Ray Manzarek La recent desaparició de ManzareK el passat 20 de maig ha ressuscitat l’interès per la seva figura, que ha romàs durant molts anys en un segon pla forçat pel pes de la llegenda Morrison. Sens dubte, podríem parlar d’ell a títol pòstum com l’altra gran ànima creativa del grup. Molt s’ha parlat i escrit de Jim Morrison com a mite musical, artístic, generacional i, fins i tot, eròtic. I, de fet, molt de tot plegat pertany al terreny de les especulacions. Però, més enllà d’aquestes, és de justícia reconèixer el paper del teclista de Chicago com el líder a l’ombra de la banda, el perfecte contrapès al tan famós com probablement sobredimensionat eixelebrament de Morrison1. Ray Manzarek i Jim Morrison Ray ManzareK2, fill d’emigrants polonesos establerts a la zona del South Side de Chicago, comença a tocar el piano als 7 anys. Molt influït per un llibre conegut com a Little Red Book, de John Thompson, que va rebre del seu professor de música, ManzareK munta un grup amb els seus germans Rick i Jim mentre és a l’institut. Més tard, fa Econòmiques a la DePaul University, encara a Chicago. Desenganyat, deixa la carrera i es passa a l’escola de cinema d’aquesta mateixa universitat, on coneix la seva futura esposa, Dorothy Fujikawa, amb la qual rodarà Evergreen3 (1964), una pel·lícula també protagonitzada per Henry Crismonde, qui cedirà el seu piano i sala d’estar per al primer assaig dels Doors el setembre de 1965. ManzareK i Morrison, segons la llegenda, es coneixeren a la platja de Venice el juliol de 1965. Ambdós eren estudiants de cinema a l’UCLA. Morrison li recità la lletra de la futura Moonlight Drive4. Quatre anys abans, però, ManzareK ja actuava amb un trio de jazz format amb dos companys d’universitat: John Halliberton al contrabaix i Sam Beale a la bateria5. Ray Manzarek amb el seu trio, el 29 de març de 1961 Una de les particularitats més importants en la definició del seu estil com a teclista dels Doors és que fou un dels primers en incorporar la darrera tecnologia de l’època pel que fa als teclats: Vox Continental, Fender Rhodes, Gibson G101 (artífexs del so llegendari de Light my Fire6: part John Coltrane, part Bach), Farfisa i Hammond. Amb el Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, ManzareK podia exercir el paper de baixista, tal com feien els organistes de jazz des de Fats Waller, amb la mà esquerra, mentre amb la dreta dibuixava melodies i solos d’estil molt personal, on deixava entreveure els seus sòlids fonaments d’origen jazzístic i clàssic. 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7ydsC3lBvw 4 Vega, Inés. I encara més: ManzareK despatxà aquesta qüestió al·legant que preferia el grup “com si fos un diamant de quatre costats en lloc d’un mal pentagrama” 7. Fins al punt que en directe mai aparegueren amb un baixista, recaient la responsabilitat de les línies de baix plenament en el teclista de Chicago. Tot i així, en els discos Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun i The Soft Parade, podem escoltar les línies de baix de Doug Lubahn8, l’extraoficial cinquè membre del grup, contractat exclusivament com a músic de sessió. El primer aportava la polivalència i energia del seu admirat Elvin Jones 10 i del segon es pot destacar l’originalitat del seu estil d’arrel flamenca, blues, folK i jazz 11 i l’autoria de cançons emblemàtiques com Light my Fire, Love Her Madly o Touch Me. Paul Ferrara Part del material que apareix en el documental és obra de Paul Ferrara 12, amic de Morrison i Ray ManzareK de l'època en què eren estudiants a l’UCLA. Ferrara fou el primer fotògraf del grup i és un dels responsables principals de l’establiment de Morrison com a icona dels anys 60 en l’imaginari global a través dels seus retrats. HWY: An American Pastoral13, dirigit per Ferrara i amb Morrison com a principal protagonista, és un film d’uns 50 minuts de caire obertament experimental, seguint l’estil Direct Cinema14. Les imatges de Morrison conduint pel desert a tota velocitat que es poden veure en el documental de DiCillo són fragments de la filmació original15. Tot i així, com sol passar amb les pel·lícules del director nord-americà, la controvèrsia estava servida per un plantejament efectista centrat en el vessant sensacionalista de la conducta de Morrison i la seva relació amb l’alcohol i altres drogues. En una entrevista, ManzareK comentava sobre el film que “no hi veus mai el costat intel·lectual de Jim [...], l’humor, l’encant, l’elegància [...]” 17. Tornant a l’inici del que plantejàvem en aquest dossier, en general potser s’ha fet massa incís en la llegenda autodestructiva de Morrison que no pas en els trets més positius de la seva personalitat real.

    Benny Carter Bennett Lester Carter (August 8, 1907 – July 12, 2003) was an American jazz alto saxophonist, trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader. He was a major figure in jazz from the 1930s to the 1990s, and was recognised as such by other jazz musicians who called him King. As a youth, Carter lived in Harlem around the corner from Bubber Miley who was Duke Ellington's star trumpeter. Carter was inspired by Miley and bought a trumpet, but when he found he couldn't play like Miley he traded the trumpet in for a saxophone. Carter began playing professionally at 15. He first recorded in 1928 and formed his first big band the following year. He played with Fletcher Henderson in 1930 and 1931, then briefly led McKinney's Cotton Pickers before returning to lead his own band in 1932. He also arranged for Henderson and Duke Ellington during these years and wrote two hits, "Blues in My Heart" and "When Lights are Low." By the early 1930s he and Johnny Hodges were considered the leading alto players of the day. Carter also quickly became a leading trumpet soloist, having rediscovered the instrument. He recorded extensively on trumpet in the 1930s. In 1935 he moved to Europe, where he became staff arranger for the British Broadcasting Corporation dance orchestra and made several records. He returned to the United States in 1938 and led a big band and sextet before moving to Los Angeles in 1943 to write for movie studios. Carter continued writing and performing into his 90s. He arranged for Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Sarah Vaughan, among many others.

RADIO CAROLINE - a European pirate radio station that started transmissions on Easter Saturday 1964 from a ship anchored in international waters off the coast of Felixstowe, Suffolk, England. It was unlicensed by any government for most of its life and it was labelled a pirate radio station. Although one of a number of unlicensed radio stations based on ships anchored off Britain, Radio Caroline was the first such station to broadcast all day using the English language. This, together with the station’s tenacity in surviving for some 40 years, has established Radio Caroline as a household name for offshore radio. A legal, onshore version of Radio Caroline continues to broadcast via several methods, predominantly via satellite and over the internet.
