O'Brienl ABSTRACT Papers dealing with distribution, faunal extensions, and identification of Michigan insects and other terrestrial arthropods are listed by order, and cover the period of 1878 through 1982. The following bibliography lists the publications dealing with the distribution or identification of insects and other terrestrial arthropods occurring in the State of Michigan. Papers dealing only with biological, behavioral, or economic aspects are not included. The entries are grouped by orders, which are arranged alphabetically, rather than phylogenetic ally , to facilitate information retrieval. The intent of this paper is to provide a ready reference to works on the Michigan fauna, although some of the papers cited will be useful for other states in the Great Lakes region. -

Janzen, December 23, 2007 (sent for review November 16, 2007) DNA barcodes can be used to identify cryptic species of skipper butterflies previously detected by classic taxonomic methods and to provide first clues to the existence of yet other cryptic species. A striking case is the common geographically and ecologically widespread neotropical skipper butterfly Perichares philetes (Lep- idoptera, Hesperiidae), described in 1775, which barcoding splits into a complex of four species in Area de Conservacio´ n Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. Three of the species are new, and all four are described. Caterpillars, pupae, and foodplants offer better distinguishing characters than do adults, whose differences are mostly average, subtle, and blurred by intraspecific variation. The caterpillars of two species are generalist grass-eaters; of the other two, specialist palm-eaters, each of which feeds on different genera. But all of these cryptic species are more specialized in their diet than was the morphospecies that held them. The four ACG taxa discovered to date belong to a panneotropical complex of at least eight species. This complex likely includes still more species, whose exposure may require barcoding. -

China Abstract In the recent worldwide campaign for the global biodiversity inventory via DNA barcoding, a simple and easily used measure of confidence for assigning sequences to species in DNA barcoding has not been established so far, although the likelihood ratio test and the Bayesian approach had been proposed to address this issue from a statistical point of view. The TDR (Two Dimensional non-parametric Resampling) measure newly proposed in this study offers users a simple and easy approach to evaluate the confidence of species membership in DNA barcoding projects. We assessed the validity and robustness of the TDR approach using datasets simulated under coalescent models, and an empirical dataset, and found that TDR measure is very robust in assessing species membership of DNA barcoding. In contrast to the likelihood ratio test and Bayesian approach, the TDR method stands out due to simplicity in both concepts and calculations, with little in the way of restrictive population genetic assumptions. To implement this approach we have developed a computer program package (TDR1.0beta) freely available from ftp://202.204.209.200/education/video/TDR1.0beta.rar. As this is our second volume, you’ll find several score new or converted monsters, as well as a few different interpretations of monsters that have already been converted. A word of caution, just as many official 3E and 3.5E monsters did not slavishly follow earlier write-ups of those monsters, neither do the monsters herein. Instead, we did our best to consider all sources, hopefully make full and creative use of the 3.5E rules (including non-core WotC books), and in many cases add a little bit here and there to many of the monsters, even if it was in only adding or updating their Realms lore. A few have even been renamed. One last note, we’ve done our best to include source references for all things where appropriate, except those found in the three core rulebooks or Expanded Psionics Handbook. Annotated Checklist of the Butterflies of Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State
AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: RHOPALOCERA) OF BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE STATE VALLEY PARK AND VICINITY JUNE, 1974 Published by TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE VALLEY STATE PARK P.O. 30X 988; MISSION, TEXAS 78572 INTRODUCTION The species listed here in are primarily a result of the collecting by the authors during the period 1972-1973. Certain important records of the previous several years are also included. Additionally, the checklist incorporates records of a number of other lepidopterists. The primary focus of the checklist, then, is upon recent collecting, rather than being an attempt to list all known records from the Mid-Valley area. All lepidopterists collecting in the park and vicinity are urged to send copies of their records to the authors and/or the park authorities. A number of species on the list have been taken in Hidalgo Co. but not yet within the actual confines of the park; the annotations will indicate which species these are. Some of these have been taken at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, approximately thirty miles down river, in habitats similar to those within the park. Others have been taken within several miles of the park, in nearby towns and along roadsides. These species can be reasonably expected to occur in the park, and their inclusion upon this list should alert the collector to their possible presence. The annotations have been kept necessarily brief. They are intended to aid the visiting lepidopterist in evaluating the significance of his catches. Local larval food plants are given where known. Much, however, is still to be learned regarding the life histories of even some of the commoner species. -

Vane-Wright British Museum (Natural History), London This paper deals with the type material of butterflies belonging to the S. American genus Prepona Boisduval, described by Eugene Le Moult in his work Etudes sur les Prepona (1932). Le Moult was an insect dealer somewhat infamous in entomological circles; for present purposes it will suffice to say that he published most of his work privately, many of his taxonomic conclusions were unsound, and he was a "splitter", subdividing many previously accepted species on little evidence. He was also inclined to describe very minor variations as aberrations or other infrasubspecific categories. Reference to his type material is usually essential when revisional work is undertaken on the groups he touched upon. Le Moult's Prepona 'Etude' was never completed; that part which was published appeared after 'Seitz', and there is undoubtedly much synonymy to unravel. It is hoped that the present work will be of assistance to those studying this genus in the future. The bulk of Le Moult's very extensive Lepidoptera collection which remained after his death was disposed by auction in some 1100 lots, on 5th-7th February 1968, by Mes. Hoebanx and Lemaire at the Hotel Drouot, Paris (sale catalogue, Hoebanx & Lemaire, 1967). The greater part of Le Moult's Prepona types were still in his collection at that time and were included in lots 405-500. Most of the types in this sale material of Prepona are now housed in the British Museum 1- (Natural History). -

Its nearest neighbors are Anguilla, about 80 statute miles (127 km} across the Anegada Passage to the east-southeast and Virgin Gorda, about 13 miles (21 km} due south. Whereas the Virgin Islands are generally mountainous, Anegada reaches perhaps 18 ' above mean sea level and much of the island is considerably lower (D 'Arcy, 1975}. It is about 10 miles (16 km} in length, about 15 square miles (39 km'} in area, oriented along the east-west axis and is just over 2 miles (3.5 km} across the widest point (Fig. 16}. From the south coast and into the Anegada Passage to the southeast extends the Horseshoe Reef, long a hazard to navigation. -

The external structure of the integument of Dynamine postverta postverta (Cramer, 1779) is based on detailed morphological drawings and scanning electron microscopy.
