A series of economic statistical profiles have been produced on each of the 6 towns in the District to illustrate their individual character and strengths. They range in size from the main urban centre of to the small town of .

Measham

Measham lies close to the borders of , and , just off the A42 – 3 miles south of Ashby de la Zouch. Now the home to a variety of large and small business, coal mining was the major source of industry for many a century, along with brick-making. The area of Measham covers 166.5 hectares, with a density of 31.3 people per hectare.

The three top sectors in terms of employment in the Measham area are Wholesale; Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles & Motor Cycles with 18.3% of total employment; followed by Manufacturing (16.7%) and Real Estate activities, Professional, scientific & technical activities; Administrative & support service activities (11,4%).

In terms of Types of Employment the 3 categories of Management and Professional, Measham saw 33% of its working population within these sectors, below the District’s 38% as a whole and significantly below the 40% for England & Wales as a whole.

Measham Built-up Area has a lower proportion of its population with Level 4 and above qualifications, compared with the District as a whole with only 1 in 5 16 – 64 year olds at this level. At the opposite end of the scale more people have no qualifications at 29% compared with 26% in the District as a whole and nationally 22.5%. These figures relate to 2011 and since then it is likely that the number of apprenticeships have risen and those with no qualifications fallen.

The rate for the local ward is slightly above for NWL District but below Great Britain’s 1.9%

Town Centre – types of businesses

In early 2017, according to an NWLDC review, there were around 30 retail and service business premises in the town centre, of which 96.7%) were independent. This is significantly higher than the national average of 67%. There are 9 (30%) retail establishments; 4 (13%) pubs/food establishments; 4 (13%) Hairdressers/Barbers/Beauty Salons; 6 (20%) Professional/Industrial and 2 (7%) vacant.

Vacancy rates

As of February 2017 there were 2 vacant town centre premises, accounting for 6.5% of the stock.

Business/Industrial Parks

The main centre of employment is centred on and around the Westminster Industrial Estate – home to a large variety of businesses, including one of British Car Auction’s sites, which brings people in from far and wide. Leicestershire County Council have a number of industrial and commercial units at Riverside Court and Huntingdon Court.

According to Zoopla, the average price paid for a property in the Measham area currently is £190,360 with the corresponding average value of £197,867. The value has increased by £988 or 0.5% in the past 12 months. These figures relate to 95 sales.

The average rent for a 2 bedroomed house is £494pcm (per calendar month) and a 3 bed house £613pcm.
