In his remarks, Kohavi denounced US President Joe Biden’s stated intentions to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal as “bad” and said he had ordered the military to develop operational plans for striking Iran’s nuclear program. While a number of Israeli politicians — including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — have openly spoken out against Biden’s plan to rejoin the nuclear deal with Iran and threatened military action against Iran, it is highly uncommon for an IDF chief of staff to make public comments critical of an American administration, which provides significant financial and logistical support to the Israeli military. “With the changing of the administration in the United States, the Iranians have said they want to return to the previous agreement. I want to state my position, the position that I give to all my colleagues when I meet them around the world: Returning to the 2015 nuclear agreement or even to an agreement that is similar but with a few improvements is a bad thing and it is not the right thing to do,” Kohavi said. IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi speaks at the Institute for National Security Studies think tank’s annual conference on January 26, 2021. (Screen capture/INSS) It is unlikely that Kohavi would make such remarks without receiving approval from the Prime Minister’s Office. The PMO refused to comment on the matter. Gantz on Wednesday indicated that he believed Kohavi should not have made such remarks in a public speech. “A nuclear Iran is a danger to the world, to the region and is a challenge to the security of Israel. Of course Israel must be prepared to defend itself in any way, but red lines are drawn in closed rooms,” Gantz said. The defense minister made his remarks at a press conference in which he unveiled his plan to expand the country’s conscription program to include ultra-Orthodox and Arab Israelis, who are currently largely exempt from military service. Gantz was not alone in his criticism of Kohavi’s speech. Amos Gilad, a former head of Military Intelligence and former top Defense Ministry official, denounced the remarks as counterproductive. “What are we getting from this? You excoriate the administration in the United States that has barely been in its position for a week instead of having a quiet negotiation to see how to limit the damages of the deal and get some compensation for the IDF,” Gilad said, speaking to the 103FM radio station. Gilad, who criticized the Iran nuclear deal as “terrible,” said that Israel should nevertheless refrain from publicly criticizing the Biden administration in order to ensure that it can make the deal as good as possible and get commitments from the US to offset the potential damage to Israel’s national security. [Once again you have Israel’s political establishment bowing and kowtowing to the US not unlike they did 2500 years ago when they were incessantly leaning on pharaoh and other leaders than on their God. They are fearful of offending everyone because they can’t accept the fact that mankind is fundamentally weak and only God is Great and all powerful and if they love Him and follow His ways they can overcome all obstacles. It appears that the Israeli leaders are still slaves as they were in Egypt. – rdb] “If you want to have a negotiation, with all due respect, the prime minister can have a quiet negotiation with the president of the United States. Why insult and excoriate? That’s not how you lead policy,” he said. “The question isn’t what the chief of staff believes behind closed doors and what positions he takes. The moment the chief of staff says things that are so harsh, that contradict the position of the new American administration, this could be seen as defiance. This is not something that the chief of staff needs to do,” Gilad said. In addition to his criticism of the US, Kohavi also indicated he had ordered the military to prepare plans to strike the country’s nuclear program to prevent it from obtaining an atomic bomb if need be. “Iran can decide that it wants to advance to a bomb, either covertly or in a provocative way. In light of this basic analysis, I have ordered the IDF to prepare a number of operational plans, in addition to the existing ones. We are studying these plans and we will develop them over the next year,” Kohavi said. He added: “The government will of course be the one to decide if they should be used. But these plans must be on the table, in existence and trained for.” Gilad, who retired in 2017, said that he believed this to be “just words,” as it was highly unlikely that Israel would conduct such a strike without a green light from Washington. “You think you would carry out a strike without strategic cooperation with the United States? It will never, ever happen,” he said. Israel has twice conducted military strikes against the nuclear programs of its enemies — Iraq in 1981 and Syria in 2007 — under what’s become known as the Begin Doctrine, which maintains that Jerusalem will not allow an enemy country to obtain an atomic weapon. https://www.timesofisrael.com/gantz-appears-to-rebuke-idf-chief-over-public-criticism-of-us- threat-to-iran/ When you stop believing in an almighty, all powerful Miracle working God you have lost your strength and advantage. – rdb] Joint List appears to dissolve alliance as talks between Arab parties founder ‘We’ve failed,’ says Balad MK Mtanes Shahadeh, after four-way meeting fails to bring unity; parties will likely not run as one bloc, although decision not final By Aaron Boxerman Today, 9:51 pm Representatives of three of the four Arab parties which compose the Joint List said on Wednesday night that negotiations to maintain the unity of the bloc have failed, making it likely that they will not run together in the coming March elections. “We’ve failed, unfortunately. The Joint List will not continue in its current lineup,” said Balad MK Mtanes Shehadeh, adding later: “At this point, we cannot continue as the Joint List because of our fundamental political differences.” Hadash party secretary Mansour Dahamsheh, who participated in the talks on Wednesday night, said that “there will be no Joint List with four parties.

  • Israel's Arab Minority and the Second 2019 Elections: Outcomes and Discourse on Political Participation September 25, 2019
Inter-Agency Task Force on Israeli Arab Issues Israel’s Arab Minority and the Second 2019 Elections: Outcomes and Discourse on Political Participation September 25, 2019 Israel’s second national elections of 2019 drew 10% more Arab voters than the April elections, earning the Joint List 13 seats (up from 10) and making it once again the third largest party in the Knesset. In contrast to 2015, when the Joint List first formed and also won 13 seats, the highly polarized campaign cycles along with the lack of decisive results in both 2019 races have contributed to rapidly changing discourse about Arab political participation in national government, both within Arab society and in the Israeli mainstream. In recent years, Arab citizens have increasingly indicated greater interest in real influence in national government, as well as frustration about sensing a lack of efficacy in voting. After historically low Arab voter turnout of 49.2% in April, September’s higher turnout of 59.2% is attributed to a number of factors: the reunification of the Joint List, statements by Joint List Chair MK Ayman Odeh about his willingness to be part of a ruling coalition, get-out-the-vote efforts, and the backlash against negative campaigning and voter suppression efforts by Likud. Following election results, the Joint List is continuing to take a lead in advancing a discourse of greater participation. With a lack of clear path to a governing coalition, the party formally recommended MK Benny Gantz, Chair of Kahol Lavan, as Prime Minister, a move seen by many as “crossing the Rubicon” in terms of Arab leadership’s willingness to become a full player in Israeli politics.

  • Israeli Reactions to the Abraham Peace Accords with the UAE and Bahrain
Israeli Reactions to the Abraham Peace Accords with the UAE and Bahrain Updated October 6, 2020 On September 15, 2020, leaders of Israel, the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain signed The Abraham Accords, witnessed by the United States’ President Trump, on the White House lawn. The reaction across different segments of Israeli society to the new treaties has varied widely. General Israeli Population As a whole, Israelis greeted the Accords with satisfaction and even celebration. Newspapers featured banner headlines, television news carried ongoing, extended broadcasts, and social media was full of stories of Israelis searching for resorts, flights, shopping and vacations in Dubai. The Israel Democracy Institute carried out a poll through the Midgam Institute between August 31 and September 2, just after the deal was announced. Large majorities of those polled said that they thought the agreement would benefit Israel across a variety of fields, including economic (79%), “political-diplomatic” (76%) and in terms of tourism (76%). A smaller majority of 53% thought the deal would contribute to Israel’s national security as well. Yet, Israel today is deeply divided along partisan lines. Similar to the current situation in the United States, almost every issue in the Jewish state is today viewed through a political lens, and the new peace agreements are no exception. When Israelis see their Prime Minister on the White House lawn (alongside President Trump, another divisive figure), it is difficult for many to separate the act from the players, and there can be little doubt that politics cloud the perception of the Accords for many.
