INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

―All extremes of feeling are allied with madness.‖

― Virginia Woolf, Orlando

This word created by Virginia Woolf from her novel ―‖Orlando” in 2000 to tell us that love and obsession when a relationship is rejected or ended, is a very dangerous step people take without realizing it. Sometimes love is not a something beautiful. love usually occurs in a healthy and unhealthy love which tend to obsessive love. Healthy love tends to mature over the years to include commitment, , and a solid respect for the other person as an individual and of their needs. While obsessive love is that with the latter, those feelings of infatuation become extreme, expanding to the point of becoming obsessions.

Obsessive love disorder is start with word ―obsessive‖. Obsessive is defined as a person who has excessive thoughts or actions, persistent urges, intrusive mental images, or an unwanted emotional pull. Individuals who suffer from obsessive love disorder having a mental condition in which a person consistently show their action without care what other people like or not in their attitude. They often violate the law, becoming criminals. They may lie and behave violently. Therefore, people with this disorder typically tend to manipulate or treat others harshly. They show no guilt or remorse for their behaviour.

1

Universitas Sumatera Utara Obsessive love can be differentiated from a healthy love by having addictive qualities. The person who suffers from obsessive love tends to want to spend excessive time with their love object, such that they think excessively about and engage in behaviors that put them in touch with their love object to an extreme degree. They may limit how much they engage in recreational activities or other social relationships, even becoming incapacitated to the point of being unable to work.

A person who obsessively loves may engage in escalating tools of psychological control, or other forms of control, in an effort to keep their love object close that include controlling money or food and in extreme cases, stalking or using violence. The individual who is obsessively in love, as well as the object of that love, may be dependent and codependent on each other, respectively. The person who loves obsessively may behave as if addicted to their love object. In turn, the object of obsessive love may have difficulty setting clear limits and boundaries on the obsessive love disorder.

Basically, obsessive love disorder is the type of mental disorder. Obsessive love disorder is an extreme form of love that transcends into an obsession over time. It is characterized by an unhealthy attachment towards someone and can be triggered off by many factors. Obsessive love disorder has its foundation in the insatiable fixation of wanting to possess the target of their obsession. The emotions that are experienced when in love, like mutual respect, , and security, are overtaken by feelings of jealousy, insecurity, and resentment.

(Bogerts, 2005)

2

Universitas Sumatera Utara There is no one born in obsessive love disorder, because obsessive love disorder often causes by low self-esteem, abuse, neglect and ego. The people who suffer obsessive love disorder usually can‗t control and express their anger and their aggravation, easy to get angry and threaten when they faced unsafe condition for them and they tend to use a threat, an aggression and verbal violence.

Literature is identical with the words: the expression of human feeling, imaginative process and creativity (Wellek, 1972:2). Literature is a written work and exists in our society as a communicative means in our ideas of literature to show and give such a greater understanding about this life. Taylor (1981: 1) says that literature, like other parts, is essentially an imaginative act, that is, and act of the writers imaginations is selecting, ordering, and interpreting life-experience‘. It means that literature is an interpretation of human‘s mind that uses language as medium. It has a large scope and fantastic. In literature, there are three branches of literature such as drama, poetry, and prose. Meanwhile, prose can also be divided into novel, short story, , etc.

Novel is one of literary works that are part of prose. Novel is a fictional prose narrative of considerable length, typically having a plot that is unfolded by the actions, speech, and thoughts of the characters. Novel contains some aspects that reflected based on the human real life. This aspects commonly concern with feeling, emotion, conflicts, problem, etc. the elements that build up novel are plot, characters, theme, setting, point of view, and language style. One of the most important elements of novel is characters. Talking about the characters of a

3

Universitas Sumatera Utara literary work means talking about their quality of mind, behaviors, or personalities. In this thesis, the writer wants to analyze about the characteristic of obsessive love disorder on the leading character and also the effect based on the novel.

In this case, the writer tends to take the definition of character from Robert

Stanton to support this analysis. Stanton (1965:33) said that actually character in term of literature consist two understanding. First, character is human or maybe non-human, and the second, character refers to the moral qualities of the human or non-human in fiction including its attitude, emotion, and characteristic.

Leading character is the centered individual very dominant. As an individual, the leading focused personality. Leading character emerged as long side the extraordinary character, a character that might be called prototypical.

The prototypical character is not a stereotypical but a fully rounded, three dimensional character.

Just like Joseph ―Joe‖, the leading character of Caroline Kepnes‗ novel

You. Joe is willing to do anything for the woman he loves — even commit murder. Joe is obsessed with the beautiful Guinevere Beck from the time he first sees her in the bookstore where he works. Caroline Kepnes will show us how the obsessive love disorder works. Caroline show how Joe is obsessed with Beck when she first walks into his bookstore. He uses her name to research her online and find where she lives. He spends his days watching her through the windows of her apartment. He believes she is his future.

4

Universitas Sumatera Utara Caroline Kepnes is author from , , America. Born in Hyannis, The United States 10 November 1976 . Her first novel You was shortlisted for a CWA New Blood Award. Caroline earned a BA in American

Civilization at and worked as a pop culture journalist--

Entertainment Weekly--and a TV writer--7th Heaven. She now writes full-time and lives in . A Lifetime series based on You is currently in production with and producing.

Novel also is a kind of literary work that can apply psychological theory.

Novel is fictional narratives representing a way of life or an experience so characters in novel are adopted from people in real life. The author applies psychological laws in creating characters of this novel. So, psychology can enter into literature by the study of creative process, and also the study of effects of literature upon its reader that can be analyzed by using extrinsic approach.

In this study, the writer wants to explain the literature, in this case of novel, can show the psychology phenomena that happen in the society. The writer use theory by Bernhard Bogerts to analyze topic in this novel. The writer wants to analyze leading character‘s obsessive love disorder there are characterized by stalking and extreme jealousy and resentment and the causes of obsessive love disorder that is ego.

In nowadays, as the reality of life, we know that a lot of people in this world want to get their lovely one by trying use many ways without to see its effect. The author of You applies the principles of psychology in creating the

5

Universitas Sumatera Utara leading character of this novel. She can depict the process of experience in life makes the personality of someone changes into obsessive love disorder and adopts it as the motif of novel and becomes the part of literature.

1.2 Problems of the Study

Based on explanation of the background above, these are some problems that have been formulated as follows:

1. How is obsessive love disorder characteristics portrayed on the leading

character in novel You?

2. What is the cause of obsessive love disorder portrayed on the leading

character in novel You?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

Dealing with the problems above, this thesis tries to find out the answer of those questions, they are:

1. To find out how obsessive love disorder characteristics portrayed on the

leading character in novel You.

2. To find out the cause of obsessive love disorder portrayed on the leading

character in novel You.

1.4 Scope of the Study

An analysis should have limitation in order to make the analysis focused

on the topic of the discussion. The analysis is focused on the characteristics of

6

Universitas Sumatera Utara obsessive love disorder that are stalking, extreme jealousy and resentment of

Joe as the leading character of novel You. and also the cause of obsessive

love disorder that is ego portrayed on the leading character.

1.5 Significance of the Study

This thesis provides some signification of the study, they are:

1. To help the readers who are interested in analyzing the literary works,

especially in analyzing novels.

from a novel.

3. This thesis could be used for the scientific research dealing with the

discussion about the behavior and the effect of obsessive love disorder

Universitas Sumatera Utara CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Literature and Psychology

Literature, mostly is defined as the entirely of written expression. Still, there is an understanding that not every written work can be categorized as literature in the more exact meaning of the word. The word aesthetic or artistic are two word that always used to characterize literary work and to diffrentiate it from any other kind of written document such as scholarly writing, legal document or books. Then we find many definitions of literature.

The word ‗Literature‘ is derived from Latin word littera or letter which means the smallest element of alphabetical writing. The word text that used to name the content of literary works is related to the word textile and it can be translated as fabric, just a single thread from fabric. Then words and sentences form a meaningful and coherent text.

Richard Taylor in his book Understanding the Elements of Literature

(1981 : 1) says that literature ―like other arts, is essentially an imaginative act, that is, an act of the writer‘s imagination in selecting, ordering and interpreting life experience‖. So, we can see that Taylor in defining literature focuses on the activity and the proces of creating literary works.

8

Universitas Sumatera Utara Sinha defines Letrature more specificly. In his book A hand Book of the

Study of Literature he says that : ―Literature in the true sense of the term is that kind of writing which is charged with human interest, and characterized by permanence, colouring of imagination and artistic embellishment. It deals with the life of man and his destenies on earth. It express thought, feeling and attitute towards life, which are permanent and universal, which, in other words do not change with the change of time and place‖ (1977 : 2).

The terms permanance, imagination, artistic and universality distinguish literature from journalism and advertisement, which sometimes contains brilliant pieces of expresion, and thoughtful discussion. The views and thoughts expressed in newspapers outlive their utility in relevancy in a year or two, but those literatures go on appealing to man through the corridor of time.

There are some qualities are of life likeness, sincerity and agressiveness. This is quality becomes the focus of Hudson‘s attention as he says in Sinha : ―Literature is a record of what men have seen in life, what they have experianced of it, what they have tought and felt about those aspects of it which have the most immediate and enduring interest of all of us. It is thus fundamentally an expression of life through the medium of language (1997 : 3).

People feel pleasure in reading a piece of literature because they find that the literary works reflect their own joy, happiness and sorrow, love and hated.

The readers expect to find in good literature it is sincerity to themselves, to their own experiance of life and to the world. According to Hudson in Sinha (1977 : 3)

9

Universitas Sumatera Utara the suggestive potential of literature has a power to appear to their emotion and imagination rather than to their intellect

In analyzing literary work, such as novel, we need to apply some approaches in case of getting the better ideas for understanding of how to analyze this literary work. These approaches can be applied to analyze a literary work from inside, outside, or from the both sides of aspects of literary work itself. In this case, the writer applies extrinsic approach to analyze the novel from outside of the text. The novel of You is bringing Obsessive Love Disorder as its main topic brings the analysis of the novel to psychological approach as well as extrinsic approach.

Richard Taylor (1981:1) said that literature is essentially an imaginative act that is an act of the writer‗s imagination in selecting, ordering, and interpreting life experience. Literature also refers to composition that tells stories, dramatize situation, express emotion and analyze advocates ideas. In enables us for recognizing human dreams and struggles in different places and times that we would never otherwise know. It provides the comparative basis from which we can see the worthiness in the aims of all peoples, and help us to see the beauty in the world around us. It also exercises emotions though interest, concern, tension, excitement, hope, fear, regret, laughter, and sympathy.

Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental process, primarily among humans. Human behaviours and mental process are nothing less than the substance of our lives, actions, though, attitudes, moods, even hope and dreams.

10

Universitas Sumatera Utara Rathus (2007:4) explains about psychology. He says that:

―Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental process. Topics of interest to psychologist include the nervous system, sensation and perception, learning and memory intelligence, language, thought, growth of a development, personality, stress and health, psychological disorder, way of treating those disorders, sexual behavior, and the behavior of people in social setting such as groups and organizations‖ Like other science psychology has its own goals. Its goals are to understand behaviour and mental process. In psychology, psychologist observes and records how people relate one to another and to environment. They also have learned much that they can help people to fulfil their potential as human being and increase understanding between individuals, groups, nations, and culture.

The object of psychology and literature is human being. Both of this science studies about human behaviour or character and human development.

Literature consists of the psychology of the character who conducts a story while everything that relates to the characters such as attitudes or behaviour and normality are part of psychology. Psychology of literature is a study of literature which is value a works as a psyche activity. The writer uses his feeling and emotion in his work. It also happens to the readers, they will use their feeling and emotion in reading the literary works because it is coming from the experience of the writer himself and the experience from other people (Wellek and Warren,

1956:81-92).

11

Universitas Sumatera Utara 2.2 Character

Character can be defined as people created by playwright, and imagined by the audiences. They must fiction and non-fiction. The characters usually presented by description and through their action; speech, and thoughts. A well- developed character is one that has been thoroughly characterized, with many traits shown in narrative. Character development is very important in character- driven literature, where stories focus not on events, but on individual personalities.

Kennedy (1991:47) said that character is an imagined person who is exists in the story. However, characters in novel have been specially created by the author. Characterization is the author‗s ways of describing his characters in a literary work or author‗s mean of differencing one character to another.

Characters are closely related to the plot because character means action, while the action from the plot of literary work. An author may show the characters in two general ways, they are: (1) directly, telling his reader the characters‗ qualities, and (2) through action, that shows the characters‗ deeds by which characters may be revealed.

There are some characters that viewed from the role aspect and the importance level of characters in a story, they are:

12

Universitas Sumatera Utara a. Major Characters

Round character is a character with complex and many-sided moral

qualities and personal traits. Round characters can be classified into two

kinds of characters; protagonist and antagonist. Protagonist is the central

character in the story, whereas, antagonist is the force in the story that is a

conflict with protagonist.

b. Minor Character

A flat character is a minor character in a work or fiction that does not

undergo substantial change or growth in the course of a story. Flat

character has only one or two distinguishing moral qualities or personal

traits. The characters play a supporting role to the major or main character

that, as a rule should be round.

c. Leading character

Leading character is the centered individual very dominant. As an

individual, the leading focused personality. Leading character emerged as

long side the extraordinary character, a character that might be called

prototypical. The prototypical character is not a stereotypical but a fully

rounded, three dimensional character.

Through the explanation abouth the character above, the character of Joe isthe type of leading character, because the story is focused on his personality.

13

Universitas Sumatera Utara 2.3 Obsessive Love Disorder

Obsessive Love Disorder is "an extreme form of Love that transcends into obsession overtime. It is characterized by an unhealthy attachment towards someone and is usually triggered by factors such as anxiety, insecurity and vulnerability‖ - (Bogerts, 2005)

Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images, experienced as intrusive and inappropriate, which cause marked anxiety or distress. The person tries to ignore or suppress such thoughts or neutralize them with some other thought or action. The belief or feeling that the obsession must be responded to creates the compulsion. The emotional response to the obsession may give the message to the brain that this is an important thought and that it should therefore be attended to and repeatedly re-visited. Conversely, if the person is able to have a neutral response to the obsession , it often will decrease in the frequency of the repetition (Phillipson , 1991). The person recognizes that the obsessional thoughts, impulses or images are a product of his or her own mind.

The initial phase of relationship comes with an overwhelming and instant attraction which slowly moves on to become a tender, loving and beautiful relationship based on companionship and trust but soon, these feelings of love, if unchecked, matures into an intense maniac desire to possess which overrides the trust and companionship a couple once shared leading to obsessive love disorder.

Obsessive Love Disorder has been recognized as a serious mental disorder hence the prescription of treatment by psychotherapist .

14

Universitas Sumatera Utara Obsessive is a word often used to describe someone‘s intense interest in something. For example, a man who stalks movie star is totally obsessed with her.

An obsession also can refer to an intense interest in a sport, a hobby, or a career.

Obsessions often express the idea that one may harm others or oneself. Every time it is experienced, the obsession can have the same emotional impact as re- experiencing a trauma (Barlow, 1988).

Obsessive Love Disorder has its foundation in the insatiable desire of wanting to possess the target of one's obsession. The emotion experienced when in love i.e mutual respect, trust and security paves way and jealousy, insecurity and resentment takes over. No matter how deep your loves claim is, if mutual respect, trust and security has been replaced by jealousy, insecurity and resentment, your love has become an obsession.

Obsessive love has been romanticized in literature for centuries, as well as by the media, once the media came into existence. From the mutual suicides of

Romeo and Juliet to even many of the most recent romantic movies, being obsessed with the object of one's love is often held up as something to aspire to rather than having the potentially devastating aftermath of the behaviors when the movies fade to .

2.3.1 Characteristics of Obsessive Love Disorder

(Bogerts, 2005) says that the person who suffers from obsessive love disorder have some characteristics, there are :

15

Universitas Sumatera Utara 1. Stalking : This can be physically or through the various existing Social

Media in order to keep tabs on them. Stalking can be defined as the willful

and repeated following, watching or harassing of another person.

Someone have ever accused their partner of infidelity even when the

evidence suggests otherwise because of their own insecurity. A stalker

often suffer from a lack of social skills and finds communicating with

others challenging. Their behavior reflects their obsession.

2. Resentment: Unwarranted suspicion of every move, resentment for

relationship with others and violence. The feeling of displeasure or

indignation some act, remark, person, etc. regarded as causing injury or

insult. The definition is bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly. It

is also known as bitterness, and is the basic foundation of hatred. It

involves disgust, sadness, and surprise in the sense of the perception of

injustice. It additionally combines the feelings of fear, anger, and

disappointment.

3. Extreme jealousy : Jealousy is a complex emotion that encompasses

feelings ranging from fear of abandonment to rage and humiliation.

Someone get jealous of his partner spending time with other people, when

they could be spending time with him. Feel compelled to know exactly

where they are and who they are with anytime they are not together.

16

Universitas Sumatera Utara 2.3.2 The Causes of Obsessive Love Disorder

1. Neglect

When children experience neglect from parents or primary caregivers, they never develop the ability to form secure attachments to those they love. Because their basic need for love and care was denied, their attachments to others will be anxious and insecure. This is known as an attachment disorder.

Some people with attachment disorders become love avoidant: their fears of abandonment cause them to avoid close relationships entirely. At the opposite extreme, others with this disorder may become clingy, needy, and overly anxious to please, setting them up for Obsessive Love Disorder.

2. Abuse

Like neglect, abuse from a caregiver violates a child's basic need to feel safe and loved. When a child suffers from emotional or physical abuse, he carries that pain with him for a lifetime. With so much pain and so many unmet needs, the sufferer seeks to fill the empty places with his love object.

3. Ego

Having an inflated sense of self, a feeling of being special or different such that you expect to be an authority. Therefore, thoughts of losing the partner breeds the desire to possess and control the other in other words putting your partner under check and leash.

METHOD OF RESEARCH

3.1 Research Design

This thesis is using qualitative methods. This method explains about how to understand structure and pattern from the data. Prof. Dr. Afrizal, M.A(2014:13) say that Qualitative research methods are defined as methods of research in the social sciences that collect and analyze data in the form of words (oral or written) and human actions and researchers do not attempt to calculate or quantify the qualitative data that has been obtained and thus do not analyze the number.

Observing the data to understand the phenomenon of what is experienced by the subjects of the research such as behaviour, perception, motivation, action, etc. (Moleong 2007:6). The data of this research is words, phrase, and sentence which are to analyze the obsessive love disorder from the leading character and the effect of obsessive love disorder behaviour from the leading character to peoples around him.

In this thesis, the writer applied the library research by searching and collecting references that contain and support the topic. The writer also applied the internet research by collecting data and browsing some information from the internet to support my thesis. The first step, the writer read the novel and understand the story. The writer read You by Caroline Kepnes to get ideas of the

Then the writer find and selected some data that will support the case of the behavior and the effect of obsessive love disorder. The writer use the quotation from the novel to get the relevant theory, the writer using psychological theory by Bernhard Bogerts. The writer using descriptive qualitative method to analyzing and concluding the research.

Universitas Sumatera Utara CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS AND FINDING

4.1 Characteristics of obsessive love disorder

4.1.1 Joe’s stalking

Stalking can be defined as the willful and repeated following, watching or harassing of another person. Following is an act of a person that can be physically or through the various existing Social Media in order to keep tabs on them. Watching can be defined as interesting with something . Being stalker is the way of the leading character to be with the woman who made him obsessed.

I want to be here, fully, watching you bite your unpainted nails and turn your head to the left, no, bite that pink, widen those eyes, to the right, no, reject biographies, self-help (thank God), and slow down when you make it to fiction. (Kepnes, 2014:1)

Watching another person is characteristics of a stalker, the existence of an interest with another person, that is obsession. Joe is watching Guinevere Beck when she walks into the bookstore. Joe falls in love at the first sight with Beck.

He thanks to God because sending a woman for himself. Joe is watching her detail. Everything of Beck looks perfect. Joe can‘t stop his eyes from Beck. It can be defined as stalking.

22

Universitas Sumatera Utara Stalking is supposed to be an act to follow someone secretely. It is done in order to get self satisfaction without any interference of others. It is a sole spy watching as if someone is determined to be a target. On this view Joe has been haunted by the presence of a young lady named Guinevere Beck. He lives in his own fantasy as if Beck were so familiar with him. In other word, Joe is playing with his own imagination that he recognition with Beck is really true. As a matter of fact, it is only a fake dream. He just lives on the fantasy he creats.

The first time Joe finds the name of Beck was on her credit card in a book store and it made him real crazy on Beck. He is happy enough to find the name as though he found Beck both imaginatively and factually. He can not stand deciding the moment of looking the name in the card is so different from looking the person face to face. Joe is making up his own role that he has really found out

Beck personality.

Personal illusion experienced by Joe is regarded as an empty reality. He just creates something unseen to be seen. He makes himself known and liked more by Beck though it is not true at all. Beck has nothing to do with Joe on her life matter and let alone Beck does not know or recognize Joe. At this blind-love game, Joe lives on his alone illusion. He adds the picture of Beck in his world though the world of him is really a dream.

23

Universitas Sumatera Utara The first thing I had to find was your home and the internet was designed with love in mind. It gave me so much of you, Beck, your twitter profile: Guinevere Beck @The UnRealBeck. (Kepnes, 2014:7-8)

So many things he can do to communicate with Beck, and the first thing is by using the internet. The internet is a beautiful thing that can help Joe stalks

Beck‘s life. A person can stalk people through various ways. One of them by social media. There are not a lot of Guinevere Beck in the world so it becomes easy for Joe to find Beck. The internet is giving so much to him. Through stalking

Beck‘s twitter, Joe found that Beck is a writer. She writes poems, short stories, and various online journals.Beck is a writer born and raised on Nantucket. Her parents, a brother and a sister lives there but Beck stays in New York alone.

Joe is not just stalking her twitter, but he also stalks her by following her.

He is obsessed with her until he go to her place. Joe stalks her by sitting down on the stoop while watching Beck through the open window. He is watching Beck walking around naked in front of the open window.

Day pass and he grows anxious. Joe comes in the day, in the night and everyday he comes to stalk and Beck‘s window were always open.Joe gets into

Beck home when Beck was not there and it is so easy to open the door.

He leaves, and the first thing I do is take your computer and sit on your couch and smell your green pillow and drink water out of your Brown mug. (Kepnes, 2014: 16)

24

Universitas Sumatera Utara He stalks her room and do so many things there. The first thing is reading on her computer. He is doing everything. He could find out everything about

Beck because he is obsessed with her. He is obsessed with all the things that belongs to her.

And the bullshit thing is, if someone saw the three of us, well, most people would think I‘m the weird one just because I followed you here. (Kepnes, 2014: 24)

Joe is following wherever she goes. There are Joe, Peach and Beck waiting in Green point Avenue subway station at 2:45 in the morning. Beck and

Peach did not know that Joe was there. Joe is obsessed with Beck so he is following her. He is following her and watching everything she did. He does not care what people think about him. He keeps following her wherever she goes.

He is watching her until there is something happened when Joe follows them,

Beck falls to the track and Joe helps her but she did not know that Joe takes her phone which also fell. Beck only knows that Joe helps her on the track. With that phone, Joe starts to stalk her more.

I know this because I have your phone and you are not the kind of girl who locks her phone with the four-digit password. I have been reading your e- mails. I have taken pictures of the passwords you keep in your password folder. This way, when you change your password, I‘ll know the possibilities. You are not the kind of girl who comes up with new passwords. (Kepnes, 2014: 33-34)

With that phone, it becomes easier to stalk Beck. He is stalking her phone, email, and he can do anything with knowing all her passwords. He takes picture of

25

Universitas Sumatera Utara the passwords and keep as his folder. He loves reading her email, learning her life and he always mark new messages unread so that she will not get alarmed.

4.1.2 Joe’s Extreme Jealousy

Jealousy is a complex emotion that encompasses feelings ranging from fear of abandonment to rage and humiliation. Someone who suffer from

Obsessive Love get jealous of his partner spending time with other people, when they could be spending time with him. Feel compelled to know exactly where they are and who they are with anytime they are not together. Extreme jealousy is a feeling of angry and unhappy because someone gets something that you wish to have.

Joe , the leading character who suffer from obsessive love disorder, follows Beck to the subway station. Beck is trying to talk with Benji by phone, her ex-boyfriend.

Your phone.Enough with this phone, Beck. It‘s gonna do you in waste your voice, and cripple your fingers. Fuck that phone. I‘d like to throw it on the tracks and hold you as we wait for the train to run it down. ( Kepnes, 2014: 24)

Joe gets jealous when he watched Beck with her phone. She spends her time to talk with Benji and it makes Joe totally jealous because there‘s someone on her phone who gets her attention. Someone who suffers from obsessive love disorder wants to have attention . Beck is too focused on her phone because there is a message from Benji and make her fall to the track with the phone. Joe is jealous with everything that relate to Beck although it is only her phone.

26

Universitas Sumatera Utara From the first time Joe stalks Beck‘s email, Joe knows that Beck dated with two guys, Charlie and Benji. Joe thinks that Beck hooked on Benji and Joe can not get Beck off Benji until he knows about Benji.

Chana wrote back first: Beck, is this guy you met at KGB? Wythe maybe. And this tell me that you meet too many guys. You have this hunger for strangers. That‘s why you read Craigslist ―Casual Encounters.‖ No, you don‘t have casual encounters (thank Christ), but at the same time you treat life like a giant fucking casual encounter, wasting time with Benji, with random guys from places like KGB. (Kepnes, 2014 : 38)

Jealous is a feeling of unhappy because someone you love is showing interest in another person. Joe feels so jealous when he knows that Beck is dating another person. Joe is jealous with everyone, who get everything of her such as attention. But he can not get angry with Beck because he loved Beck so much. Before Chana replied Beck‘s email, Beck told them that she have to be a stereotypical chick that meets a nice guy works at business. Joe gets jealous but all he can do is just keep it and tells some humor with her. Hope that she will love him but instead she didn‘t reply his messages for three hours and one day.

Joe is very obsessed with Beck and does not give up. He invites Beck to meet and finally they met. They start talking and share some story. Beck tell him about her favorite birthday party. Her father lets her and two friends take the ferry to the mainland and she met a guy.

27

Universitas Sumatera Utara ―you still know him?‖ You smile at me. ―I was referring to Hugh Grant.‖ I‘ll fucking kill Hugh Grant. ―ah.‖ (Kepnes, 2014 : 73)

He is really jealous and envy with a thirteen-year-old boy because Beck says that he means a lot to her. Although on that day they don‘t know each other. But Joe's jealousy towards Beck increasingly happened because Joe was very obsessive with Beck.

Joe gets jealousy because of Benji, her ex-boyfriend. Beck is not ready to have a relationship with Joe because Beck have ―Benji Brain‖ . Beck always show that she is interests with Benji and it‘s portrayed :

I fucked up. The day after our date, I left you a voice mail asking to take you to a movie at the Angelika. Fucking amateur . you responded with a text two hours later : ―already saw it actually and still hung over kind of and have so much writing to do. But see you soon! ― In truth, you hadn‘t seen the movie and you weren‘t hung over and you weren‘t writing, unless by ―writing‖ you mean e-mailing your friends about Benji. Fucking Benji. (Kepnes, 2014: 82)

Jealous is feeling of envy. Joe is envy because all that she do is only talking about Benji. She is lying to Joe but Joe knows everything because he can get access of all her social media.

Not only Benji, but Joe is also jealous with Peach, Beck‘s best friend which Joe hated. Peach is in hospital because she got attacked in the park. What

Peach really need is only Beck. She loved Beck and Joe gets mad because of it.

Joe really hate Peach because Peach is a liar, a poor girl who was born from

28

Universitas Sumatera Utara sociopathic family. Joe gets jealous and hate it when Beck care too much for

Peach more than him. Peach called Beck when Joe walks with Beck. They walked together and when Joe wants to buy some balloon for Beck, Joe can hear that

Peach wason Beck‘s phone.

You never sounded farther away from me and I will take that balloon and stab the fuck out of it and at the same time I will take that balloon and tie it around Peach‘s neck because WHO THE FUCK CAN CUNT OUT OVER A BALLOON? (Kepnes, 2014: 126)

Jealous is a feeling of angry and unhappy because of something that a person wishing to have. Peach is obsessed with Beck. She really loved Beck not only as a best friend. Joe gets jealous with Peach because when he invites Beck to get coffee, Beck refuses it because she must go to the hospital to accompany

Peach.

―how‘d she take it?‖ ―not well.‖ ―fuck,‖ I say. ―and the saddest thing is, it‘s not the first this happened.‖ ―fuck.‖ (Kepnes, 2014: 231)

Peach loves Beck not only as best friend.Peach is trying to touch part of

Beck‘s body and it‘s really making Joe gets jealous with it. But all he can do is just saying harsh word. Beck tells about it when she informs Joe about Peach is death.

29

Universitas Sumatera Utara Not only with Benji and Peach, Joe is also Jealous with Dr. Nicky, the person who helps depressed people. Beck is going to Dr. Nicky to get therapy but there‘s something between them.

I am an imaginative guy and I picture a lot of scenarios, but what I find in the MacBook Air blows my mind: a screensaver shot of you and Dr. Nicky taking one of those motherfucking pictures they call a selfie. You‘re both naked in my bed, the one I brought back on the ferry, the bed I built for you, for us. He‘s in our fucking bed and I go into the kitchen and the gin out the freezer and pour it into the sink over all the dirty dishes. Fuck you, computer. Fuck you, Nicky. (Kepnes, 2014: 257)

Joe is feeling jealous when he finds the picture of Beck and Dr. Nicky.

There are over 437 e-mails between Beck and Nicky until Joe finds that picture.

Dr. Nicky has been defiling Beck and taking advantage of Beck and letting Beck pay him to touch her. Joe is totally jealous with this.

4.1.3 Joe’s resentment

Resentment is one of the characteristics of Obsessive Love Disorder.

Obsessive is a word often used to describe someone‘s intense interest in something. Obsessions often express the idea that one may harm others or oneself.

Obsessive love disorder of course have effect. That effect is resentment and tend to murder. In this case, the writer tells about the resentment that the leading character do to the women which he obsessed with.

Joe is jealous towards Beck resulted in resentment. Anyone who is close to Beck will not be safe. Someone who suffers Obsessive Love Disorder will do everything although resentment, to move everyone around his love. Like Benji,

30

Universitas Sumatera Utara Beck‘s ex-boyfriend . Joe uses his new email account to impersonate Nathan

Herzog (the food‘s critic) and Benji will receive an email from Nathan. Joe invites Benji to meet in the bookstore, the place that Joe work in. Benji is coming and well, Joe plays his game :

Here he goes, down the stairs. He doesn‘t wake up while I drag him into the cage and I lock him in there and smile. Excellent. (Kepnes, 2014: 44)

The resentment is happening because Joe is obsessed with Beck.

Resentment is a feeling of angry because you have been forced to accept someone that you don‘t like. It happen because Joe don‘t accept that Benji gets her love.

Joe gets angry with Benji because Beck really loved Benji. Joe drags him into the cage and locks him there. Joe is happy to do that and he smiled after it. Joe took

Benji‘s wallet and phone. Joe also locked him down stairs of the bookstore. Joe ask him a lot of questions such as give a test to try some cup of soda and then choose which one is his own product.

I never raise my voice so it scares him pretty good when I do. ―take the fucking cup‖. He falls on his knees, the fucker, and he‘s probably over identified with the character in doctor sleep. (Kepnes, 2014: 66)

One of the characteristics of Resentment is screaming and saying harshly and Joe is doing all of it. He screams and it makes Benji scares until he falls on his knees and look like as the character in a book called doctor sleep.

Not only that, Joe also brings Benji‘s favorite things. They are a vegan burrito, a soy latte, a pint of fake ice cream and the New York observer.

31

Universitas Sumatera Utara ―did you kill me yet? ― ―eat your fucking ice cream. ― ―it‘s not ice cream.‖ He laughs. ―it‘s nondairy.‖ I roar, ―shut up and eat! ― He laughs and it‘s called smack because I want to smack him, with his arms flailing. He‘s licking the pint of not-ice cream like the junkie he is. And this is what you love, Beck? He picks up the observer and tries to tear it in half but he‘s too fucked up and he staggers to his feet. (Kepnes, 2014: 84)

Another characteristic of resentment is violence.Joe really hate Benji because Beck loved him too much. Joe gives a pint of fake ice cream and forces him to eat it. Joe is angry and he roars. Joe wants to smack Benji slowly with another way. Joe is happy to do that and he feels satisfied.

Benji tells to Joe that all that Beck want is money and him. Joe did not believe what Benji talks about and Benji proved it with telling him that today actually they should be going to Ikea. Joe gets angry and it portrayed in :

I will not let him win. I unlock the cage and he tries to escape . I kick him into the corner like the dog that he is, pick up his leftover drugs off the floor, and flush them down the toilet. (Kepnes, 2014 : 86)

Someone who suffers Obsessive Love Disorder never wants to let his love go with other people except him. Joe gets angry with Benji‘s words and violate him. Joe kicks Benji into the corner like a dog. Joe did not care what Benji feels. Joe keeps doing what makes him happy. He can do everything when he gets angry.

Another characteristic of resentment is murder. Joe is trying to kill

Benji. He remembers that Benji tells that he is allergics to peanuts and trying to test it.

32

Universitas Sumatera Utara

I go to my corner store that‘s not as nice as your corner store and pick up more rubber gloves and peanut oil and then I hit up Dean & Deluca for a soy latte. I get back to the shop and I pour a healthy tablespoon of peanut oil into the soy latte. (Kepnes, 2014 : 100)

He goes to the corner store to buy peanut oil and soy latte and pour both of them. He gives the soy latte which was pour with peanut oil to Benji and it works. Benji isn‘t lying . He is allergic to peanuts. He died slowly. Joe started to stress-out about what to do with Benji‘s body. He learned to cremate a corpse on

Halloween day when Beck is stress-out about her dress for Halloween party. He killed Benji because his obsessive with Beck and didn‘t want Benji to get her.

Not only about Benji, Peach , one of Beck‘s best friend also interrupt him. She always get Beck‘s attention and Joe really hate her. Joe wants to kill her from Beck‘s life until no one can get Beck‘s attention except him. Joe follows

Peach quietly when peach and Beck is holiday on Peach Salinger‘s home at 43 plovers way half mile down the beach.

I see Peach emerge on the patio, a hot speck in the distance. She stretches and she trots down the walkway and here we go. With each passing second, I can hear more clearly, her breathing, her feet pounding, and the Elton John blasting from her phone. She passes me, swoosh, and I leap out of my foxhole like a jack in the box and run after her. She doesn‘t hear me. She is fearless on this beach. I grab her by the ponytail. before she can even scream, I ram her into the sand and straddle her back. She struggles, kicking, but her mouth is in the sand and I pick up the rock in my pocket. She is fading and I owe her a little help. I hit her head with the rock and she is quite, at last. I flip her over and I‘m shaking. She is gone, at peace. (Kepnes, 2014 : 186-187)

The effect of resentment tend to murder. Joe killed Peach. Joe followed

Peach and violate her. He grabs her and rams her into the sand. He hits her head

33

Universitas Sumatera Utara with rock and makes her dead slowly. Joe load Peach‘s pockets and jackets with rock just in case she doesn‘t disappear. Joe takes her phone and he drops her into the ocean. Joe finally killed her from Beck‘s life. He is satisfied with that.

Not only Benji and Peach, there‘s Dr. Nicky. Beck is depressed since

Benji and Peach is dead. She is going to Dr. Nicky to get therapy but there‘s something between both of them that makes Joe resent him because Dr. Nicky get

Beck‘s attention. As always, Joe will kill everyone who blocks him with Beck.

And that resentment portrayed on these quotations :

I pick up my pace and I hold my new nightstick. (I went to the Army Navy store to cool off after that bullshit with Officer Minty; it‘s only fair that e all be armed against cops who think they‘re above the law.) I clench my jaw. I am gaining on him and I can do this, one fell swoop. But then I feel a vibration in my pocket. I have no choice but to duck into an alley. Nicky will turn around if he hears the phone and I can‘t make it stop and I can‘t breathe and my hands shake and I look at my phone. (Kepnes, 2014 : 227)

Joe meets Dr. Nicky and kill him because he is trying to have sex with

Beck although Beck wants it too. If Joe let him alive, Beck will eventually get what she thinks and wants, that is to be with Dr. Nicky. Joe do not want it to happen so he kills Dr. Nicky. He killed Dr. Nicky with one swing with his new nightstick.

Day passes by and there‘s only Joe and Beck. They live together. But something happened. Beck finally knows that Joe stalked her. Joe tapped her email and hide her phone. Beck is angry and screams at Joe. Joe is holding her

34

Universitas Sumatera Utara hand and trying to calm her down. Joe tells her to not screaming. The neighbor can hear and they will come. But she did not shut up and all can not be controlled.

I count to three. I give you the chance to shut up. But you don‘t shut up and after three, I take your little head in my hand – sorry – and smash it against the wall- sorry. (Kepnes, 2014 : 255)

Joe gets angry with Beck because she finally knows that Joe is obsessed with her until he killed Benji and Peach. Beck screams loudly and Joe smash her head to the wall. He gives her the chance to shut up but she keep screaming. He can‘t control his anger. And then Beck tells Joe that she will leave Joe alone and will not comeback to Joe. Joe does not accept her words and get angry with it.

You failed and you do not get a gold star and I squeeze your neck to make the wrong answers go away. They fester in your bulging eyes and they turn your cheeks Nantucket red and I squeeze , harder. (Kepnes, 2014 : 275)

Joe squeeze to hard and Beck have gone quiet. He don‘t want her leave him alone. But she keep wants go away from him. He gets angry and squeezes her neck and hopes that she will change her mind but it failed.

But Beck lied, she tricked Joe, latch on to his ankle and pull him and he fall over. But Joe is stronger than her. Joe is squeezing her neck again. Joe is really angry watching Beck‘s behavior.

I shove the pages into your mouth and your pupils slip around and your back arches. This is the sound of you dying. (Kepnes, 2014 : 277)

He took a book into her mouth and squeezing her neck harder and finally what started as a love obsession become a murder.

35

Universitas Sumatera Utara 4.2. The cause of obsessive love disorder

4.2.1 Joe’s Ego

Ego can be defined as the possess feeling and control the other. Having an inflated sense of self, a feeling of being special or different such that you expect to be an authority and priority.

Did I mention that you‘re lucky to have me? You are. I am a bed- stuy man by birth, sober, collected, and well aware of my whereabouts and yours. A protector. ( Kepnes, 2014 : 24)

Joe feels that Beck is the luckiest woman because she has a man like him. Joe thinks that he is the most comfortable place for Beck. There is not any man who can care about Beck like Joe. Joe calls himself as a protector to control

Beck‘s life. A possessive word. The ego that Joe has to take care of Beck. Even though actually Beck is not aware of his whereabouts.

You are mine now and you‘ll do as I say . (Kepnes, 2014 : 63)

Joe expects to be Beck‘s authority and priority. He feels that he is special for Beck and Beck must do what he said. The word ―mine‖ is explain that his ego and possessive feeling to Beck. He just do what he thinks that good for them but actually it just sense of himself.

You don‘t know about this. But you need to know that I am the kind of guy who prepares for emergencies like this. I need to save you. I am your someone and I will save your life. (Kepnes, 2014 : 42)

36

Universitas Sumatera Utara Joe is feeling of being special when Beck needs him. Joe is protects to

Beck until he can say that he will save her life even though Beck did not need it.

Joe is possessive with Beck in every situation. He wants to be her everything.

You don‘t treat me like I‘m your guy; you go to drinks with people from school and call me after the drinks and you don‘t act like there‘s anything weird about the fact that you didn‘t invite me to go along. I‘m your phone and I don‘t like it. You don‘t want to know about my day. (Kepnes, 2014 : 109)

Joe wants Beck to make him as her priority. He is angry because Beck is not treats him like he treats her. Beck is does not think there is anything weird or wrong about her behavior to Joe. Beck is does not care about Joe‘s day. But Joe is a possessive man who wants her to know all about him, what he wants and what he does all day. That is Joe‘s ego. Joe does not care about what Beck‘s feeling to him, he is only obey his ego.

Universitas Sumatera Utara ii. Summary of the novel

In the novel You by Caroline Kepnes, Joseph ―Joe‖ Goldberg is willing to do anything for the woman he loves — even commit murder. Joe is obsessed with the beautiful Guinevere Beck from the time he first sees her in the bookstore where he works.
