Term 2 Week 8 22 June 2018 Principal Matters by Mark Watson

Multicultural Day Last Friday we held our annual Multicultural Day with the theme for this year, “Cultures of Caring”. Students from Years 7 to 11 rotated through a series of activities on the day that included: Mr Lewy, a parent from the school and guest speaker for the day, cultural rooms organised by students, a yoga session and some flamenco dancing. For lunch, students were able to choose from a wide variety of delicious cultural dishes. This year, we had great weather, which meant our soccer final could be played at lunchtime. Congratulations to our Year 11 team who defeated our Year 12 team in a penalty shoot out. It was a very close and exciting game, a great curtain raiser for the World Cup. After lunch, the whole school participated in our annual Multicultural Day concert. During the concert, the LGBTQI+ room was voted by the students as the most popular cultural room of the day. A big thank you goes to the ESL, LOTE, Support and Hearing staff for organising the day. Thanks also to all of the parents who prepared the wonderful food for lunch.

Year 10 Subject Selection for Year 11 2019 This week we began our subject selection process with Year 10 thinking about their subject choices over the next three weeks. Their choices will be made online when they return after the holidays. On Monday, students were given an information booklet and a presentation that covered the courses on offer for 2019. This was followed by a two period taster session where Year 10 were able to sit in on a short taster session of the courses in which they might be interested. The information booklet and slide presentation for students has been emailed to all Year 10 parents so they can consider options with their children. Next week, all Year 10 students will take part in a coaching session with a staff member to assist them with their subject selection. Parents are welcome to take part in these sessions, with some being held next Tuesday evening during the parent teacher night. A large number of staff have being working with students, from giving presentations to running taster classes, and next week, coaching students. If parents would like assistance with the subject selection process, please contact the school.

Surprise Breakfast for Year 12 On Wednesday this week, Mrs Gettens and Mrs Mercer organised a surprise breakfast for Year 12 students. They both were keen to acknowledge the tre- mendous effort Year 12 students were making with their studies and wanted to do something nice for them that focused on their wellbeing. The result was a steady supply of hot chocolate, marshmallows, croissants and strawberries. A number of staff also helped out on the morning serving the students.

Year 8 and 10 Parent Teacher Night Next Tuesday afternoon and evening, Parent Teacher meetings will be held in the hall for students in Years 8 and 10. The afternoon will run from 3:30pm until 7:30pm. Bookings can be made through the parent portal on Sentral. If you are unable to make a booking or are unable to access the Parent Portal, please contact the school by email on [email protected]

Report Update Years 8 and 10 reports will be published to parents at the end of Friday this week. Years 7 and 9 reports will be published to parents at the end of next Friday, 29 June. Reports are available through the Parent Portal. If you do not have access to the Parent Portal, or your child’s report is not available by the end of the Monday after the reports are published, please contact the school.

SRC Movie Night and School Spirit Week Next week the SRC are running “School Spirit Week”. They have a lot planned for the week with a mufti day on Wednesday and a movie evening on Thursday, with gates opening at 5:00pm for a 6:00pm show. If temperatures are like this week, everyone will need to rug up – however, there will be warm food available for sale at the show. This is a ticketed event and tickets will go on sale on Monday at school. St Ives High students, staff and families are welcome. Thanks to the SRC for their initiative with this event. It is sure to be incredible!

Girls Softball to the State Championships Congratulations to the members of our Girls knockout softball side. They successfully made it to the State knockout Championships following their success in the elimination rounds, only suffering one defeat. NS5 Business Innovation Challenge at Macquarie University On Thursday and Friday this week, Students in Years 10 and 11 have been taking part in an NS5 Business Innovation Challenge at Macquarie University, run by Incept Labs. The idea of the program is that students from different schools are put into teams and they are asked to develop solutions to a specific problem that is experienced by a real business. The teams pitch their best ideas for a solution to the company and the company request the group with the best pitch to further develop their ideas. This is a real world learning challenge. There are more information and pictures on our Facebook page. Thanks go to Ms Mercer for her organisation of this event and to Mr Zaboklicki for his supervision.

STEMM workshop A lucky group of students visited the SAN Hospital this week to take part in a STEMM presentation from medical staff from the hospital. Participants heard from inspiring speakers who told their life stories about how they entered into the medical field. Thanks to Mr Holmes for organising the event and to Mrs Bodley and Mrs Kiernan for their support. See the full report in this newsletter.

Police Advice This week we were sent some advice for students from our school’s Police Youth Liaison Office, Senior Constable Hart. The material focuses on student safety and security. The information is attached to this newsletter.

YEAR 10 STEMM BREAKFAST SEMINAR—INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF GIRLS!

On Wednesday 20 June some Year 10 girls attended the STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, Medicine) Breakfast Seminar and Careers Forum at the Clinical Education Centre at the Adventist Hospital. A showcase of some incredibly tal- ented and inspiring female hospital profes- sionals from medical, surgical, nursing and allied health shared their experiences and imagination to encourage female students to enter the STEMM professions. The underrepresentation of women in STEMM fields and low participation can be traced back to the school years; however, the very personal and authentic conversations with girls motivated many to consider a career in one of those fields.

The women who spoke were diverse in background, age and in their journey to break the barriers in traditionally male- dominated areas. Nadine Thompson, Chief Radiographer began the morning followed by Dr Pecky De Silva – Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon; Dr Michelle Atkinson – Orthopaedic/Spine Surgeon; Amanda McCamey – Midwife, Dr Lee Na Chong – Radiation Oncologist; Dr Hilda High – Medical Oncologist & specialist in cancer genetics; Dr Vivian Yang – Gy- naecologist & Robotics Surgeon and lastly A/Prof Payal Mukherjee – ENT Surgeon. All of these exceptionally driven women were passionate about their professions and demonstrated a range of pathways to come to medicine. As the facilitator said: ‘you can’t be who you can’t see’ and today we indeed saw who we might become.

As one of our girls stated “…every single one of them was so inspiring because they’d all done so much with their lives and were all so incredibly passionate about their fields and incredibly hard-working. It was great to meet such successful women in an area that I’m interested in and to know that it can be done and that I can do it!’

MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION

The school team has made it through to the elimination round. We are the only public school in the Upper to make it through. Our next round is now further a-field against SCEGGS Redlands at Cremorne. With the differing school holidays this round may well be extended in to Term 3. Our team have done so well to get this far and have been great ambassadors for the school at every trial. With the competitions starting at 4.00 - 4.30pm we may need some help trans- porting the students to the school. Will keep everyone posted.

YEAR 11 DEBATING

2018 has been a fantastic year for Year 11 Debating at St Ives High School. After successful debates against Turramur- ra High School and Manly Selective High School, our Year 11 team was crowned Zone 2 winners and will now progress through to the Quarter Finals against Normanhurst Boys’ High School.

Quarter Final debates in the Premier’s Debating Challenge are always ‘open’ topics, which increase the level of sophisti- cation required in preparation. Both Normanhurst Boys’ and St Ives High will receive three debating topics, which they will be required to number 1-3 in order of preference. The third choice for both teams is eliminated, with a coin toss being used if there is a tie in topics. The team who wins the coin toss decides the topic, with a further coin toss deciding the affirmative team.

Our Year 11 team, consisting of Daniel P, Hilary R, Katie F and Lily C, devote 40 minutes of their time each Friday to come together as a collec- tive to work on topics and issues with their coaches Mr Moller and Ms Abraham. The students are to be commended for their dedication to de- bating and we wish them all the best in the Quarter Finals.

THIS WEEK IN YEAR 7 TECHNOLOGY (WOODWORK)

This week in Year 7 Technology Mandatory (woodwork), the students have finished putting their pencil storage box structures together and began constructing the bases and lids. This involved the students measuring out their bases, cutting the wood on the scroll saw, gluing the bases to the side pieces and using the belt sander to create a smooth finish. For the lid, the students had a choice of coloured per- spex or wooden lids. After this, they were tasked with cutting out their lids and fitting it to shape using the belt sander or scroll saw. Rhian S.P and Tallis H are both working ahead of schedule and have already constructed their lids. Rhian mentioned “It’s going good – I have almost finished!” and Tallis remarked “I have made the lid and I’m happy because I am almost finished”. Over the next week, the students will finish constructing their bases and lids then begin decorating their projects.

KU-RING-GAI ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The Ku-ring-gai Zone Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday 13 June. Thank you to all those students who compet- ed and officiated on the day. With just meters to spare, James managed to win the race!
