Governor John Evans History Mss.00226

Few men are fortunate enough to have one highly successful career in their lifetime. John

Evans managed to crowd several diverse careers into his long life. Even in years filled with rags- to-riches stories as young men created a new, uniquely American civilization based on progress and technology, John Evans' story would tower above the ordinary.

John Evans was born March 9, 1814, the oldest child of David and Rachel Evans, in

Warren County, Ohio. John's father was a farmer who turned his need for supplemental income into a lucrative hardware business. That success, in turn, allowed him to invest in real estate.

John inherited his father's business acumen as well as his belief in real estate as a solid source of wealth.

Although David Evans expected his oldest son to continue in the family business, John

Evans knew he would not be content with a life spent either selling hardware or farming. After many family arguments, John enrolled in medical school. He obtained his medical degree from

Transylvania University in Ohio, in March of 1838. Several prospects for establishing a medical practice were sabotaged by the unusual healthiness of the population, so he settled in West Milton,

Ohio, in December, 1838. At the same time he married Hannah Canby.

West Milton residents also proved unduly healthy, and John Evans moved his practice to

Attica, Indiana, in July 1839. Attica proved to be the turning point in Evans's medical career. He established a thriving practice in partnership with his friend, Isaac Fisher. Two sons were born in

Attica, Joseph in 1839 and David in 1841. During his years in Attica, Evans converted from

Quakerism to the Methodist faith and became involved in Freemasonry.

From their base in Attica, Evans and Fisher developed a plan to establish an asylum for the insane in Indiana. In 1843 Evans moved his family to Indianapolis to be near the legislative debate on the asylum issue. A bill for the establishment of a state asylum was approved January 15,

1844, with Evans one of three commissioners appointed to bring the plan to fruition. For that purpose Evans traveled through the eastern states studying various asylums. His

1

recommendations upon his return were to place the asylum outside the town, where fresh water and fresh foods were available. The recommendation was accepted, and on January 31, 1846,

Evans was appointed to supervise the construction.

While working on the asylum project in Indiana, Evans had begun teaching at Rush Medical

College in Chicago, and he moved permanently to Chicago in 1848. One of his many accomplishments during his tenure at Rush was the invention of an obstetrical extractor, designed to lessen the trauma to the baby of forceps use during birth. He was also active in instituting a program of quarantine for cholera, writing on the issue, and presenting his views to Congress.

Even after he had given up the practice of medicine, Evans was still concerned with medical inventions. In 1872 he received a patent for a suspended bed to be used in ships to alleviate seasickness.

In Chicago, Evans established the basis of his fortune by investing in Chicago real estate.

In these endeavors he prospered, but all was not perfect. His first two children had died before the move to Chicago and a daughter, Josephine, had been born. Shortly after the move to Chicago, his wife Hannah was stricken with tuberculosis. Given the best medical care available, her health improved. The success of Evans' real estate ventures allowed the family to build a substantial house. Hannah and John moved in with high hopes for the future. Just when everything seemed to be going well, Hannah fell ill again and died October 9, 1850.

John Evans was devastated by this wife's death, but his family rallied round him, and soon he was back attending to business. During the early 1850s he realized that Chicago had the potential of becoming a great trading city and involved himself in banking and railroad building, in addition to his real estate ventures, to be sure of reaping the rewards of such growth.

Another project which occupied Evans' time in these years was the founding on June 4,

1850, of Northwestern University as a Methodist institution. Evans was the first president of the board of trustees. One of the other members of the board was Orrington Lunt, and it was through that connection that Evans met his second wife, Margaret Patten Gray. Margaret's lively disposition restored John's optimism and enthusiasm. They were married August 18, 1853.

2

Work on the new university continued with operations beginning in November 1855 with ten students on its campus in Evanston. Evans had by then also established his home in the town of

Evanston, named after its most prominent citizen. Evans contributed both land and cash to carry the university through its early years and continued to be a supporter of the institution he founded even after he had moved west.

That move was preceded by Evans' involvement with the newly formed Republican party.

Both his religious beliefs and an innate dislike for slavery caused him to campaign for the

Republican party in the presidential campaign of 1860. As a result of his campaigning for Lincoln,

Evans was appointed territorial of Colorado on March 26, 1862.

Evans wanted to turn and Colorado into a thriving, prosperous area, and he believed that a railroad connection to the East was the quickest and surest way of accomplishing these ends. Much of his first year in office was spent traveling the state and working with surveying crews to find a feasible passage through the formidable Rockies. He thought Berthoud Pass was the best choice and lobbied in its favor. He was absent from Colorado from August until November

1863, attending a railroad conference in Chicago and then making a trip to Washington to further the state's interests.

One of the major obstacles to development in Denver and Colorado was the Indian problem. The state was home to such varied tribes as the Utes, Cheyennes, Arapahos, Kiowas, and Sioux. Other tribes traversed the state during the yearly buffalo hunt. All the tribes were in various degrees of conflict with each other and with the whites. Prior to Evans' appointment, a treaty had been made with some of the Indians providing for the Indians to be placed on a reservation and taught the rudiments of farming. The treaty had been sent to Washington for ratification, and when it returned much of the land allotted to the Indians by the original treaty had been removed. Added to these tensions was the fact that the United States was embroiled in the

Civil War, and it was believed that the Confederates were attempting to draw the Indians into the fight on their side.

Thus the situation developed leading to the one blot on John Evans' record. In November

3

1864, an encampment of Cheyennes and Arapahos were attacked without warning, and in the ensuing massacre many Indian women and children were slaughtered and mutilated by the

Colorado militia. Evans had attempted to mitigate the situation of friendly Indians, by a proclamation telling them to go to their designated reservations so that they would not be mistaken for hostile Indians. Through the summer of 1964, the interaction of the Indians with the white settlers had deteriorated to the point that it was difficult for anyone to tell who was friendly. Even within a certain tribe, some of the warriors would be hostile while their chiefs were attempting to negotiate a settlement.

On the other side, many of the white settlers were afraid of the new hostilities and wanted the Indians defeated in a manner which would not leave them in a position to interfere with continued white encroachment. They found a willing accomplice in the leader of the Colorado militia, Colonel John Chivington. Governor Evans had met with some of the Indian leaders prior to the massacre; however, he told them that he was powerless to negotiate a treaty. Since war had been declared, such power lay in the hands of the military. The was a military operation, and John Evans always maintained that even had he known what was planned

(he and his family were in Washington, D.C., at the time) he could not have stopped it.

The news of the massacre quickly spread throughout the country. Adding to the recriminations was the fact that several military officers had disagreed with Chivington and were vocal in their disapproval of all that had taken place on Sand Creek. A hurriedly called investigation rendered a verdict against Chivington's actions and, by implication, against Governor

Evans. Evans was never able to obtain a rehearing of the matter, and so in 1867 published his own "Reply" to his critics.

Whatever the truth of the Sand Creek incident, and it is still being debated, President

Johnson asked for and received Evans's resignation as governor on August 1, 1865. Evans then turned his efforts to getting Colorado admitted to the Union as a state. The state voted to seek admission, but the attempt was vetoed by President Johnson. The continued Indian wars were a factor in the president's decision as well as the bad publicity from Sand Creek. It has also been

4

suggested that the president tried to bribe Evans and Jerome Chaffee, Colorado's senators designate, to make a deal with him on civil rights issues in return for statehood. The end result was that Colorado was not admitted to the Union until 1876. Even with the disappointment of failure to achieve statehood, John Evans proceeded with his plans to build Colorado into a center of wealth and prosperity through railroad connections. When The Union Pacific Railroad chose to locate its lines north of Colorado, he was instrumental in connecting Denver with that line. He was also deeply involved in a plan to connect Denver to the Gulf of Mexico at Galveston and the West

Coast at San Francisco. The many projects in which he was involved, the complex financing arrangements, and the mergers and deals cut to connect Denver to the rest of the country are the stuff of entrepreneurial history.

An integral part of any community was its educational institutions, and John Evans as governor obtained a charter from the territorial legislature in March 1864 for Colorado Seminary, which became the . As with Northwestern, Evans donated four lots across from his home at Fourteenth and Arapahoe Streets in Denver to house the first buildings. The school had a rocky financial beginning, but in 1880 it was awarded tax-exempt status and buildings were added to the campus. In 1890 a new campus was begun for the university in southeast

Denver, again on land donated by Evans, and on that land the university survives.

By 1896 John Evans's health had failed, and in the last year of his life he was largely unaware of his surroundings. In November 1896 his wife was appointed guardian of his estate.

When Evans died July 3, 1897, he was honored as one of the prime builders of Denver and

Colorado. He was acknowledged as the founder of Evanston, Illinois, and Northwestern University.

A Masonic Lodge in Indiana also sent a formal tribute to the man they considered their founder.

Entrepreneur, railroad tycoon, real estate magnate, statesman, doctor, inventor, educator -- all these descriptions fit John Evans during his lifetime. He left his mark on every aspect of the world he inhabited, always a force for what he considered to be progress and improvement.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

John Evans had many interests and several careers in his lifetime. He was a medical doctor who wrote articles for medical journals and invented medical devices. At the same time he was a educator and founded two universities which still exist. He also found time to invest in real estate wherever he found himself, he was active in promoting the proliferation of railroads, and was even involved in the financing of many of his projects. Almost as an aside to his many professions, he managed to fit into his life a term as Governor of Colorado and Senator-elect of the prospective state.

With all of his activities and endeavors it would be unlikely that all his papers and related information would be gathered in one place. The Evans collection of the Colorado Historical

Society is a portion of the documentation of this remarkable life. It includes a microfilm of the collection housed at Northwestern University together with ledgers and stock books from his entrepreneurial adventures. The manuscript portion of the collection was first processed in the

1950s, but there have been additions to the collection as items were found by the Evans family and other associates of Governor Evans.

The current finding aid is the result of a reprocessing to consolidate subject matter and to incorporate the additional material. To aid the researcher, this aid has listed the current location of a document followed by its folder and item number from the earlier processing. A notebook contained in the collection gives the former itemization of the documents, and includes an abstract of some of the documents.

The first series in the collection is Biography. A great deal has been written about the life of John Evans, from single sheet notes to doctoral theses. This collection has numerous short biographies which were prepared to be delivered as speeches as well as several articles appearing in a variety of periodicals. The Biography section is followed by Correspondence. There is correspondence in many of the other series, so this section relates mainly to personal correspondence between John Evans and his family members and his early associates. It

7

contains a lengthy correspondence between John and Margaret Evans during the years she was in

Europe and he was in Colorado.

The next two series Family Correspondence and Family Documents contain documents and letters associated with the family. They include many items associated with events honoring

John Evans as the founder of Northwestern University and the University of Denver.

The next series, Medical, includes his writings on medical subjects, as well as items honoring Evans in his medical capacity. Masonic, which follows Medical section, contains information about Evans' masonic membership and honors he received in connection therewith.

The section for Northwestern covers a wide variety of items, from correspondence about the early days of the University to financial reports for years after Evans' death. The section also includes several additions to the collection relating to the centennial of the University, when John

Evans' son and grandson were honored guests at the celebrations.

The section on DU is similar to the Northwestern section and chronicles Evans' founding and generosity to the University of Denver. It includes copies of deeds from Evans to the

University which provided for the campus.

The next series is Governor, and contains documents related to Evans' tenure as governor of Colorado. Many of the documents in this series are copies, but have been so designated in the description. Continuing the Colorado connection, the Statehood series includes correspondence and documents relating to Evans' fight to have Colorado admitted to the Union.

A small section Evans Buildings relates to the Evans home and old Grace Methodist church, which Evans built. Another small section Patent contain the patent documents for the suspended bed for use on ships.

The section on the Railroad is an impressive collection of correspondence between Evans and such persons as the head of the Galveston, Texas Chamber of Commerce and Jay Gould. It also contains documents of incorporation for railroads in which Evans was interested and printed copies of speeches given by Evans in solicitation of support for his dream of Denver connected by rail with all parts of the United States.

8

After Railroad comes a section on Honors containing testimonials and even congratulatory correspondence on Evans' 80th birthday. Minerals and Mining contain items relating to the push for a silver standard, and Religious Connections, contains information about Evans' contributions and connections to the Methodist faith.

The category Death contains newspaper clippings and obituaries which describe the honor in which Evans was held at the time of his death. There is also a Miscellaneous category which contains items which defied easy categorization.

Outside the folios there are three bound volumes, two copies of what is identified as the

"Indian Affairs Pressbook" which contains copies of the correspondence of Evans as Indian

Commissioner, and "Newspaper Indexes," which identify other sources of information on Evans.

Finally, the collection contains photocopies of the collection of the Ohio Historical Society on the Evans family, which contains information on John Evans' family and background.

Other repositories of Evans material are the State Archives, the Denver Public Library

Western History Collection, Northwestern University, University of Denver Archives, and the Ohio

Historical Society.
