Tough rules to fight school absenteeism DOHA: Taking a serious view of absentee- ism in Independent Schools, the Minister of Education and Higher Education and Chairman of the Supreme Education Council H E Dr Mohammed bin Abdul Wahid bin Ali Al Hammadi yesterday issued decision No. 23 of 2014, barring erring students from taking continuous assessment tests and term examinations. The decision applies to students from grades 4 to 12 and extensive rules to help implement it will be framed by the SEC, a statement by the council said. According to it, starting from this school year a student will be prevented from taking the first assessment test for all subjects if he or she is absent from the school for seven (school) days in a row without any accept- able reason. Similarly, if he or she is absent for 10 days consecutively (without any acceptable rea- son), the student will be barred from taking the second assessment test for all subjects. If the absence exceeds 13 days uninter- ruptedly and without any justifiable reason, the student will not be allowed to take the third assessment test (for all subjects). ISLAMABAD: Leaders of Pakistan protests demand- ing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation pressed on with talks with the gov- ernment yesterday, reviving hopes for a political solution to a crisis that has destabilised the coup-prone nation. Anti-government protests turned deadly last weekend, with thousands trying to storm Sharif’s house, in an outburst of violence which has prompted fears that the country’s power- ful army might intervene and even topple Sharif. But yesterday, the protest site was almost empty, with just a few hundred people huddling in torrential rain. After weeks of deadlock, protest leaders Imran Khan, a former cricket star, and Tahir ul-Qadri, a firebrand Sufi cleric, are in talks with govern- ment officials to find a political solution. Negotiations revolve around six demands that Khan has made, including that the prime minister step down, fresh elec- tions be held and electoral Supporters gesture during a speech delivered by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan (not in the picture) reforms carried out. as part of an anti-government protest near the prime minister’s residence in Islamabad. “We are talking with the pro- testers but their motives are plain for all to see,” Sharif told protest leaders remained ada- military coups rather than again but even if Sharif survives, parliament. mant on their key demand. elections. he would emerge significantly Qadri and Khan have taken “The government has Some ruling party officials weakened and likely play second- an inflexible stand on their accepted five out of six demands have accused the military of fiddle to the army on key secu- demand that Sharif quit, and it ...and the sixth is just unreason- instigating the unrest as a way rity and foreign policy issues. was unclear what kind of solu- able and nonnegotiable,” said of unsettling Sharif and exerting The crisis has taken many tion would suit all the parties. ruling party minister Ahsan supremacy over him. turns since protests broke out in But Islamabad was full of Iqbal, referring to the demand The army has denied it was mid-August, subsiding at times speculation yesterday that the that Sharif resign. meddling in civilian affairs, say- only to flare up again in violence, opposition might drop their Violence in the usually quiet ing it was neutral and calling for with most commentators saying demand for his resignation and capital has alarmed many peo- a political resolution. it was too early to say whether a agree to end their anti-govern- ple in a nation where power has Few commentators think the negotiated solution was in sight. ment campaign.
