METHODIST PIONEERS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC By Rev. Dr F. Baker The first chaplain appointed to New South Wales in 1786 was a Methodist in the secondary sense of being a devout evangelical clergyman, and was deliberately sponsored as such by William Wilberforce, friend and admirer of the Wesleys. The second who arrived under Wilberforce's auspices, Samuel Marsden (1765-1838),1 was similar in spirituality, but much tougher both in spirit and in body. His Methodism was even nearer to that of Wesley, for he had been born into a Yorkshire Wesleyan family. and apparently became one of their lay preachers.2 He was educated for the Anglican ministry at the expense of the Elland Clerical Society, an evangelical group founded in 1767 by Wesley's friend the Rev. Henry Venn, vicar of Huddersfield.3 By them he was sent to Hull Grammar School (aged 23!) and then on to Magdalene College. Cambridge, where he was befriended by Rev. Charles Simeon, after whom he named one of his children.4 The dire straits of the Chaplain in New South Wales, however, undoubtedly stressed by Governor Phillip in person as well as by Johnson himself in letters, made Wilberforce and his friends extremely anxious to secure another evangelical candidate as quickly as possible. Therefore they exerted pressure on Marsden, even to the extent of persuading him to leave Cambridge without graduating. His agreement was a measure of his Christian dedication, and also proof that they had indeed chosen the right man, eminently qualified by spiritual gifts, by robust strength, and by practical training. -

Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity. -

Hunt a� racted notoriety and confl ict as well as admira� on and respect: he was A V the subject of ar� cles in Punch and in the wider press concerning his clandes� ne dissec� on of a foetus in the crypt of a City church, while his Essay on Pantheism was proscribed by the Roman Catholic Church. He had many skirmishes with incumbents, both evangelical and catholic, and was dismissed from several of his curacies. ICTORIAN This book analyses his career in London and St Ives (Cambs.) through the lens of his autobiographical narra� ve, Clergymen Made Scarce (1867). David Yeandle has examined a li� le-known copy of the text that includes manuscript annota� ons by Eliza Hunt, the wife of the author, which off er unique insight into the many C anonymous and pseudonymous references in the text. Paoe•• DUCOI FIFTY YEARS OF STUDIES IN 1'\ ETHOD1ST HISTORY The Wesley Historical Society was established in 1893 and therefore celebrates its Jubilee this year. The early issues of the Proceedings were full of useful articles and studies for students of Methodist history. New letters of Wesley were constantly being found and corrections in the existing editions of Wesley's Journals and Letters were constantly being made. Indeed it can be safely said that we should never have had such admirable Standard Editions of both Letters and Journal but for the work of the Society. It was in the Proceedings that the suggestion was first made for the publication of these standard editions. These fifty years have seen notable achievements in the field of Methodist history. The most important of these have been the publication of the Standard Editions of Wesley's Journal (8 vols.) and Wesley's Letters. (8 vols.) and what has come to be regarded as the standard Life of John Wesley, that by Dr. J. S. Simon, in 5 vols. There is no man in English history of whose life the details are 80 fully known not only from year to year but for a great part of it from hour to hour as John Wesley; The Rev. W. B. Brash in the Didsbury College Centenary volume says "Apart from Birk beck Hill's editing of Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, it is the most carefully and fully edited book known to us in the field of English Literature." The Editor, Rev. Nehemiah Curnock, like so many other specialists in this period, was a Didsbury man. -

The name Wachau is part of Count Zinzendorf’s noble title and refers to an area in Austria where the Zinzendorfs’ ancestral estate was located. The Moravians founded several congregations in Wachovia: Bethabara, Bethania, Salem (now Winston‐Salem) as the central town, Friedberg, and Friedland. During the first decades of its existence the Elders Conference in Bethlehem (beginning 1762 the Oeconomatskonferenz) oversaw the activities in Wachovia and the leaders in Wachovia reported to Bethlehem. Therefore, many letters, reports, diaries, memoirs, and financial statements were sent to Bethlehem during the early decades. 2.3 Archival History Records relating to the congregations in Wachovia were made into a separate record group and arranged by Kenneth Hamilton. -

INDEX METHODISM METHODISM 1738 May 24, Wednesday (Old Style): John Wesley’s “New Birth” experience of the “grace” of spiritual consolation. From the very beginning of his Methodist movement the Reverend Wesley would be advocating plainness of dress and avoidance of jewelry. In his ADVICE TO THE PEOPLE CALLED METHODISTS, WITH REGARD TO DRESS, he wrote: “Wear no gold, no pearls, or precious stones.... I do not advise women to wear rings, earrings, necklaces.” Wesley went to great length to give Scriptural support for his position, quoting among other scriptures the injunction in 1 Peter 3:3, “Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and the wearing of fine clothing, but let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit.” ONE OF THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF THE HISTORIAN IS TO HELP US CONSTRAIN STORYTELLING. Press Kit The feature film Wesley is based closely on the actual events of Wesley's life, a story that already reads much like a Hollywood screenplay. Wesley is a compelling and controversial main character that women found intensely attractive; there is adventure on the high seas, a terrible storm and near-shipwreck. In the newly settled Savannah, Georgia, there is an incredibly romantic but star-crossed love affair that ends tragically. Wesley is crushed, and on his return to England we experience his spiritual struggle and finally renewal. We are then swept away with his preaching in the fields and his efforts to help the lowest classes of society. His ministry is controversial, there is mob violence, confrontation, and tension followed by his victorious preaching to thousands in his home town. In short, this true story has everything that Hollywood loves to put into movies! The movie has the seafaring adventure of Master & Commander , the bittersweet romance of Sense and Sensibility, but at the same time tells a compelling story of conversion, faith, dynamic social reform and ministry. Synopsis The year is 1732. John Wesley is an irritatingly religious, self-righteous instructor at Oxford who secretly struggles with his lack of true inner peace. He is offered the chance to go to the new colony of Georgia, where he hopes to earn his way to heaven by preaching to the Indians. During the voyage over, the ship encounters a violent storm; John and his brother Charles, terrified of dying, are astonished to see the group of Moravian missionaries on board calmly conducting their evening service as if the storm didn't exist. -

I have said for years that as United Methodists we have the most relevant theology for the 21st century in the areas of evangelism and discipleship. It is a theology worth knowing. o The concepts of grace, justification by faith, sanctification are all concepts of acceptance tempered with discipline and holy living. o It’s Scriptural: you preach and teach it. o It’s Social: you use it to promote outreach, mission, and social justice. o It’s Disciplined: you use it to guide people in counseling & Spiritual growth. 1 o It’s a Means of Revival: It was developed as a response to the apathy and doldrums of the church. o It’s Ecumenical: It pulls from Calvinism, Anglicanism, and the Moravians. The story of John Wesley in 18th century England is a story of a young boy who is greatly influenced by his mother and nurtured with a life-long call to ministry. The discipline of his upbringing led to an amazing sense of focus when he enrolled in Oxford in 1726. The development of the Holy Club began a courageous intersection between what he believed and how he practiced that belief. His failed venture as a missionary in Georgia revealed that just disciplining yourself with mechanical beliefs and intentional actions was not enough. The Moravians on the boat opened a door to what it meant to be saved by faith 2 and faith alone. Their influence continued to shape him as people like Peter Boehler constantly visited him and teased him with what it meant to be saved. -

Moravians in the City Offering Hope for 25 Years: Moravian Open Door 1987-2012 A history on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary by Rev. David A. Schattschneider, Ph.D. BLANK Moravians in the City Offering Hope for Twenty-five Years: Moravian Open Door Moravian Open Door (MOD) dedicated its newly renovated facilities at 347 East 18th Street in Manhattan (New York City) on November 7, 1987. Among the political leaders present was David Dinkins, the Manhattan Bor- ough President who would later serve as Mayor of New York City (1990–1993). Mario Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York (1983–1994), had sent a ci- tation commending the Moravian Church’s Eastern District for its commitment to provide “permanent housing for 42 elderly, homeless people” in the building “funded with a grant from the State Homeless Housing and Assistance Program and with contributions from member churches and individuals.”1 The citation clearly identifies the unique ‘church and state’ partnership which characterized the early stages of MOD’s activity. The citation also notes the long history of the Moravian Church in ministering to the neediest members of society: “By 1732, the Church already had begun serving New Yorkers, ministering to the needy, the unwanted and the forgotten.” 1 The framed citation may now be found hanging in the foyer of the MOD building. 1 First Moravian Church of New York City Moravian Open Door was a new program inspired by the Coffee Pot ministry of First Moravian Church in Manhattan. That congregation had its origins in the early years of the eighteenth century when European Moravians first arrived in America. -

Soon missions were established in every colony in the West Indies. Under Coke’s leadership, missions were also sent to Sierra Leone (1811) and Ceylon (1813). In 1804 the Methodist Conference set up a Standing Committee of Finance and Advice to manage its foreign relations and from 1813 onwards district auxiliaries were formed to support the work of the overseas missions. -
