  • Baltimore Rookie Watkins Pitches Orioles to 6-1 Win Vs Rays
Baltimore rookie Watkins pitches Orioles to 6-1 win vs Rays ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rookie right-hander Spenser Watkins gave up one run in six innings as the Baltimore Orioles tied a season high with their third consecutive win, 6-1 over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. The 28-year old Watkins, making his third start and fourth career appearance, scattered four hits, walked two and struck out seven. His ERA dropped from 1.74 to 1.65 (three earned runs over 16 1/3 innings). Watkins (2-0) was signed as a minor league free agent in February after not pitching in 2020 and spending 2014-19 in the Detroit organization. He had considered taking a high school freshman team coaching job in Arizona before signing with Baltimore. It’s the fifth three-game winning streak for the Orioles, who have an AL-worst record of 31-62. Cole Sulser, Paul Fry and Tyler Wells completed the five- hitter. Baltimore entered 0-6 against the Rays this season, getting outscored 48-21. Tampa Bay All-Star catcher Mike Zunino exited after three innings with left hip flexor tightness. Designated hitter Yandy Diaz departed after five innings due to neck spasms. The Rays (55-39) are 8-3 since July 4. Ryan Mountcastle flared an RBI double down the right field line and Anthony Santander hit a sacrifice fly as the Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the first. Pat Valaika had a two-out, two-run single during a four-run sixth that made it 6-0.

The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.

  • Randy Arozarena Has Been Raking, and Orioles Are up Next
Rays’ Randy Arozarena has been raking, and Orioles are up next ST. PETERSBURG — Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena seems primed for a big weekend in Baltimore. The 2020 postseason breakout star has been on a torrid stretch, hitting .404 (23-for-57) over his last 14 games with 12 extra-base hits (including six homers), 11 RBIs and a 1.285 OPS. And he has been feasting all season on Orioles’ pitching, hitting .459 (17-for-37) over eight games with 10 extra-base hits (including seven homers), 16 RBIs and a 1.582 OPS. “He’s swung the bat well,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday. “We know what he can do when he’s really hot. “He’s had some good games against Baltimore this year. Hopefully he can find that rhythm there and just continue it for the next couple weeks, and maybe two months. Whatever it takes. He’s such a big part of our offense.” Overall, Arozarena is hitting .268 with 16 homers, 52 RBIs, 11 steals (and a majors-most seven caught stealings) with an .802 OPS. Yarbrough on the attack Friday starter Ryan Yarbrough has had some good games in Baltimore, going 1-1 with a 2.89 earned-run average in five appearances. None better than July 14, 2019, when he followed opener Ryan Stanek’s pair of 1-2-3 innings with six of his own and went to the ninth with a chance for the first combined perfect game in major-league history. Yarbrough gave up two hits, and reliever Oliver Drake another, before sealing the 4-1 win.
