The 'new' art history is no longer new, and that widely used and useful label has come to seem dangerously over-tidy. Re visions responds to the arrival of new ways of thinking in art history in a series of lucid and accessible studies by authors distinguished in their fields. THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART CELEBRATES THE OPENING OF MoMA QNS ITS NEW HOME IN LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS, WITH FIVE INAUGURAL EXHIBITIONS NEW YORK, JULY 2002––On June 29, 2002, The Museum of Modern Art celebrated the grand opening of MoMA QNS, its new Museum in Long Island City, Queens. Michael Maltzan Architecture (Los Angeles) and Scott Newman of Cooper, Robertson & Partners (New York) have radically transformed the former Swingline staple factory building into a sleek and elegant showcase for modern and contemporary art. The intense blue stucco exterior recalls the original bright blue brick of the Swingline factory. The space encompasses 160,000 square feet, with 25,000 square feet of exhibition space, as well as a café and store; conservation laboratory; library and public reading room; collections, imaging, and framing facilities; offices; and storage space. MoMA QNS will present a dynamic program of exhibitions while construction is under way at the Museum’s midtown Manhattan site. It will serve as a permanent home for storage of MoMA’s collection, as well as a facility for conservation, study, and research. MoMA QNS joins a growing list of cultural destinations, galleries, and artists who have discovered the vibrant community that characterizes Long Island City, located in New York City’s Borough of Queens, just across the East River from Manhattan. The new Museum of Modern Art, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, is scheduled to open in 2005 in midtown Manhattan. The Opening Celebrations To celebrate the opening of MoMA QNS, the Museum commissioned several contemporary artists to create new works.

  • Long Island City
The Greater Astoria Historical Society’s LONG ISLAND CITY Coat of Arms, 1873 TEACHER’S GUIDE OVERVIEW Long Island City is the western most part of Queens County. It is comprised of the neighborhoods of Astoria, Steinway, Ravenswood, Hunters Point, Dutch Kills, and Sunnyside. The people living there either work just minutes from Manhattan or enjoy a short commute. Although their occupa- tions, types of housing, means of transportation and recreations would change over time, their pride in their neighborhood remained constant. In the beginning, the coast of western Queens was a landscape of rocky shores and swamps left by the last ice age. Native Americans occupied the land and left behind shell heaps as evidence and had summer camps on Newtown Creek, Pot Cove and Bowery Bay. Most of the history of the area we know began with the founding along the East River in the 17th century of a plantation by William Hallett. In 1839, the village of Astoria was founded by Stephen Halsey. By the mid- dle of the 19th century, there was a small settlement at Hunters Point at the southern tip of Long Island City. At the same time, magnificent estates sprang up along the East River in Ravenswood. But the entire area that was to become Long Island City was still a suburban setting, just across the East River from Manhattan. All of that began to change in 1861, when the Long Island Railroad constructed rail lines to a terminal at Hunters Point, where passengers could be ferried across the river to Manhattan. All sorts of support services sprang up, and the industrialization and growth of the Hunters Point area became possible.
