STOCKS TO WATCH Investors decide there may be plenty of profit in Lehman Brothers yet ’re list ing The best way to describe Lehman e en Brothers’ recent stock performance Hello, w is strictly subprime. Two weeks ago, the shares plummeted 8% on fears of big losses from Lehman’s exposure to the cratering subprime mortgage market. Last week, those fears eased a bit, and Lehman’s shares bounced back by 5%. This week, the firm is expected to report strong earnings, but investors will be watching anxiously for any sign of problems. In recent years, few stocks have consistently dressed up investors’ portfolios as well as Phillips-Van Heusen. Shares of the maker of dress shirts tacked on another 5% last week and are up 67% over the last year. In recent weeks, the company has stoked its engine for future growth by acquiring a neckwear maker for $180 million, and by signing on to make apparel bearing the Timberland name beginning next year. Maidenform’s cups runneth over. Last week, the bra and underwear maker, whose shares have more than doubled in the last 12 months, announced an uplifting set of results. The company announced 2006 profits of $28 million, a sharp departure from 2005’s $8 million loss. Even better, Maidenform projected that the momentum would continue, with profits expected to soar 18% this year. charts: lindström bekka

GOTHAM GIGS A dog’s life JAMES PHILLIPS, 33, has walked dogs professionally for four years. His business, King Pup, has 12 to 15 clients—all in downtown Manhattan— and Mr. Phillips generally walks two to three dogs at a time. Charging $20 for 45 minutes per dog, Mr. Phillips brings in about $1,800 a week. RUFF HOURS Like many in the business of providing services for companion animals, Mr. Phillips took up dog-walking and pet-sitting as a temporary gig. But over time, he built up a client base and became attached to the animals, despite the demands. “I work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and never take days off,” he says. DOGGONE SUBWAYS The job takes a physical toll, too. During the 2005 transit strike, Mr. Phillips had to walk more than 30 miles a day to reach pets in different neighborhoods. He says he limped for three months afterward. PAWS-ON CARE His charges are not always well-behaved. “There are dogs that want to pee on everything, like the steps of restaurants, and owners who refuse to train them,” Mr. Phillips says. “You CONTENT DINK: “Once you get need a lot of patience.” married, that —whitney west question of when you’re going to have children is always EXPERT OPINIONS next,” says publicist ST.
