Transcripts for website edited by members of Historical League, Inc. Original tapes are in the collection of the Arizona Heritage Center Archives, an Historical Society Museum, Tempe, Arizona. PS: Congratulations to you on being honored as Historymaker, Mrs. Eller. Please introduce yourself and give us your name, birth date, and where you were born. SE: Joanne Stephens Eller. PS: And the name that you are known by? SE: Stevie. (laughs) PS: Where did that name come from? SE: When I entered the University of Arizona as a freshman, I pledged a sorority and there were twenty-five girls in it. Five of them were named Joanne or Joan. There weren't any others named Stevie and I had been called that on and off growing up, in my little town. When I got married I used to tell people I was Joanne Eller and Karl acted like he didn't know who that was. So (laughs) I just gave up. It would have been nice to be Joanne but I don't really care anymore. PS: Are you comfortable with the name of Stevie? SE: Yes. Reading Costumbres – El Verdadero Espíritu de los Peruanos: A Semiotic Analysis of a Peruvian TV Program A thesis presented to the faculty of the Center for International Studies of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Hernán Medina Jiménez August 2010 © 2010 Hernán Medina Jiménez. All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled Reading Costumbres – El Verdadero Espíritu de los Peruanos: A Semiotic Analysis of a Peruvian TV Program by HERNÁN MEDINA JIMÉNEZ has been approved for the Center for International Studies by Karen E. Riggs Professor of Media Arts and Studies José A. Delgado Director, Latin American Studies Daniel Weiner Executive Director, Center for International Studies 3 ABSTRACT Medina Jiménez, Hernán., M.A., August 2010, Latin American Studies Reading Costumbres – El Verdadero Espíritu de los Peruanos: A Semiotic Analysis of a Peruvian TV Program (148 pp.) Director of Thesis: Karen E. Riggs This thesis analyzes the TV program Costumbres and the different meanings between the opening credits and the TV program’s content. To ensure that the analysis remains concrete, the episode chosen was Mi Santa Cruz, Pueblo de Amor—literally, “Saint Cross of Andamarca, my Home Town”—broadcast on Peruvian Public Broadcasting on 2007. Despite the fact that the opening credits repeat the same images of the TV program, the study argues that both products―the opening credits and the TV program―are essentially different because the former creates a different structure and a different concept throughout the editing process. In general, whereas each TV program addresses only one traditional festivity, the opening credits consist of a collection of excerpts from different TV episodes whose plot can be seen repeatedly by the audience every time the program is on the air.

  • Paul Simon (1986) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Marc Eliot (Guest Post)*
“Graceland”—Paul Simon (1986) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Marc Eliot (guest post)* Original album Original label Paul Simon “Paul Simon and ‘Graceland’” Paul Simon’s masterwork, 1986’s “Graceland,” was released in the summer of 1986 by Warner Bros, the label Simon had moved to in 1980 after an incredibly successful 16- year run at Columbia, where he had been since 1964. His great five-album run in the second half of the Sixties as the songwriter, co-singer, with Art Garfunkel, and guitarist for Simon and Garfunkel, played a major role in helping to bring folk music out of the limited confines of the coffeehouse circuit and into the wider world of rock and roll, following in the bootsteps of Bob Dylan’s 1965 groundbreaking single “Like A Rolling Stone.” Simon and Garfunkel’s string of hit albums and singles rode the wave of Sixties hippie sensibility with songs of young lovers who smoked pot and had a vague dissatisfaction with the social status quo, held together by the duo’s gorgeous two-part guitar-backed harmonies. Whereas Dylan opted for the grand arenas and stadiums only the biggest stars could fill, Simon and Garfunkel found their audiences on college campuses and their FM radio stations and used both to take them to the top of the charts. Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel, two neighborhood teenagers from Queens, began singing professionally in the ‘50s as Tom and Jerry, a handle tattooed on them by their first manager/producer who thought their real names sounded too Jewish for rock and roll.

First Name Last Name City State/Province Country Comments/Story: Barrie G. Calgary Alberta Canada It is often the small ideas that eventually have such a wonderful massive impact. I loved Todd's 'Little Free Library' innovation when he first started. He motivated me to make one and have since made many others and given to schools and organisations. He visited Calgary some years ago and kindly gave me a ball cap that I wear proudly regularly. So very sorry to hear of his passing. His influence to encourage reading and community interaction will be remembered and hopefully continued to all parts of the world. Germanno D. Sao Paolo SP Brazil Hi all, I can't explain exactly why, but knowing about his passing got me really sad, just like if he was from my family, even though I just knew about Todd's history and the Little Free Libraries a few dozen minutes ago. His legacy is inspiring, make us reflect about our lives and what we have been doing, and make me think we can always do better, we can always have a huge impact in the world with actions and things that may be laying around us without being noticed. God bless Todd's soul and his family & friends. Best regards from Brazil, Germanno Patricia H.
