Introduction At present industrial enterprises are surrounded by ever growing technogenic anomalies – plots with higher contents of lead, copper, zinc, and other elements, exceeding significantly natural background. Disclosing of such technogenic anomalies is one of most important geoecological tasks of city environment evaluation. Snow cover monitoring is one of the methods of defining ranges of such anomalies. In this sense, snow cover is a reliable indicator of pollution for it concentrates the whole volume of winter precipitation. The amount of toxic materials left in a city after snow has melt is represented by a complex of substances in snow cover and carried away by thaw waters. -

ISBN 91-506-1756-7 Lower-Middle Ordovician (Arenig) successions in the East Baltic have been investigated for more than one hundred and fifty years. Nevertheless detailed sampling still yields new species and better knowledge of the environment in which these organisms lived. The successions are well suited for bed by bed sampling because of the lack of tectonic disturbance and because the sequences are well documented. This study analyses collections of Billingen-Volkhov age mainly from the St. Petersburg region, but also from Estonia. A great deal of the material was obtained from the marly to clayey, soft sediment that intercalates the compact packstones and wackestones in the succession. Twenty-nine of these clay horizons were used for diversity estimates on the fauna through the succession. The most thoroughly investigated groups for this investigation were rhynchonelliformean brachiopods, conodonts and ostracodes. The results indicate that variances in diversity and abundance levels for these groups were not correlated, either to each other or to the small-scale sea level fluctuations that have been suggested for the region. However, diversity dynamics of brachiopods and ostracodes confirm the large-scale upward shallowing of the basin into the Upper Volkhov. -

The main purpose of the project was to supply the Haanpaa Group with basic marketing information regarding potential customers, competitors and infrastructural development in the City of St. Petersburg. The point of view of the research was that of logistics. The topic was divided into three distinct parts which together form a balanced review of the research subject. The main objectives of the project were to identify potential customers, existing competitors and ongoing or forthcoming development projects of the St. Petersburg transport and logistics infrastructure. The search for potential customers included collecting data from Russian corporate websites and business portals. A number of Russian companies were also approached by e-mail to request additional information. Competitors were identified by collecting data online as well as by relating to recent literate sources. -

Chernykh Institute of Limnology, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia (Accepted for publication January 25, 2000) Abstract The Volkhov Bay, the largest estuary bay of Ladoga Lake, is characterized. It is shown that owing to special hydrophysical conditions (higher water temperature during ise-free period, low water transparency, and intensive sediments transport) the ecological state of the bay differs considerably from that of other coastal parts of the lake. With respect to economical importance, the catchment area of the Volkhov Bay, is the most developed territory of the Ladoga basin. As a result of increasing nutrient load, eutrophication processes in the bay are obvious. The effect of the waste waters of industrial enterprises favours additional deterioration of water quality in the southern part of the Ladoga Lake. The article considers the possibilities to improve the use of devastated territories of the Russian Federation, particularly of the Northwest Federal District and the Leningrad Oblast. The work provides data on monitoring the formation, usage and disposal of waste and outlines the range of environmental problems occurring due to exploitation of devastated territories. Measures of optimizing these territories, prospects for their implementation and related risks that may entail economic losses for urban development were determined in the article. This work reveals the important role of geoecological factors played in addressing the issues of preparing such areas for further building development. The study of characteristics and classification of devastated lands is of great importance for the rational planning of urban space. Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE Adrian Selin1, Kuzma Kukushkin2, Ivan Sablin3, Elena Kocheryagina4 REGIMES OF THE RUSSIAN–SWEDISH BORDER IN THE NOVGOROD LANDS5 The working paper analysed the infrastructure of the Russian-Swedish border from a transcultural perspective. The history of the border was split into three periods following major changes in political border regimes. The first period covered the history of the border between Sweden and the Novgorod Republic after its formal delimitation in 1323. The annexation of the Novgorod Lands to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1478 marked the beginning of the second period. The third period, which is discussed in detail, covered the history of border infrastructure between the transition of large part of the Novgorod Lands to Sweden in 1617 and 1700. Departing from the debate whether the border was a line or a zone and overcoming state-centred approaches, the working paper demonstrated that the existence of several parallel border regimes during different periods enabled the simultaneous existence of the border as a line and a zone pertaining to different social interactions and subject to manipulation by authorities. The consolidation of the border did not follow the Treaty of Stolbovo (1617), but owed to local demands and an accidental event of an epidemic in 1629– 1630. -

D., Tikhonova M. A., 2019 The Northwestern Federal District is a Russian macro-region that is a unique example of a model region. It accounts for 10 % of the country’s total area and 9.5 % of its population. This article aims to trace the patterns of city distribution across the region, to assess the conditions of differently populated cities and towns, and to identify sustainability trends in their socio-economic development. Population change is a reliable indicator of the competitiveness of a city. As a rule, a growing city performs well economically and has a favourable investment climate and high-paid jobs. The analysis revealed that population change occurred at different rates across the federal district in 2002—2017. A result of uneven socio-economic development, this irregularity became more serious as globalisation and open market advanced. The study links the causes and features of growth-related differences to the administrative status, location, and economic specialisation of northwestern cities. The migration behaviour of the population and the geoeconomic position are shown to be the main indicators of the sustainable development of a city.
