Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments.

  • Peter Gabriel 'Sledgehammer'
CLASSIC TRACKS RICHARD BUSKIN he words to Peter Gabriel’s most commercial song and biggest T international hit aren’t exactly subtle. Sonically drawing on some of his previous numbers, like ‘Games Without Frontiers’ and ‘Shock the Monkey’, as well as 1960s American soul records by the likes of Otis Redding, ‘Sledgehammer’ is chock full of sexual innuendo: a steam train, an aeroplane, a big dipper, a bumper car, you name it. Thesis submitted for the award of M.Phil. to the Dublin Institute of Technology College of Arts and Tourism Supervisor: Dr Mark Fitzgerald Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama February 2018 i ABSTRACT Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, arrangements of Irish airs were popularly performed in Victorian drawing rooms and concert venues in both London and Dublin, the most notable publications being Thomas Moore’s collections of Irish Melodies with harmonisations by John Stephenson. Performances of Irish ballads remained popular with English audiences but the publication of Stanford’s song collection An Irish Idyll in Six Miniatures in 1901 by Boosey and Hawkes in London marks a shift to a different type of Irish song.

  • PRRP 021 – Peter Gabriel Manchester 1980 – Liner Notes
Through The Wire With the release of his ground-breaking third solo album in May 1980, Peter Gabriel firmly began to establish his reputation as a highly innovative solo artist. In February of that year, before the release of the album, he embarked on a British tour, dubbed the „Tour Of China 1984‟, showcasing new material and a streamlined, more direct live sound. At The Apollo in Manchester, Gabriel and his band entered from the rear of the auditorium, arriving on stage to the menacing opening strains of “Intruder”. Alongside Tony Levin on bass and Larry Fast on keyboards was a surprising new recruit – guitarist John Ellis from punk outfit THE VIBRATORS. It was Ellis‟ raw, dry guitar, combined with Jerry Marotta‟s dominant, economical drumming, which gave Gabriel‟s new live sound much of its harder edge. This recording, from March 5th 1980, includes several rarely performed songs from Peter Gabriel‟s live repertoire at the time. “Milgram‟s 37”, given a lengthy explanatory introduction by Gabriel, wouldn‟t appear on an album until 1986‟s classic “So”, where it was renamed “We Do What We‟re Told”. The minimal “Lead A Normal Life” complements “Mother Of Violence” while “Bully For You” (co-written with Tom Robinson, who provided the lyrics for Gabriel‟s music) and the ebullient “I Go Swimming” both remain unreleased as studio recordings. “Games Without Frontiers” provided Gabriel with his second solo hit single (following the early success of “Solsbury Hill” in 1977) and it was during this song that he chose to leave the stage and venture into the audience to encourage a sing-along of the “Jeux Sans Frontières” chorus refrain.

  • David Rhodes

  • Gabriel at Hyde Park 23 June 2007
Warming Up a Rain Soaked Crowd – Peter Gabriel at Hyde Park 23 June 2007 Peter Gabriel brought the opening day of the 2 day Hyde Park Calling concert to a close with a 90 minute performance made up of largely forgotten gems plucked from the dusty recesses of a solo career which is now 30 years old. Of course those fans that faithfully devour every scrap of Gabriel data from the internet will know the story already but to recap for those people on the outside – Gabriel is currently in the early stages of a Warm Up tour arranged at fairly short notice as a result of agreeing to do the 25th anniversary at WOMAD next month in Wiltshire. To that end he has reassembled the same band (save for the absent keyboard player Rachel Z) that toured the major territories between 2002 to 2004 – what could reasonably described as the Growing Up band, but playing anything other than Growing Up songs. Gabriel enlisted the help of his devoted fans to suggest songs they’d like to hear live that were not aired last time and the result for tonight’s show is the return of songs that have lain dormant for anything up to 27 years! The keyboard slot has been filled – and I would add to great effect - by Angie Pollock, who also can add a touch of class to the backing vocals department when called upon. Angie has very quickly established herself among the otherwise familiar ranks of Gabriel’s supporting players, namely Tony Levin, David Rhodes, Ged Lynch, Richard Evans and Melanie Gabriel and the new renditions of these old songs are all healthily revitalised.
