Tyldesley Football Club The first rugby club in Tyldesley was formed in 1881.

There are two items of interest to note during this first period of playing under RFU rules, In 1891 Tyldesley signed future England Internaonal Half-back John "Buff" Berry from Kendal Hornets. He went on to win caps for England (RU) while at Tyldesley in 1891 against Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. He connued playing for Tyldesley under the Northern Union rules (Rugby League) as a stand-off half. Tyldesley beat Widnes to win the 1895 Lancashire (Rugby Union) Cup at Wilderspool Stadium, Warrington in front of around 15,000 spectators.

Prior to the Union v League Schism, Tyldesley, like many other clubs from Lancashire (and Yorkshire), had suffered punishment by the RFUfor "broken me" payments. And so Tyldesley aended a meeng at The George Hotel, Huddersfield, together with representaves of 21 other clubs, and agreed to form a Northern Rugby Football Union. Aer the Great Schism in 1895, Tyldesley were one of the founder members of the new league. In the first season 1895-96 the league consisted of 22 clubs and Tyldesley finished in a very creditable 6th posion. In season 1896-97 the league was divided into Yorkshire and Lancashire, Tyldesley playing in the laer secon, where they would stay for the remainder of their (semi) professional existence. They again had a quite successful season finishing in 3rd posion out of 14 teams. In the two following seasons, sll in the Lancashire secon, season 1897-98 & 1898-99 they could only manage a lowly 12th posion (out of 14 teams). In the final season, 1899-00 they won the wooden spoon, finishing 14th out of 14 teams, with only five points thanks to two wins and one draw. For the 1901–02 season they dropped down to the lower divisions. In 1911 they become the first club to successfully return to the Rugby Union code aer playing Northern Union. They cite as the reason that the "costs prove too much of a burden in the "Professional" game".

Hello again! We were expecng a quiet summer this year but events have conspired against us on two fronts but, nevertheless, we have hopefully managed to produce pitches of a sasfactory quality.

The first setback is the delay to the clubhouse development – with new pitches planned there was lile point spending me and money doing our usual close – season work of reseeding, top – dressing and ferliser. This meant we were too late to do anything but spread ferliser.

The second issue we had to deal with caused a lot of extra work and thanks must go to all the tractor The insidious lile worm—nematodus celca boys who laboured long and hard to overcome a nematode aack which killed large patches of Assistant Groundsman “Coburn” points out the damage caused by grass on Pitch 1. We had to scarify off the dead virulent “nematodus celca” grass then use a topsoil / seed mix to top-dress. This took 3 days work but thankfully most areas are recovering.

We called in an agronomist to assess the problem and the cause allegedly was an especially aggressive species called “nematodus celca.” Join the “Tractor Boys” for a couple of hours work on the grounds, a bit of fun and a hearty breakfast each Thursday morning at about 9.30 Contact Taffy Jones on: 07758 800580
