TONIGHT’S GAME -The Penguins return home to begin a three-game homestand by welcoming the Philadelphia Flyers (TV: AT&T ; Radio: 105.9 The X) to PPG Paints Arena. -Last year the Penguins swept the Flyers, 4-0, in the regular-season series, then beat them, 4-2, in the First Round of the 2018 . -That marked the second time in the history of the series between the teams that the Pens swept the Flyers (8-0 in 2006-07). -Here at PPG Paints Arena the Pens are 5-1 in their last six games against the Flyers. Before this run, the Pens were just 2-10-1 at home against the Flyers in the regular season since the building opened in 2010.

QUICK HITS

1) The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will hold its annual holiday toy drive tonight. Penguins’ wives and girlfriends will be on hand collecting donations at the large school bus located outside the Highmark Gate (next to Centre Avenue) starting at 5:30 pm. Fans who bring a new, unwrapped toy or make a cash donation that night will be entered to win exciting Penguins prizes.

2) Since the Penguins gave up four power-play goals to the on November 15, the Pens are 12 for 12 on the PK over the past seven games. If you eliminate that game from the Pens’ totals, the team is 54 for 62 (87.1%) on the PK in their other 23 games.

3) This is the Pens’ longest streak this season of not allowing an opposition power-play goal and the team’s longest such streak since a nine-game run between Dec 21, 2015-Jan. 9, 2016 (24 for 24 during that stretch). The nine-game streak in 2015-16 is the longest such one under head coach Mike Sullivan.

4) Pittsburgh’s franchise record for consecutive games without allowing an opposition power-play goal was 10 games from Oct. 8- Nov.8, 2014 (37 for 37 during stretch).

5) The loss in Colorado dropped the Pens to 7-1-1 this year against the Western Conference. Not only was it Pittsburgh’s first interconference setback of this campaign, but it was its first such loss since Jan. 25, 2018. The Pens had earned points in 16-straight games (14-0-2) against the Western Conference, the longest such streak in club history.

TEAM NOTES:

DECEMBER PREVIEW The Pens kick off the month of December tonight by hosting the Flyers. A 3-1-2 overall record the past two weeks has Pittsburgh back in the thick of the playoff hunt. But the Pens are still on the outside looking in, so they’ll want to make their move during a 15-game schedule here in December, which includes eight home games. By the time 2019 rolls around, the Pens will be closing in on the midway point of the regular season. One key to continuing their ascension up the standings will be re-establishing the home dominance of the past few seasons. The Pens are trending in the right direction in this regard, having won back-to-back home contests entering this game; having gained standings points in three-straight home contests (2-0-1); and having compiled a 3-1-1 home mark in their past five here at PPG Paints Arena.

CAPTAIN STAYS HOT Sidney Crosby registered a natural hat trick in Wednesday’s loss at Colorado, his 11th career hat trick. His goals, all of which have come during his last 15 games, gave him a team-high 13 on the season. During that span, he has totaled 23 points (13G-10A). From the NHL Morning Skate: Crosby notched his 11th career hat trick with all three goals coming in a span of 5:35. Only three players in Penguins history have scored three goals in less than 5:00 of play: Nils Ekman (4:10 on Nov. 8, 2006), Lowell MacDonald (4:17 on Nov. 13, 1973) and (4:55 on March 10, 1976). (40) and Evgeni Malkin (12) are the only players in franchise history with more hat tricks than Crosby’s 11.

ON A ROLL Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel enter tonight’s game on a hot streak, much like the one they had last year against the Flyers. Crosby was the Pens’ leading scorer in last year’s regular-season series with nine points (2G-7A), while Guentzel was second with six (2G-4A). Those numbers were nothing compared to what the duo accomplished during the First Round playoff series against Philadelphia, when they combined for 12 goals and 26 points. Below is a look at what Crosby and Guentzel produced against Philadelphia last year:

Crosby Season GP G A PTS +/- Regular 4 2 7 9 8 Playoffs 6 6 7 13 7 TOTALS 10 8 14 22 15

Guentzel Season GP G A PTS +/- Regular 4 2 4 6 5 Playoffs 6 6 7 13 10 TOTALS 10 8 11 19 15

POTENTIAL RETURN? The Penguins could have Patric Hornqvist in the lineup tonight against the Flyers. He has missed the past three games due to a concussion. His return would be a huge boost, as Hornqvist had five goals and nine points in the seven games preceding his absence. Last year, Hornqvist scored twice in four regular-season games against the Flyers, plus two goals and six points in four games during the 2018 playoff series between the teams. In eight home regular-season games against the Flyers since joining the Penguins, Hornqvist has eight points (4G-4A). He has goals in four of his last five home games against Philadelphia.

A TRIO OF FIRSTS During the Pens’ brief two-game road trip earlier this week, three Penguins celebrated firsts. Rookie defenseman Juuso Riikola earned his first NHL point with an assist on Sidney Crosby’s hat trick goal against Colorado. One night earlier, Garrett Wilson notched his first NHL regular-season point when he set up Derek Grant’s goal (Wilson had a playoff helper with Florida in 2016). Speaking of Grant, his goal was his first tally with Pittsburgh.

HOME STREAKS As mentioned above, the Pens are 2-0-1 in their last three home games. Not surprisingly, several players have put together home point streaks entering tonight:

*Phil Kessel owns a five-game streak (2G-4A-6PTS). *Evgeni Malkin has a four-game streak (1G-5A-6PTS). *Sidney Crosby has had multiple points in each of the past three home games he has dressed (2G-5A-7PTS). *Jake Guentzel has a three-game streak (5G-1A-6PTS). He had a hat trick in the Pens’ last home game against Columbus, the first of his regular-season career. *Kris Letang has four assists in his last two home contests. *Tanner Pearson has a three-game goal/point-scoring streak (3G-1A-4PTS).

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have not had a power play opportunity since the second period of their game on November 23 vs. the New York Rangers. The NHL began tracking power play opportunities in games at the start of the 1977-78 season; since that point, this is the first time the Flyers have ever gone two consecutive games without a power play. The two games are just the 16th and 17th in that timeframe without any opportunities.

The Flyers continue to operate as the NHL’s best faceoff team with a 55.6 percent rating heading into last night’s games, ahead of Los Angeles’s 52.8 percent. The team’s six primary faceoff players are as follows:

Scott Laughton – 63.4 pct Jordan Weal – 59.7 pct Claude Giroux – 59.3 pct Nolan Patrick – 55.7 pct Jori Lehtera – 55.3 pct Sean Couturier – 53.2 pct

There were 142 players in the NHL heading into last night’s games who had taken at least 110 faceoffs this year, and of that group, Laughton leads the league. Weal is third, Giroux is fourth, Patrick is 21st, Lehtera is 27th, and Couturier is 43rd. Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), came to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12).
