Phil not only took me to Villers, but he also taught me to look beyond the rhetoric of nationalism and sacrifice on Anzac Day as I watched him march, resplendent in uniform, along Whitehall on Anzac Day 1999. The tears I wiped away as I read of mothers’ sons like Cyril Lawrence, and for desperately loved children like Henry Colyer’s young son, paid testimony to the fact that my kids, Benjamin and Katie, helped me understand my work simply by being part of my life. And finally, thanks so much to Gaz, eternally patient, who said “make it happen”, then worked so hard to allow me to do so. He continued that “our strong connection with the Anzacs at Gallipoli has, over the years, overshadowed our commemoration” of Villers Bretonneux.1 Villers Bretonneux is harder to find in Australia’s memory of war than Gallipoli. But just as Gallipoli holds a sacred place in Australia’s war memories, Villers Bretonneux has also been imbued with meanings for Australians over the last ninety years. These meanings have changed over time and have both complemented, and jarred with, each other. In 1918, when soldiers of the Australian Imperial Force lived, fought and died around the town of Villers Bretonneux, they formed close relationships with the place and the people there. These relationships stretched out to the Australian home front, so that by war’s end, Villers Bretonneux had meanings to Australians as a place of military victory, fictive kin, and loss. In the years immediately following the war Villers Bretonneux was figuratively adopted by the city of Melbourne, allowing those Victorians 1 The Hon Alan Griffin MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Commemorative Address at the Anzac Day Dawn Service, Villers-Bretonneux, France, 25 April 2008. iv who had already formed an attachment to the area in 1918 to deepen that connection. But as memorials to Australians were constructed at Villers Bretonneux during the interwar years, the town again became a place where different battles were fought. The wartime sacrifices made by school children, and by women, jostled with an official memory which could only see the soldiers’ sacrifice. The personal relationships Australians had formed with Villers Bretonneux were overpowered by the bonds and binds of empire; the ascendancy of a soldier-centric memory evident in the Australian National Memorial, unveiled in 1938, saw Villers Bretonneux lose the resonance it had held for Australians during the 1920s.

Yet despite shared desires to honour the poilu as a symbol of the sacrifices of all French soldiers, this article argues that the appearance of consensus masks deeper tensions between memories of the First World War and the ideas and values underpinning the French Republic. During the war and the period thereafter, myths of the nation in arms served to legitimise the mobilisation and immense sacrifices of the French people. The wars of the French Revolution had establis- hed the notion of the responsibility of the French people to defend their country, creating a close connection between military service, citizenship and membership of the nation. However, these ideas were challenged by memories of the mutinies of 1917 and of the punishment of those who had disobeyed orders. Having long been excluded from official commemorations, in 2014 the French government sought to rehabilitate the memory of the soldiers shot as an exam- ple for committing acts of disobedience, espionage and criminal offences.

I begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we meet, the Ngunnawal people, and pay my respects to their elders, past and present. And, of course, I acknowledge members of the Inglis, Turner and Dunera families. Dunera Lives: A Visual History is a result of the historical project to which Professor Ken Inglis devoted the last years of a long and fruitful life as a historian. It is also the product of a great friendship between the co-authors; between Ken and Jay Winter, stretching back many decades, and between Ken, Jay and Seumas Spark, one of more recent vintage, but the bond between Ken and Seumas more like kinship than friendship in Ken’s final years. It is testament to Ken’s own gift of friendship that he was able to bring together these fine scholars to research and write Dunera Lives and, with the help of the excellent Monash University Publishing, to see it through to completion. And as explained in the general introduction, the book has benefited enormously from the continuing research of Carol Bunyan on the Dunera internees. I’m sure you will agree, one you’ve had a chance to see it and, I hope, to buy a copy, that Dunera Lives: A Visual History is a remarkably beautiful volume.     Letters from Long ‘un Captain Robert James Henderson, MC and Bar 13th Battalion AIF 1915-1918 Bob Henderson in France, winter 1917 Compiled by David Garred Jones 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This compilation arose out of a wider study into the movements, actions and stories of the “Originals” of the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion in World War 1. Part of that work involved reviewing the hundreds of diaries and thousands of letters that had been donated to the various State libraries and the Australian War Memorial. Much of this first-hand material is now available on-line, and in some cases has been transcribed by the skilled and dedicated staff of those institutions. Amongst that wealth of material are the letters of Captain Robert James Henderson, MC and Bar, of the 13th Battalion. They encapsulate the thoughts and feelings of a man who started in 1915 as a private, saw action in Gallipoli, Fleurbaix, Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Messines, Passchendaele and Villers-Bretonneux, rising through the ranks to Captain. Henderson’s family donated his letters, postcards, certificates, awards and other ephemera to the Australian War Memorial (“AWM”). They have been digitised and posted on line under the accession code AWM2016.30.1 through to AWM2016.30.9. I am deeply grateful to the AWM for making this valuable historical archive so readily accessible. As well as Henderson’s own photographs, I have included some relevant images from the AWM and other sources, all of which are acknowledged in the captions to the photos. I have also added, in italics, the locations from where each letter was written (if not already included in the original letter).

    A Critique of the Militarisation of Australian History and Culture Thesis: The Case of Anzac Battlefield Tourism Jim McKay, Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland This special issue on travel from Australia through a multidisciplinary lens is particularly apposite to the increasing popularity of Anzac battlefield tourism. Consider, for instance, the Dawn Service at Gallipoli in 2015, which will be the highlight of the commemoration of the Anzac Centenary between 2014 and 2018 (Anzac Centenary 2012). Australian battlefield tourism companies are already fully booked for this event, which is forecast to be ‘the largest peacetime gathering of Australians outside of Australia’ (Kelly 2011). Some academics have argued that rising participation in Anzac battlefield tours is symptomatic of a systemic and unrelenting militarisation of Australian history and culture. Historians Marilyn Lake, Mark McKenna and Henry Reynolds are arguably the most prominent proponents of this line of reasoning. According to McKenna: It seems impossible to deny the broader militarisation of our history and culture: the surfeit of jingoistic military histories, the increasing tendency for military displays before football grand finals, the extension of the term Anzac to encompass firefighters and sporting champions, the professionally stage-managed event of the dawn service at Anzac Cove, the burgeoning popularity of battlefield tourism (particularly Gallipoli and the Kokoda Track), the ubiquitous newspaper supplements extolling the virtues of soldiers past and present, and the tendency of the media and both main political parties to view the death of the last World War I veterans as significant national moments. (2007) In the opening passage of their book, What’s Wrong With Anzac?     10 Australian Historians Networking, 1914–1973 Geoffrey Bolton1 TheOxford English Dictionary defines networking as ‘the action or process of making use of a network of people for the exchange of information, etc., or for professional or other advantage’.2 Although recently prominent in management theory, the art of networking has been practised over many centuries in many societies, but its role in the Australian academic community has been little explored. This essay represents a preliminary excursion into the field, raising questions that more systematic researchers may follow in time, and drawing unashamedly on the resources of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
