COI Barcoding of Plant Bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Miridae)
COI barcoding of plant bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Miridae) Junggon Kim and Sunghoon Jung Laboratory of Systematic Entomology, Department of Applied Biology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Chungnam National University, Daejeon, Korea ABSTRACT The family Miridae is the most diverse and one of the most economically important groups in Heteroptera. However, identification of mirid species on the basis of morphology is difficult and time-consuming. In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of COI barcoding for 123 species of plant bugs in seven subfamilies. With the exception of three Apolygus species—A. lucorum, A. spinolae, and A. watajii (sub- family Mirinae)—each of the investigated species possessed a unique COI sequence. The average minimum interspecific genetic distance of congeners was approximately 37 times higher than the average maximum intraspecific genetic distance, indicating a significant barcoding gap. Despite having distinct morphological characters, A. lu- corum, A. spinolae, and A. watajii mixed and clustered together, suggesting taxonomic revision. Our findings indicate that COI barcoding represents a valuable identification tool for Miridae and can be economically viable in a variety of scientific research fields. Abstract The paper starts a series of works on the structure of the ectodermal part of the male genital apparatus in Miridae and is based on the investigation of nearly two hundred species of Miridae, belonging to 31 tribes from all subfamilies. A general review of the structure and functioning of the main genitalia elements in various groups of Miridae is given. A list of terms used by previous researchers for different homologous structures is presented and an attempt to stabilize this tenninology is made. Detailed description of genitalia structure in subfamilies Isometopinae and Psallopinae is given. Characters, valuable for the recognition of monophyletic taxonomical groupings are discussed. Keywords: Miridae, Isometopinae, Psallopinae, genitalia, morphology, systematics. Introduction The structure of external genitalia is widely used in the taxonomy ofMiridae. A number of high ranked groups, e. g. subfamily Phylinae or tribe Halticini, can be clearly defined only on the base of genitalia structure (ScHUH, 1974, 1984, 1995). Phylogenetic relationships of Dicyphini and Pilophorini were revealed only after this set of data was taken into consideration (WAGNER, 1955; ScHUH, 1974, 1976, 1995). Nevertheless, the structure of genitalia is still used mainly for differentiation of closely related species. Morphological works on genitalia of Miridae are scarce and usually based on taxa common in the Northern Hemisphere. -
The Miridae (Hemiptera : Heteroptera) Associated with Noble
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Gary Michael Cooper for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology presented in January 1981 Title: The Miridae (Hemiptera:Heteroptera) Associated with Noble Fir, Abies procera Rehd. Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: /- Dr. John D. Lattin The Miridae, or plant bugs, associated with noble fir, Abies procera Rehd., are discussed. Thirty six species of the Miridae were collected from noble fir. Twenty five of these species are considered only "visitors" to noble fir. The study does not deal with these species. Noble fir is a host of the eleven other species: Deraeocoris incertus Knight, Deraeocoris piceicola Knight, Dichrooscytus sp. A, Orthotylus sp. A, Paradacerla formicina (Parshley), Phytocoris neglectus Knight, Phytocoris sp. A, Pinalitus solivagus (Van Duzee), Plagiognathus sp. A and Psallus spp. A and B. Fifth instar larvae and the adults of these eleven species were examined and described. The plant bugs were collected from the noble fir foliage every seven to fourteen days from early May to mid-October,1979 from Marys Peak in the Oregon Coast Range and the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Distributional data were added from collecting trips in Oregon on Grass Mountain and around Mt. Hood and in Washington state at White Pass and Stevens Pass. The larvae and adults of the eleven noble fir mirid species were observed in a growth chamber. Feeding observations were recorded for eight species. The larvae and adults were examined for external signs of insect parasitism. Sticky traps placed on the boles of noble fir trees on Marys Peak collected very few mirids, suggestingthat the mirids remain on the foliage and branches. -
Miridae (Heteroptera) New to Canada, with Some Taxonomic Changes

SCUDDER Department of Zoology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada V6T 1Z4 Abstract.-This paper records 75 species of plant bugs new to Canada, including the first report of Pinalitus cervinus (Herrich-Schaeffer) in North America. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Melanotrachus vestitus (Uhler), lectotype designated and new combina- tion; Macrotyloides symetricus Knight, new junior synonym of Macrotylus vestitus Uhler; and Paraproba nigrinervis Van Duzee, 1917, new junior synonym of Paraproba cincta Van Duzee, 1917. Rt'sum.-UL'auteur rapporte pour la premiere fois la presence de 75 especes de punaises au Canada dont une espece introduite, Pinalitus cervinus (Herrich-Schaeffer), mentionnee pour la premiere fois d'Amerique du Nord. On propose 6galement les modifications taxonomiques suivantes: Melanotrichus vestitus (Uhler) est une nouvelle combinaison et un lectotype lui est designe; Macrotyloides symetricus Knight est un nouveau synonyme plus recent de Macrotylus vesuitus Uhler; et Paraproba nigrinervis Van Duzee, 1917, est un nouveau synonyme plus recent de Paraproba cincta Van Duzee, 1917. In systematic studies associated with a monograph on the plant bugs of British Columbia (Schwartz and Scudder, in prep.), we have discovered 75 species new to Canada, including the first record of Pinalitus cervinus (Herrich-Schaeffer) to North America. These locality records are published at this time to validate their inclusion in the Hemiptera of Canada and Alaska (Maw et al., 2000). Several new taxonomic changes are also reported as a result of these works. -

EYLES, Entomology Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Nelson New Zealand (Received for publication, 2 November 1971) Summary A list of the 21 genera and 62 species of Isometopidae, and notes on the zoogeography and habitat of the group, are given. INTRODUCTION The Isometopidae or jumping tree bugs are closely allied to the Miridae, having a cuneus which is declivous with the membrane, but differing in the presence of ocelli, the lygaeid-like antennae (segments III and IV not narrower than a normal first segment), and in some genera by the enor mous eyes which may occupy almost the entire head. Often the hind femora are saltatorial. The tarsi may have two or three tarsomeres. The relative scarcity of species is no doubt a reflection of the jumping habit (combined with small size, 1-5-2-8 mm) and lack of knowledge of their habitat. Most species were described from one to four specimens, with a large proportion, at least 48 %, described from single specimens. Heidemann (1907) highlights the elusiveness of these species when he records that in spite of close searching during the summers, a species described in 1891 was not collected again until 1902 (one specimen resting on the bark of a maple) and not again until 1907 (when a nymph and adults were taken on a tree). Contributions to the habitat of the family are: in wooded district (Uhler, 1891); in damp and shady places on the twigs of dead trees (Heidemann, 1907); under bark of native fig (Kirkaldy, 1908); on an orange tree (McAtee & Malloch, 1924); predacious upon the red scale of citrus (Hesse, 1947); on bark of Albizzia stipulata (Carvalho, 1951); in forest under low plants and shrubs (Hoberlandt, 1952); and at light (Hoberlandt, 1952; Carvalho & Fonseca Rosas, 1962). -
