of the unstable non-relativistic atomic state. If we call the 4-momentum of the unstable particle p and its mass m, we can make a relativis- tically invariant generalization of Eq. Although the two expressions in Eq. Let us invoke the concept of wavepackets to model this. We represent the initial states using wavepackets. Then evolve this initial state for a very long time with the time-evolution operator exp (−iHt) of the interacting field theory, and overlap the resulting final state with wavepackets representing some desired set of final-state particles. This gives the probability amplitude for producing that final state, which is simply related to the cross section. The wavepackets are localized in space, so each can be constructed independently of the others. States constructed this way are called in and out states. Note that we are using Heisenberg picture: States are time-independent. But the name we give a state depends on the eigenvalues or expectation values of time-dependent operators. Thus states with different names constructed at different times have a nontrivial overlap, which depends on the time dependence of the operators. Even if the theory contains interactions, the particles have some probability of simply missing one another.

    12 Scattering in three dimensions 12.1 Cross sections and geometry Most experiments in physics consist of sending one particle to collide with another, and looking at what comes out. The quantity we can usually measure is the scattering cross section: by analogy with classical scattering of hard spheres, we assuming that scattering occurs if the particles ‘hit’ each other. The cross section is the apparent ‘target area’. The total scattering cross section can be determined by the reduction in intensity of a beam of particles passing through a region on ‘targets’, while the differential scattering cross section requires detecting the scattered particles at different angles. We will use spherical polar coordinates, with the scattering potential located at the origin and the plane wave incident flux parallel to the z direction. In this coordinate system, scattering processes dσ are symmetric about φ, so dΩ will be independent of φ. We will also use a purely classical concept, the impact parameter b which is defined as the distance of the incident particle from the z-axis prior to scattering. Provided that the interaction between particle and scattering centre is localised to the region around r = 0, we can regard the incident and scattered particles as free when they are far from the scattering centre. We just need the result that we obtained for a constant perturbation, Fermi’s Golden Rule, to compute the rate of transitions between the initial state (free particle of momentum p) to the final state (free particle of momentum p0).

  • 3 Scattering Theory
    3 Scattering theory In order to find the cross sections for reactions in terms of the interactions between the reacting nuclei, we have to solve the Schr¨odinger equation for the wave function of quantum mechanics. Scattering theory tells us how to find these wave functions for the positive (scattering) energies that are needed. We start with the simplest case of finite spherical real potentials between two interacting nuclei in section 3.1, and use a partial wave anal- ysis to derive expressions for the elastic scattering cross sections. We then progressively generalise the analysis to allow for long-ranged Coulomb po- tentials, and also complex-valued optical potentials. Section 3.2 presents the quantum mechanical methods to handle multiple kinds of reaction outcomes, each outcome being described by its own set of partial-wave channels, and section 3.3 then describes how multi-channel methods may be reformulated using integral expressions instead of sets of coupled differential equations. We end the chapter by showing in section 3.4 how the Pauli Principle re- quires us to describe sets identical particles, and by showing in section 3.5 how Maxwell’s equations for electromagnetic field may, in the one-photon approximation, be combined with the Schr¨odinger equation for the nucle- ons. Then we can describe photo-nuclear reactions such as photo-capture and disintegration in a uniform framework. 3.1 Elastic scattering from spherical potentials When the potential between two interacting nuclei does not depend on their relative orientiation, we say that this potential is spherical. In that case, the only reaction that can occur is elastic scattering, which we now proceed to calculate using the method of expansion in partial waves.

    2 Gamma-Ray Interactions with Matter G. Nelson and D. ReWy 2.1 INTRODUCTION A knowledge of gamma-ray interactions is important to the nondestructive assayist in order to understand gamma-ray detection and attenuation. A gamma ray must interact with a detector in order to be “seen.” Although the major isotopes of uranium and plutonium emit gamma rays at fixed energies and rates, the gamma-ray intensity measured outside a sample is always attenuated because of gamma-ray interactions with the sample. This attenuation must be carefully considered when using gamma-ray NDA instruments. This chapter discusses the exponential attenuation of gamma rays in bulk mater- ials and describes the major gamma-ray interactions, gamma-ray shielding, filtering, and collimation. The treatment given here is necessarily brief. For a more detailed discussion, see Refs. 1 and 2. 2.2 EXPONENTIAL A~ATION Gamma rays were first identified in 1900 by Becquerel and VMard as a component of the radiation from uranium and radium that had much higher penetrability than alpha and beta particles. In 1909, Soddy and Russell found that gamma-ray attenuation followed an exponential law and that the ratio of the attenuation coefficient to the density of the attenuating material was nearly constant for all materials. 2.2.1 The Fundamental Law of Gamma-Ray Attenuation Figure 2.1 illustrates a simple attenuation experiment.     Lecture 5 — Wave and particle beams. 1 What can we learn from scattering experiments • The crystal structure, i.e., the position of the atoms in the crystal averaged over a large number of unit cells and over time. This information is extracted from Bragg diffraction. • The deviation from perfect periodicity. All real crystals have a finite size and all atoms are subject to thermal motion (at zero temperature, to zero-point motion). The general con- sequence of these deviations from perfect periodicity is that the scattering will no longer occur exactly at the RL points (δ functions), but will be “spread out”. Finite-size effects and fluctuations of the lattice parameters produce peak broadening without altering the integrated cross section (amount of “scattering power”) of the Bragg peaks. Fluctuation in the atomic positions (e.g., due to thermal motion) or in the scattering amplitude of the individual atomic sites (e.g., due to substitutions of one atomic species with another), give rise to a selective reduction of the intensity of certain Bragg peaks by the so-called Debye- Waller factor, and to the appearance of intensity elsewhere in reciprocal space (diffuse scattering). • The case of liquids and glasses. Here, crystalline order is absent, and so are Bragg diffraction peaks, so that all the scattering is “diffuse”. Nonetheless, scattering of X-rays and neutrons from liquids and glasses is exploited to extract radial distribution functions — in essence, the probability of finding a certain atomic species at a given distance from another species. • The magnetic structure. Neutron possess a dipole moment and are strongly affected by the presence of internal magnetic fields in the crystals, generated by the magnetic moments of unpaired electrons.

C.1 ATTENUATION, SCATTERING, AND ABSORPTION When a primary x-ray beam passesthrough matter, it becomesweaker or attenuated as photons are progressively removed from it. This attenuation takes place by two competing processes:scattering and absorption.For our purposes, which involve diagnostic energy x rays and low-atomic-number elements, the distinction between scattering losses and absorption losses is clear. Scattering lossesrefer to the energy removed from the primary beam by photons that are redirected by (mainly Compton) scattering events.The energy is carried away from the site of the primary interaction. Absorption lossesrefer to the energy removed from the primary beam and transferred locally to the lattice in the form of heat. Absorbed energy is derived from the photoelectron in photoelectric interactions and from the recoil electron in Compton events. Energy that is lost from the primary flux by other than Compton scatteredradiation may neverthelessultimately appear as scattered radiation in the form of bremsstrahlung, k-fluorescence, or annihilation gamma rays.
