Culture Heritage Street and Heritage Brand Tourism: Case Study of Beijing Dashilar Culture Heritage Street A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Lang Liu Brunel Business School Brunel University London March 2018 Abstract Purpose: Derived from the corporate heritage brand theory, this research studies Beijing Dashilar Culture Heritage Street – one of the most famous culture streets in China. It intellectualises and addresses the crucial elements of corporate culture heritage street brand identity such as architecture and design, tourist convenience and traditional goods and services, which is supporting heritage brand identity theory by confirming the effect of key traits: symbol, design and style as well as product or service focus. Moreover, it proves the effect of corporate heritage brand experience of Dashilar visitors by which corporate culture heritage street brand identity towards to overall tourism satisfaction. This study also investigates the relationship between corporate culture heritage street brand identity and tourism satisfaction. Finally, it creatively establishes the moderating elements in these relationships, which are psychological cognitive awareness of history and culture. Design/methodology/approach: A conceptual research framework of corporate culture heritage street brand identity is developed from the literature review and pilot research analysis of secondary comments from well-known online platform TripAdvisor. Further semi-structured in-depth interviews were performed with volunteered participants who have actual Dashilar visiting experience for the research validity enhancement and questionnaire design. The main research method approach of this study is quantitative questionnaire survey which is adapted to examine the conceptual framework. To assuring the authenticity of this study, the the paper-based questionnaire survey was accomplished in Dashilar area in Beijing, China. -

Redevelopment of historic city centers that characterized this change has been rampant and resulted in the loss of significant historic resources. Despite these losses, substantial historic neighborhoods survive and even thrive with some degree of integrity. This dissertation identifies the multiple social, political, and economic factors that contribute to the protection and preservation of these neighborhoods by examining neighborhoods in the cities of Beijing and Pingyao as case studies. One focus of the study is capturing the perspective of residential communities on the value of their neighborhoods and their capacity and willingness to become involved in preservation decision-making. The findings indicate the presence of a complex interplay of public and private interests overlaid by changing policy and economic limitations that are creating new opportunities for public involvement. Although the Pingyao case study represents a largely intact historic city that is also a World Heritage Site, the local ii focus on tourism has disenfranchised residents in order to focus on the perceived needs of tourists. -

Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers. -

TRAVEL eijing’s hutongs—narrow alleys or side streets—were once a city mainstay. Back in those days, the location of a hutong, formed by the space between the siheyuan (court- Byards of homes), was significant: In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), they were organized by social rank; the highest- ranking elite lived closest to the Forbidden City. Today, many hutongs have been demolished to make way for wide avenues and modern high-rises. Nevertheless, everything old is new again, and the surviving hutongs in the city’s northeast districts are now home to a hip revival. A leisurely Saturday spent strolling the hutongs between Gulou (the Drum Tower) and Yonghegong (the Lama Temple) offers a good dose of historic Beijing as well as its present-day underground youth culture. 10 A.M. YONGHEGONG Begin your journey at Yonghegong, one of Beijing’s most extraordinary and often-overlooked temples. Take the Beijing subway line 5 or 2 to the Yonghegong station and alight at Exit C. Hutongs are narrow streets formed by rows of Siheyuans (quadrangle dwellings), a traditional type of Chinese architecture consists of four houses surrounding a courtyard. The architectural layout of Siheyuan is four houses surrounding a courtyard. There are several types of Siheyuans, including the Beijing Siheyuan. Along with the development of Beijing since 1949, numerous Siheyuans were demolished. However, since the 1980s, many Hutongs were brought under national and local protection. Some of the best preserved Hutongs, especially those in the center areas of Beijing, are now more commercialized than they were prior to the ‘80s. This paper discusses the causes as well as consequences of such commercialization. Literature concerning the Hutongs frequently discusses the Hutongs' history and the shift in their architectural design, as well as other aspects that have changed over time. By contrast, this paper discusses a special phenomenon of Hutongs in Beijing — commercialization — and focuses on the causes and results of it. -

Reina Mercedes 1, 41012 Sevilla, Spain† Abstract The transformation of Beijing's historic center is in need of an evaluation from the standpoint of authenticity, a concept increasingly used and constantly redefined. Beginning with a heritage-based definition of authenticity, this article will present a review of the urban intervention policies that have been implemented in Beijing's inner city hutongs since the Revolution in 1949, evaluating their effect on the capital's preservation. Then, the paper will continue describing how current urban redevelopment is assuming contemporary definitions of urban authenticity emanating from the creative city paradigm and the tourism industry, leaving a lasting effect on its vernacular heritage. Taking the historical area of Guozijian as a case study, this article will evaluate the integration of contemporary commercial architecture into this historic setting. This evaluation will highlight how flawed conceptions of authenticity have brought about an ongoing gentrification process that is displacing a large share of the population, a fundamental component of urban heritage authenticity. Keywords Urban heritage, creative city, authenticity, urban renovation, gentrification Introduction Contemporary debate about urban authenticity revolves around a series of issues with an important economic dimension. The foremost involves heritage, which is the departure point of this paper. Even though the discussion among experts regarding authenticity and architectural heritage has reached a certain consensus (De Naeyer et al., 2000), it vanishes when heritage assets characterized by constant change, such as cities, are addressed. -
