THE TALLER ROSE After Claremont Show our American visitors did a whirlwind tour of local Daffodil growers. At Glenbrook we were delighted to be able to host the touring party for a Sunday supper - and lunch and a Daffodil walk on the Monday before they departed. It was an inspiration to us to meet such enthusiasts. In homely style we wined, dined and even sang. One great guy, with maybe a twinkle of a tear in his eye, said to us, "Ah never thought ah'd come haff -way round the world to sing - The Yeller Rose of Taxis". No, you never really know what growing Daffodils will lead to. Page 34 Page 55

Anne and Wanda raced off into the rainy blue yonder to subject matter and having the right climate. However we all need help stage some exciting Glenbrook novelty exhibits. Fortune was with the from time to time. Some excellent books on Bulbs and Bulb Growing are as gals this year and home they came, eventually, with 7 Champion Cards, the follows: Oldham Trophy for Doubles and extra awards for Champion Seedling, Reserve The Smaller Bulbs by Brian Mathew (Batsford) Champion and Grand Champion in Show and plenty to giggle about. The Bulb Book by Rix and Phillips (Pan) Apparently another exhibitor didn't care for a bloom of the astonishing The World of Iridaceae by Clive Innes (Holly Gate) American Split-Cup Daffodil "PINK HOLLY" that Wanda was benching. He Growing Bulbs by Martin Rix (Timber Press) really would have done better not to tell her so. Wanda immediately Modern Miniature Daffodils by James Wells (Timber Press) proceeded to instruct another bystander on why it was one of the best Narcissus (A Guide to Wild Daffodils) by John Blanchard (A.G.S.) blooms in the Show. The bystander was, of course, the Head Judge but it Bulbs (2 Volume Set) by John Bryan (Christopher Helm) served him right to "cop it" as he had no business to be standing there Spring and Winter Flowering Bulbs of the Cape by Barbara Jeppe (OUP) watching exhibitors bench entries. You will have realised by now that my sister Wanda was a Shrinking Violet PAM AND RHONDA AND BETTY AND DOROTHY - in a previous life. As this Catalogue departs to the Printers Rod has just finished having "a cuppa" with Pam and Rhonda and Betty and Dorothy. As a very small Whitemore Show is always a beaut little picnic event to close the Show cottage-business we always try to look after all our 'customers'. We do season here. Four more Champions and Reserve Champion in Show were our best to supply good, healthy bulbs and we try to match that up with •awarded to Glenbrook exhibits. And the cakes were fabulous! friendly hospitality. Although we are basically a mail-order supplier PRONOUNCEMNTS AND PRONUNCIATIONS there is hardly ever an hour that goes by without some "callers". Our Despite the raging fashion we didn't really meet anyone that we thought bulb garden display is open every day from late July till the first week much like Jane Austen all Spring. Nevermind, because we did instead meet in October. Calling unexpectedly at other times is a risky business. Rod one of the truly great men of the English Daffodil scene. Mr. Geoff may actually ask you "What are you expecting to see?" Rude - maybe? Temple-Smith brought to visit us Mr. John Blanchard - pre-eminent friendly - maybe? or maybe busy. Oh, oh here comes another car up authority on Narcissus species and expert on all Daffodil matters. John the drive. seemed pleased to see our clumps of N. cyclamineus, N. nevadensis, N. triandrus etc. flourishing - and producing promising numbers of seed Still, we always remember that it is your support that keeps our business capsules. He was also interested in some truly Miniature Doubles we've going. bred using pollen from RIP VAN WINKLE. Not wanting to miss the chance I Thanks everyone! absolutely had to ask John for the correct pronunciation of Narcissus romieuxii. John's answer was ROMMY-OOKSY-I. (I think I listened carefully!)
