SHADOWS PROFILE SHEET JANUARY 2021

The Shadows, and the written words documenting events and the people who lived and worked here are “the essence of history.” Join us in Telling the Full History.

Built for a wealthy sugar planter in 1834, the Shadows-on-the-Teche was originally part of a sugar cane plantation that enslaved over 200 men and women on the eve of the Civil War. Four generations lived at The Shadows before it became a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss cast shadows on the house, gardens, and Bayou Teche. Family letters and furnishings present an authentic picture of life in the 19th and 20th centuries. A selection of regional books and local art can be found in the museum shop.

Located in the heart of New Iberia’s Natonal Register Historic District & only 20 minutes away from Tabasco.
